Summary of the StV-Evaluation | 2024
===
From 22.01. to 18.02. we collected your feedback on our work as ÖH Student Union (StV) for Informatik.
These are the detailed results for each question and what we plan to do as a consequence.
[TOC]
*Scale questions* could be answered using a scale from **1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly agree)**. The average and median are given to account for outliers.
### I am generally happy with the work of the StV.
AVG: 6.0, MED: 6
Agreement with this statement is higher than it has ever been. We are very happy with this result!
## Atmosphere
### I feel like the StV provides a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all students.
AVG: 6.2, MED: 7
This topic is really important to us, which is why we have added several initiatives in this area throughout the last year, such as our Awareness Teams and Confidential Contacts - see an introduction [below](#Confidential-Contacts).
We are happy to hear that results have further improved and you feel that welcome with us!
If you ever have a negative experience at one of our events or with one our members, please don't hesitate to let us know - we'll do our best to resolve the situation.
### I feel like I can always ask a member of the StV when I have a study-related question.
AVG: 6.1, MED: 7
We have been rolling out our FAQs last year and have reworked some of our other services - they should help answer questions before they even get to us. Still, most of our guidance work happens in person - it is great that you consider us approachable!
### I feel like the StV is competent when it comes to answering questions.
AVG: 6.0, MED: 7
It's good to hear that we can answer most of your questions competently! In the next months, our members will undergo several trainings to increase our expertise even further, such as the TNF Seminar in March, a seminar by the Federal Representation in April and KIF 52.0 in May.
We are also currently trying to increase knowledge among other Student Unions of the ÖH JKU and its departments.

We'll quickly go over each service and touch on your ideas for improvement:
#### Discord-Server
*The StV provides and moderates a Discord server for all of its students to give you a place to talk to each other and ask questions to members of the student union. You can also find exams and memes here: https://discord.gg/wAek576*
It is pretty apparent that our Discord server is the by far most essential service we offer and is generally very well known and liked. Numbers are a bit skewed though, given that the survey was unfortunately only published on Discord: See our [Methodology](#Methodology) for more.
We specifically asked you for improvement suggestions of our server, and you had a few:
- **Channel Selection:** At the beginning of the year, we switched to a Community Server to make Onboarding of new members easier. While you seem happy with the change overall, there are a few ideas we will test out:
- Make help channels such as our FAQs always visible.
- Move the semester channel customization question to the pre-join questions.
- Remove unused forums.
- **Update channel names:** Since our course-related channels were created, some courses have been renamed. If you spot an outdated channel name, please let us know!
#### Leitfaden (Study Guide)
*Our Study Guide (or "Leitfaden") is an information brochure that should help you with your study start. It is specifically designed for first semester Bachelor students. Find out more [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/resources).*
Our Study Guide is pretty well-known, especially among first semester students. This isn't too surprising (it's hard to avoid getting one within your first week at uni), but it's good to know that you don't seem to have any issues with it.
As you can see via the link above, while we don't have a similar brochure explicitly target to Master's students (because the study is a lot less structured), we believe that quite a bit of material exists for them as well.
#### Informatik-Café (Study Café)
*Every week, we organize a "Sprechstunden-Café": Grab free coffee and some cake and rant about any problems in your study, exchange ideas, get to know people, and receive advice from veterans of your study. Find our more [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik#c827).*
It's good to see that the relentless advertisement of our Study Café has paid of - all participants have heard of our Office Hours. A surprisingly high amount of you seems to have never visited them however - we'll try to think of ways to make them more attractive (free ice cream?). We were pretty happy with participation last semester however, especially among newer students.
#### Informatik-Mentoring
*For all first-year students, we offer Mentorings in the winter semester to provide support for your study start: In regular meetings, a member of ÖH helps you with your study start. They are a mandatory part of the Informatik curriculum ("Propädeutikum"). You can find more information about the Informatik-Mentoring [here](http://informatik.jku.at/teaching/prospective/de/mentoring.html).*
Following last year's feedback, we have restructured our Mentoring for this year. Instead of having all meetings in the first weeks of your studies, tutors were instructed to draw out meetings further into the semester to adequately address any issues that might come up later in the semester.
Unfortunately, communication among professors was a bit unclear this year, which resulted in uneven requirements for attendance and participation. We'll try to rectify this issue on our end by communicating these aspects with our students upfront.
