# Use comments to collaborate asynchronously

You can contribute to the note using Comments <i class="fa fa-commenting-o"></i>.

While HackMD does best in real-time collaboration, some contributions happen asynchronously. Sometimes you want to discuss about the note content without changing it and sometimes you don't think the discussion is relevant for the community to know. Comments are best for these use cases.

## Write comment
Select and hit the **<i class="fa fa-commenting"></i> Comment** button that pops up. Leave the comment on the right-hand side comment area and hit <kbd>Enter</kbd> or <kbd>Return</kbd>.

Edit or delete your own comments from the <i class="fa fa-fw fa-ellipsis-v"></i> menu at the top right corner of the comment.

## View comment
Comments are attached to the text commented and the text background is highlighted. The comments are toggled off by default. Click the **<i class="fa fa-commenting"></i> comment(s)** button at the top right corner to show all comment threads.

Alternatively, you can click on the commented text or the <i class="fa fa-commenting-o"></i> icon at the end of the line to view the comment. Click anywhere else to toggle it off.

Text with multiple overlapping comments will have darker shades of color, different comment threads will be stacked at the end of the line.

## Pin right panel(comment panel)

We understand that sometimes in Split-view, viewing messages can obstruct the preview on the right side. Therefore, you can click the <i class="fa fa-thumb-tack" aria-hidden="true"></i> pin button next to the <i class="fa fa-times" aria-hidden="true"></i> to adjust the right message panel, so that the preview area and the message panel do not overlap.


## Comment permission
The comment feature can be disabled entirely for a note in the <i class="fa fa-share-alt fa-18"></i> **Sharing** menu. All comment threads will be invisible and no new comment can be added. Enabling commenting again to bring back all the comment threads.


A note admin can decide what roles are needed for a user to leave a comment. Manage the comment permission in the <i class="fa fa-share-alt fa-18"></i> **Sharing** menu.

# Create note from comment

## How to convert a comment to a new note
1. Click the "Convert to new note icon."
2. In the ··· menu, you can click [Convert to My Note/Convert to Team Note] to convert the corresponding comment to a new note.


When a new note is created, there will be a link to the corresponding note underneath the original comment; you can convert the same comment into multiple independent notes.

## Default content in the new note

When you create a note from a comment, we'll automatically fill in the title and text for you, including the content of the comment, the person who left the comment, and the information and time of the original note.

The editing and reading permissions for new notes will be the same as the defaults for your personal workspace or team workspace. If they are all free plan spaces, the editing and reading defaults to "only me."


## What happens when I paste a HackMD note link in a comment?

HackMD recognizes the link source within hackmd.io and presents the preview as a card.

If you have note editing permission, you can remove the preview card from the comment.
