どんなチーム？

宇宙や地球の極限的な自然現象は、人類未踏の科学フロンティアです。榎戸は、宇宙で最強の磁石星「中性子星」をＸ線で観測し、天体物理学の研究を行ってきました。その測定技術を応用し、雷や雷雲という極限自然現象で生じる放射線の研究にも挑戦しています。世界的にも珍しい日本海沿岸の冬季雷を対象に多地点観測網を構築し、雷での光核反応の解明など高エネルギー大気物理学という分野を開拓します。このプロジェクトの理念は Collective Power of Science。単一の巨大装置ではなく、多数の装置を有機的に結びつけ科学成果を出していく発想です。この言葉には、学術系クラウドファンディングやオープンサイエンスも活用し、科学を研究者に閉ざさず、社会との協調のなかで文化として捉えなおしたい想いがあります。この理念を軸に、複数の超小型衛星をスケーラブルに協調運用する新しいX線観測に挑戦し、重力波天文学や系外惑星のテーマも視野に入れた宇宙の研究に応用したいと考えています。このような視点のもとに、榎戸極限自然現象理研白眉研究チームの時代には、理研白眉プロジェクトとして「高エネルギー大気物理学の開拓と次世代の宇宙観測への応用」を主要な研究課題としてプロジェクトを進めました。超小型衛星 NinjaSat によるＸ線天体の観測に加え、京都大学では、銀河宇宙線で生成される中性子を用いた月面の水資源探査、それを発展させた月面天文台の計画なども進めています。

雷雲プロジェクト

身近な雷という現象から、予想もされていなかったガンマ線が検出されるようになりました。これは雷のトリガーが何かという謎を解く新しい鍵であるだけでなく、火星や木星、原始惑星系円盤でも起きているであろう雷までスコープに入れれば、宇宙の強電場で起きる物理現象に新しい視点を与えています。私たちは、世界的にみても強力な日本海沿岸の雷雲を観測対象とし、冬季雷からの放射線の精密観測を行うことで、雷が光核反応を起こすことを世界に先駆けて観測的に発見しました。雷は原子核現象を起こすのです。これまでは電波や可視光で観測されてきた雷を、私たちは市民サイエンスの視点も取り入れた多地点での放射線観測網で捉え直し、雷雲の中でおきる様々な高エネルギー大気現象を解明していきます。いまパラダイム・シフトがおきつつある「雷放電と雷雲の高エネルギー大気物理学」という新しい学術分野を自分たちの手で作り上げます。

超小型衛星 NinjaSat

あらゆる分野において、科学プロジェクトの巨大化が起きています。この理研白眉研究チームに通底するマインドは “Collective Power of Science” です。これは、単一の超弩級戦艦を作るのではなく、１台１台はシンプルな性能をもつ装置を多数運用することで、１台の巨大装置ではできない科学観測を行うというもので、雷雲の地上観測網もまさにそれです。この発想を、宇宙にも展開したいと考えています。高い感度を実現するには大きな宇宙望遠鏡が必要ですが、最近の技術進展を活用して 6U CubeSat サイズの超小型衛星で宇宙Ｘ線観測を実現できる体制に挑戦します。国際宇宙ステーションに2017年に搭載された大面積Ｘ線望遠鏡 Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) の望遠鏡と検出器技術などをスピンオフすることで、シンプルな小型Ｘ線望遠鏡を実現し、衛星艦隊として運用することで観測ギャップを低減しつつ、広い天体強度に対応できる観測体制を目指します。これは大型衛星とは相補的で、教育と研究の両方を視野に入れたプロジェクトで、現在準備中の「NinjaSat」プロジェクトは2022年度の打ち上げを目指しています。

中性子による月水資源の探査

我々が発見した雷での光核反応では中性子が大気中に放出されることが明らかになりました。その検出を目指して、ガンマ線と中性子のパルス波形を弁別可能な新型の中性子モニタの開発を進めています。中性子は水分で散乱されやすい性質を利用すると、この中性子モニタは非接触の水分検出器としても使うことができます。そのため、雷の基礎物理的な研究だけではなく、腐食した配管に貯まる水分の検出に使うなど、今後のインフラの劣化が予想される日本での工的応用も視野に入れて、民間企業・工学研究者との打ち合わせを行っていきます。また、月面探査者（ローバー）に搭載すれば、月面の水資源探査にも活用できると予想され、惑星科学者とのコラボレーションも立ち上げています。

宇宙Ｘ線によるマグネターの観測的研究

これまでＸ線天文学で研究してきた、中性子星やその中でも最も磁場の強い天体「マグネター」で起きている強重力、高密度、強磁場、高速回転、強輻射場などの極限物理の現象の解明に、多波長観測や、新しい解析手法のアプローチを駆使して挑戦します。NICER が日々モニターしているブラックホールや中性子星のデータ解析はもちろんのこと、電波望遠鏡を使ったパルサー観測なども併用して、マグネター進化の解明や、宇宙論的な距離で起きる謎の電波バースト Fast Radio Burst (FRB)の解明、あるいは近傍の恒星フレアが系外惑星に与える影響をお隣さんの恒星系プロキシマ・ケンタウリの高エネルギーモニター観測などを通して挑戦するなども行います。また、超小型衛星では全天で最も明るいＸ線星「さそり座X-1」をモニターし、その準周期振動の観測から自転周期を長期推定することで、将来に重力波干渉計で期待されている定常重力波の発見に貢献します。

オープンサイエンス: 新しい科学の形

単に科学研究の成果を誰もがアクセスできるようにするという狭義の「オープンサイエンス」を超えて、誰もが科学研究に参加できるという広義の「オープンサイエンス」のあり方も模索しています。前職の京都大学では、友人たちと2016年に京都オープンサイエンス勉強会というのを立ち上げ、月に１回のKYOTO オープンサイエンス・ミートアップというイベントを開催してきました。2020年に東京での開催もめざし、今は「オープンサイエンス・ミートアップ」という名前で活動しています。また、オープンサイエンスやシチズンサイエンスを根付かせるために、日本版AAAS設立準備委員会のメンバーとしても活動しています。