#### StV-Dashboard
*In an effort to make our work more transparent, the StV uses a public project Dashboard. You can see all of our project groups there and learn who does what in the student union. Find out more [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/transparency#c1337).*
While the amount of people aware of our Dashboard has significantly increased since last time, there are still many who have not heard of this service. With our new website, we will now be able to feature it more prominently and can finally use our shiny new short link: https://new.oeh.jku.at/cs/dashboard
We'll continue to mention its existence as often as possible.
#### Bachelor Info-Abend
*Finishing your Bachelor's and getting all the formalities of the Thesis project right can be hard. To help you out, we are offering an info event once a year. At the "Informatik Bachelor Info-Abend" institutes also get the opportunity to present some possible Thesis topics you can write with them. You can find more information on the event [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/events#c1427).*
Since our Bachelor Info Event happened during the StV Evaluation period, feedback in early responses was limited. We were quite happy with the turnout at the event however, and did not receive any complaints. You can find the recordings and slides [here](https://informatik.jku.at/students/bachelorinfoabend2024/) if you missed it.
#### Confidential Contacts
*If you want to discuss a more sensible topic privately, or if you encounter problems with a member of the StV, you might not want to contact the whole Student Union. This is why we have introduced Confidential Contacts last year: They will treat your issues in a confidential manner and can then bring them up anonymously with the right people. Find out more [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/team#c1334).*
While still sadly not known to all of our students, the popularity of this service has massively increased. We feel like the actions we took last year to boost their visibility following the evaluation were quite successful - with our new website, we now also have a prominent place to advertise them in more detail (see link above).
We want to ensure that everyone knows how our Confidential Contacts operate, so we are now also publishing our previously internal [Code of Conduct](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hyT25MM7GLcBs--MrbseJ7JYatKcT5Gk5yE3Sddpmho).
Following the last StV Evaluation, throughout the last year, we have also introduced **Awareness-Teams** to all of our bigger events - similarly to Confidential Contacts, they should ensure that everyone feels welcome and that problems are quickly resolved. They have also been adapted for most uni-wide events of the ÖH, such as the Mensafeste. See [our website](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/events#c1420) for more.
#### jkuroomsearch.app
*An alumnus of the Student Union has created a service that crawls KUSSS to provide you with a list of unbooked rooms, the ÖH TNF is paying for the domain. While the service is of course not able to know of any external bookings (that are not in the normal KUSSS system), it can still help you to find a free study room more easily. Check it out here: [jkuroomsearch.app](https://jkuroomsearch.app)*
This service is probably not the most integral to our work, but we thought we should mention it. We advertised it a bit during exam season and will now also add it to our FAQs and Study Guides to increase its visibility.
#### #job-offers on Discord
*The Student Union is frequently contacted by companies about open positions. Our team checks the offers for compliance with the minimum salary according to the collective agreement. We then forward them to you by posting them on [Discord](https://discord.gg/wAek576) in the `#job-offers` channel.*
We are positively surprised to see that so many seem to actively use this offer. Since there were no real requests for change, we'll keep at it.
#### StV-Event-Calendar
*Our bigger events can be found in our event calendar. Add it to your calendars to never miss an event again - you can find it [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/events#c1403)!*
Given that our events are very actively advertised on Discord now, our calendar has lost a bit in popularity. It is still used enough to warrant the extra effort of syncing the two, but we most likely won't port it to the new calendar feature of our website and stick with a shared Google Calendar for the time being.
#### SBT / ESB
*The Studienberatungstage (formerly Erstsemestrigenberatung) are an event in the holidays before the semester start. It is organized by the ÖH JKU, we participate for our study.*
This semester's date was not ideal (because it was *after* the registration period had opened). We'll try to get ÖH JKU to change this for next semester - other than that, the event went quite smoothly.
#### Our FAQs
*Some questions come up quite often - as suggested in a previous ÖH evaluation, we now maintain an extensive FAQ. You can find it [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/resources#c1342).*
Our FAQs are the biggest new service we have started following last year's evaluation: With more than 40 pages of Q&A, upkeep is quite demanding. We are happy to see that it is being used quite actively though! Many of our fellow student unions have also adapted our questions to their own FAQs, and we are currently working on a JKU-wide version.
Following your feedback, we have now restructured them a bit to keep them clear despite their massive size.
A surprising amount of Discord users still don't know of the conveniently placed `#faqs` channel. As discussed above, we'll look into making it more visible. We have also prominently placed our FAQs on our website now.

