While HackMD does best in real-time collaboration, some contributions happen asynchronously. Sometimes you want to discuss about the note content without changing it and sometimes you don't think the discussion is relevant for the community to know. Comments are best for these use cases. ## Write comment Select and hit the **<i class="fa fa-commenting"></i> Comment** button that pops up. The comments are toggled off by default. Click the **<i class="fa fa-commenting"></i> comment(s)** button at the top right corner to show all comment threads. ![view all comment thread](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/r12ypOKDA.gif)**▲ View comment thread** Alternatively, you can click on the commented text or the <i class="fa fa-commenting-o"></i> icon at the end of the line to view the comment. Click anywhere else to toggle it off. Text with multiple overlapping comments will have darker shades of color, different comment threads will be stacked at the end of the line. ## Pin right panel(comment panel) We understand that sometimes in Split-view, viewing messages can obstruct the preview on the right side. Therefore, you can click the <i class="fa fa-thumb-tack" aria-hidden="true"></i> pin button next to the <i class="fa fa-times" aria-hidden="true"></i> to adjust the right message panel, so that the preview area and the message panel do not overlap. ![Adjust comment panel](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/SkKxR4gw0.gif) ## Comment permission The comment feature can be disabled entirely for a note in the <i class="fa fa-share-alt fa-18"></i> **Sharing** menu. All comment threads will be invisible and no new comment can be added. Manage the comment permission in the <i class="fa fa-share-alt fa-18"></i> **Sharing** menu. # Create note from comment ## How to convert a comment to a new note 1. Click the "Convert to new note icon." 2. The editing and reading permissions for new notes will be the same as the defaults for your personal workspace or team workspace. HackMD recognizes the link source within hackmd.io and presents the preview as a card.
