Read below for the Application Process, or [**click here**](https://m.me/tejenp) to reach out via FB Messenger to learn more. ::: *We are currently looking for 15 students to help design and lead Facebook University, an immersive diversity program offered by Facebook (the program will be held online again this year). The program involves introducing freshman Facebook interns to key topics in mobile app development, and supporting their project work, while cultivating a positive and energetic spirit among the cohort. The instruction spans a total of 7 weeks from June 21st - August 6th. For you, the first 3 weeks is a full-time contract with prior training and preparation time required. The following 4 weeks are additional weeks of part-time instruction and support, contingent on your performance and contibution during the first 3 weeks. Together, our job is to make sure that this summer is a captivating, engaging and memorable experience for the interns.* **We are seeking to fill 15 positions this year...** * 10 students to help lead Facebook's Android (Java) internship program * 5 students to help lead Facebook's iOS (Objective-C) internship program --- ### 💡 Overview This is [CodePath](https://x.tejen.net/qrs)'s sixth year running the [Facebook University](https://x.tejen.net/dg7) summer internship program, where Facebook selects 180 freshman and sophomore university students from across the US to teach mobile app development to. Over the summer, these carefully-selected students are Facebook interns working on-campus with us at Facebook HQ in Menlo Part or Seattle, where they run through a 7-week immersive iOS or Android full-time program. This bootcamp program is designed and executed by our team at Facebook. The program is focused on diversity in STEM with the selected students being largely from Ivy League colleges but with backgrounds that are under-represented in the engineering industry. The program goal is to teach them practical mobile skills, inspire them to become software engineers, and empower them to become qualified to come back to FB for another internship the next summer. We need your help to make the program a high-energy, spirited, and frictionless experience for the interns. This would be a paid mentoring and program management opportunity. You will work alongside other Intern Leads in your team to assist a professional iOS/Android engineer (the "instructor") in supporting the interns as they work together through the collaborative project-based curriculum online, building apps for the first time. The right candidate for this position would be someone who can develop a strong aptitude for debugging basic iOS (Xcode, Swift/Objective-C) or Android (Android Studio, Java) mobile applications. This position also demands comfortability with public speaking, a love for mentoring others in tech, and a knack for holding the attention of hundreds of interns on a Zoom call. The three key qualities that we've found make a successful Intern Lead are... * 🔥 **Energy/Attitude** - Do you bring an enthusiastic & inviting vibe, or have endless ideas for entertainment or ad-hoc activities to foster a high-spirited and memorable WFH atmosphere for our interns * 🕵 **Debugging Ability** - How quickly can you spot issues in code and help interns get unstuck on projects as they work through our 3-week online app-development bootcamp curriculum * 💁‍♀️ **Communication** - How clearly can you explain a concept, and help someone understand what’s going wrong in code. And, outside of code, how proactively can you identify conflicts between interns or weaknesses in the program, ["manage up"](https://x.tejen.net/yn3), and work with the team to respond proactively to situations. The 7-week project-based curriculum is developed by [CodePath](https://x.tejen.net/34r) and Facebook, and is largely the same from year to year. The students will be assigned one app to build each week for their first 3 weeks, following video tutorials to build each app. This will prepare them for the remainder 4 weeks of their program: working on solo projects, where each intern will build an iOS/Android app of their own design. The top app projects meet and present their app to Mark Zuckerberg at the end of the summer. Last summer, it was an amazing and fun experience working with the students. They had an incredible amount of energy, and it was incredibly rewarding to be a memorable part of their summer experience and their journey into tech. In addition to the 3 full-time weeks of instruction online from June 21st - July 9th during the summer, you will also need to commit to 3 weeks of prior training, which will happen through Zoom calls with your fellow Intern Leads from May 31st to June 21st. During these 3 training weeks, you will spend 10-15 hours per week working closely with your fellow Intern Leads to work through the same bootcamp curriculum that we will be administering to the FBU interns beginning June 21st. In addition, you will spend these few preparation weeks ideating and planning the day to day activities/events/competitions/etc that your team will go to on execute with the interns later. Your manager will supervise these training weeks to provide resources that you may need for activities, and to help all Intern Leads gain the technical knowledge and skills you'll need to have a successful and awesome experience leading Facebook interns over the summer for 3 weeks :) For the following 4 weeks after the 3-week iOS/Android bootcamp, you will be providing part-time instruction and support. This involves meeting with students twice a week for scheduled sessions. In these sessions, you will be providing technical support while the interns work on their final app project. In addition, you will also be introducing "spotlight skills" in these sessions. These are skills that they will need to learn to be successful in FBU and, ultimately, in the next 12-week SWE internship if they get a return offer for the following summer (e.g. basic debugging, finding technical answers independently, unit testing, etc spotlight skills). Again, your manager will ensure that you know everything you need, from a techinical perspective, to teach to interns. ### 📋 Key logistics * Remote work over Zoom and [Facebook Workplace](https://x.tejen.net/rgg) * **Phase 1:** 6-weeks * June 1st - June 20th: 40-50 hours of collaborative planning and technical training (remote flextime) * June 21st - July 9th: Full-time support during Facebook University from * Total Compensation: $6K + bonuses in $1.5K increments (see details in contract) * **Phase 2:** 4-weeks * July 13th - August 7th: part-time instructional support * Separate, non-competitive application process. TBD * Total Compensation: TBD ### 💁 Ideal Profile * Aptitude for quickly debugging simple Android Java projects or Xcode Swift/Objective-C projects, and comfortable with debugging over screensharing calls with remote mouse/keyboard control * Enjoys informal mentoring with a bedside manner * Conversationalist. Strong interpersonal skills to convert any atmostphere into a fun, inviting and engaging vibe. * Quickly identifies, evaluates, and adapts to new people with diverse backgrounds and attitudes, holds a group's attention, provokes communication, and fosters a fun atmosphere * Patient listening and working with empathy comes naturally to you * Available full-time for the three weeks, and available as part-time Intern Mentor for an additional 4 weeks We believe that innovation is generally at its highest when people are put in an environment where people's creativity is celebrated and allowed to flow. This is the type of high-energy environment that we are trying to generate, to bring out the creativity in our interns, and ensure that our interns perform at their peak, as they build out an entire app project of their choice throughout the internship. --- ## 🚀 Applying for the position We use a rapid 2-step application & interview process to assess candidates for the Ideal Profile qualities listed above. ### Step 1️⃣: Debugging Challenge screening **[🔗 Click here](https://x.tejen.net/mv4) to submit the application form** and upload a screencast of yourself completing the Debugging Challenge by the **May 22nd 11:59pm PT** deadline.