We'll quickly go over each event and touch on your ideas for improvement:
#### Informatik-Stammtisch
*Every month, we organize a Regulars' Table in a bar at the uni for all CS students. You are invited to come and talk to your colleagues in a chill atmosphere, we pay for your drink. Once a semester, your teachers are invited as well. Find out more [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/events#c1421).*
Following last year's feedback, all of our Regular's Tables announcements now explicitly mention that uni bars come with a wide arrange of non-alcoholic drinks: The focus is not on drinking but on spending time with colleagues in a casual atmosphere.
We have also moved back to the KHG bar in the last semester to reduce noise.
While the event is very well-known, participant numbers are not high. We think of revising them to make every event something special: Be it Karaoke night or an interesting talk.
We have also decided in favor of a change of dates - we have traditionally always had our Regulars' Table on Monday nights, but this clashes with uni lectures for many first semester students. We are now moving to Wednesday instead.
#### StV-Barbeque
*Every summer semester, we grill for all of our students and lecturers at the StV BBQ: Enjoy free food and drinks, prepared with a lot of love! Find out more [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/events#c1423).*
Unsurprisingly, the event is not very well-known to our first semester students who have never participated in it.
Last year's BBQ was unfortunately quite rainy and windy, to an extend where even our rain covers were not sufficient. We can fully understand that these weather conditions did not pair up well with our sometimes pretty long queues. We have passed your feedback on and will think of a new queuing system for next time (maybe one that that doesn't rely on chalk markers) - there is very little we can do about the weather however.
As with every of our events, we offered vegetarian and vegan food options as well as our organic, regionally-sourced meat. Due to the high numbers of non-pork eaters (especially among AI students), we are currently considering alternative meat options (that will not give you food poisoning if they aren't grilled just right).
#### Einstandsfest (Welcome Party)
*Every winter semester, we invite you and your lecturers to our Einstandsfest, a little Welcome Party at the beginning of the semester with free food and drinks. Find out more [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/events#c1423).*
Quite a lot of people were at the event. This was our first big event at the newly renovated event hall: It allowed us to fully switch to a renewable cup system and we could provide you with a more accessible bar area. You seem to have enjoyed it, we haven't receive any complaints.
The Language Corners we initially proposed at last year's evaluation were not too well-received and saw barely any use - we will probably not continue this idea in the next year.
#### Hacktoberfest
*Open source software is the foundation on which the digital world is built. In October, we celebrate open software and show you how you can become active in the community yourself at our Hacktoberfest.*
This event was an attempt to try something a bit more programming focused, and its organization was quite spontaneous. Turnout was very low (probably in parts because in the week of the event, so many other things were happening as well) as can also be clearly seen in the survey results.
While we enjoy the spirit of the event, it is probably not worth organizing again, unless we once more find a partner willing to share the effort involved.
#### Discord Meme-Awards
*Probably one of our more random events, our Discord Meme Awards have now somehow become a regular thing. In it, we honor the best Meme creators on our Discord, determined by an Oscar-worthy voting process - see last year's [announcement video](https://youtu.be/4FQXpG2Hc1w).*
Given that this event is not taking itself too seriously and embraces "cringe" in all of its forms, it is sometimes hard to judge how you actually feel about it. Quite fine, it seems. We don't know how to feel about that.
#### JKU GAMES
*Together with the ÖH TNF, we organize a massive gaming event for all members of the JKU each semester: Be it board games, PC, VR, or Pen and Paper, we've got you covered. You can find out more [here](https://games.oeh.jku.at).*
Very apparently, this event needs no introduction - not only a favorite among us student union members to organize, but clearly also very popular with you, we had two editions of the JKU Games last year. We have massively increased in size and participant count, and have added on new partners and program points.
Get ready for the next JKU Games on **17.05-19.05**!
You'll find a link to our Games Discord server at the website above. As usual, we'll post a survey about what tournaments we should offer in the future, so check it out!
#### ÖH Eval-Day
*The ÖH Eval-Day is our way to increase turn-out for the course feedback questionnaires. By handing out free snacks and drinks, we want to incentivise you to help improve your courses.*
Initially a project of the StV Informatik, the Eval-Day has grown to a uni-wide event: Last semester, we cooperated with all other faculties and even had a visit from the Vice Rector for Teaching. Because of that, this event was pretty well-advertised and known to most participants.
We received some feedback about the date of last semester's edition: Because the event was quite early in the evaluation phase, some courses could not be properly evaluated yet because their exams were after the event. While we do understand this issue, it is always somewhat of a balance act: If the event is too late in the semester (or during exams), not many people show up. As you can probably imagine, with that many planning teams involved, finding a date is not easy at is already.
Still, we'll keep your feedback in mind for next semester.
#### ÖH TNF Sommergrillerei
*Similar to the StV BBQ, we also organize a massive grill event with the ÖH TNF every summer - specialities such as our liquid-nitrogen ice cream included. Find out more [here](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften#c1370).*
Despite the fact that first-semesters have never participated in it, the event is pretty well-known. This is not too surprising, given that is one of the biggest events on campus and has been a beloved tradition for many years.
Similarly to the StV BBQ, we are rethinking our meat options. Other than that, you seem to be quite happy with it - same goes for us, last year went pretty smoothly.
#### ÖH TNF Punschstand
*Every winter semester, the ÖH TNF offers hot Punsch to help you get through the cold weather and the even harsher exams.*
This year, we combined the Punschstand with our Stammtisch and had quite some fun there - you had no negative feedback, there is not much we aim to change either.
#### ÖH TNF Park Café
*Once every semester, the Study Café is converted to the Park Café: We leave our office in favor of the Science Park and serve you coffee, tea, cake and cookies, together with some tips and tricks on how to organize your study!*
This event is probably one of our easiest one effort-wise, but it is nice to see that you don't seem to mind. Given that it is aimed mainly at passer-bys we usually don't reach with conventional methods, we don't advertise it too much. Turnout was quite alright still, thanks for coming.
#### Picture A Scientist
*Last semester, we had a movie night and podium discussion on woman and minorities in (Computer) Science. The event was co-organized with the Arbeitskreis für Gleichbehandlungsfragen and the ÖH TNF.*
We really enjoyed both the movie and the talk, and could take away quite a few things - there were even some discussion points for our Study Commission afterwards.
While many employees of the JKU showed up and we were generally happy with the amount of participants, not many students came despite our usual advertisement.
#### ESC Watchparty
*Together with the GayNF, a queer group within the ÖH TNF, we organized a watch party of the ESC in HS1.*
We had a lot of fun and many participants asked us to repeat it - from the questionnaire, it seems like not many of you took part however.
If resources permit, we'll do it again, but it does not seem to be a priority for you.
### Excluded Services and Events
Naturally, the events and services listed are not all we do. For example, one of our biggest events last semester was not included: The Konferenz für Informatikfachschaften ([KIF](https://wiki.kif.rocks/wiki/KIF515:Hauptseite)). We invited Student Unions from all over Germany and Austria for an exchange of ideas about our work and then published a report for the Federal Ministry of Education with demands for your study. Since normal students could not take part, we didn't include the event in our questionnaire.
We also publicly commented on laws affecting our study, such as the [founding law of the new university](https://www.parlament.gv.at/gegenstand/XXVII/SNME/251720/) opening up next door - this isn't a traditional service and didn't really fit the category so we left it out. You can read more about these two topics on our [website](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/transparency/projects).
For a list of all our projects last year, check out our [Dashboard](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zDA9RtYCeS_W9kqg-fvT_ZM88MHDR_vEhD6qcAP12aM/edit#gid=0).
### What are your thoughts about the External Events we promote?
We are frequently contacted by companies and other organizations about advertising their events. If they seem relevant to our students, we will usually post them on Discord.
Not many of you had strong opinions on the topic, so we'll keep things as they are.
### What kinds of events are you interested in?
In our talks with other Student Unions, we noticed that our events are often not directly about Computer Science but focus on providing opportunities to get to know each other instead.
We have therefore tried out some more CS-related events last semester, such as the Hacktoberfest, a Coding Contest and the Podium Discussion of Picture A Scientist. Since success was mixed, we asked you for your opinion - multiple answers could be picked:

The results are quite interesting: While you clearly are interested in Networking Events (such as our BBQs or the Einstandsfeste), the most popular answer was **Excursions to IT companies**. We are already in talks with partners about that, but we are happy for suggestions - we'll poll you about this topic soon via our Discord server.
You are also really interested in more **Gaming Events** (basically smaller versions of the JKU Games) - that seems like something we can make happen on a regular basis. Naturally, they will be a lot less sophisticated though - we'll keep you posted!
**Company Talks** and **Pubquizzes** should work well in combination with a Stammtisch, we'll work out something for you there, too.
A **Movie Night** seems like a pretty straight-forward event as well, we'll look into it.
Conversely, **Watch Parties of CS conferences** don't seem to be a high priority - we have gotten in touch with our CS institutes and will update you if anything comes up on their end.
**Podium Discussions** do not seem to be worth the hassle by the looks of it - unless something comes up, we'll not pursue this idea further.
### Are there any additional services or events you want us to organize?
You had a few ideas:
- A **Hacking 101 course** about exploits and data manipulation: Good news, we have a whole Master's major on Security with plenty of courses centered around the topic. If you fancy some more practical experience, check out the JKU's CTF club [SIGFLAG](https://sigflag.at/) - a few current and former Student Union members are active there, and we invited you to one of their events last year!
- Clubs for **extracurricular activities**: In 2022, the ÖH JKU has launched its club initiative. If you are interested in starting a club, the ÖH will support you with PR, rooms and other resources. Check out the initiative [here](https://oeh.jku.at/studentische-initiativen-und-klubs) - a few clubs are already going strong.
- **Coding Contests**, **Programming events** and **Hackathons**: We actually organized a Coding Contest with Cloudflight at JKU last semester and plan on continuing this cooperation. Given that our last Programming event, the Hacktoberfest, was not too popular, we are not sure if demand is there. We know that some JKU-related clubs are planning Hackathons in the next year - see our [recent post](https://discord.com/channels/370458917073059841/501276531545604108/1213175429045948539) in `#current-events`.
- Like every year, one very determined person asked for a **soccer tournament**. Like every year, we have to unfortunately deny the request - none of us is really into soccer, and it is very much out of scope for our work. Hit up the [Sportreferat](https://oeh.jku.at/abschnitte/sportreferat), the uni-wide ÖH department tasked with organizing sports events, this should be right up their alley.
- **Social Events without alcohol**: Throughout the last few years, we have seen a steady decrease in alcohol consumption at our events and have naturally adjusted accordingly. Most of our events are pretty enjoyable for non-drinkers we hope - there are quite a lot we don't provide alcohol to begin with, and very few events end with any drunk guests. Most of the new event ideas mentioned above should also fulfill this criteria.
- **Welcome Events for Internationals:** The International Welcome Center is a JKU office that does pretty much that. Check out their events [here](https://www.jku.at/en/international-welcome-center-and-student-ombuds-office/international-welcome-center-events/).
### How do you usually become aware of our events / services?

Unfortunately, results for this question are of limited meaningfulness due to the way the survey was distributed, see [Methodology](#Methodology).
Still, it is interesting to see that a big number of students actually reads our **Instagram Account ([@oehtnf](https://www.instagram.com/oehtnf/))** - we don't use it as actively as most other Student Unions, but should probably rethink that approach.
Unsurprisingly, **E-Mail** is still a very relevant way for you to get informed - we will continue to use it for our biggest event. For most of this semester, sending emails was unfortunately not possible due to a fault at the JKU's mailing infrastructure - now that this issue is fixed, we hope to increase communication again.
Our preferred channel to keep you updated will remain our **Discord server**, however: With email, we are unfortunately dependent on the ÖH JKU's mail office, which is often unreliable (as can be seen by the fact that this survey was not sent out to you for several weeks).
Given that quite a few of you do not know our **StV Calendar** according to a [previous question](#StV-Event-Calendar), we are not surprised about our numbers here.
As you can also see, **word of mouth** still goes a long way as well, so make sure to invite your colleagues to our events and tell them about our services!
## Conclusion
Overall, you seem to be happy with the job we are doing - that's great to hear, we hope to keep it up!
Thank you all for your participation, for all of your feedback and for all the kind words - we want to especially thank you for all the great ideas you have given us!
We have some really awesome things planned for this year and are looking forward to sharing them with you! We hope some of the things mentioned here have excited you as well!
If any of the new ideas sound like they would perfectly match your skill set, we are happy to [welcome you to the team](https://new.oeh.jku.at/en/study/technik-und-naturwissenschaften/informatik/team/join) and give you the resources to make them happen - after all, that is how most of our events and services have gotten to be.
We'll poll you again next year, but we also appreciate your continuous feedback throughout the semester!
If there are still things unclear about this StV Evaluation, please let us know (either via informatik@oeh.jku.at or via Discord)!
See you in the new semester!

## Methodology
- Responses to some questions were moved and handled at a more appropriate position.
- The questionnaire was sent out as Google Forms via Discord. Unfortunately, the Mail Department of the uni-wide representation (ÖH JKU) failed to follow our requests to send out the survey via email. While out of our control, this severely limited the amount of students reached and introduced some limits to its meaningfulness.
- Last year's survey can be found [here](https://hackmd.io/@byte-kraken/Bkjdosr6s). Note that last year's survey was combined for CS and AI students, while this year separate surveys were send out - comparability is a bit limited because of that. You can find the results for AI [here](https://hackmd.io/r1XbGHr_TReIbZjngsegwg).
