## FreeBSD Developer Summit -- AsiaBSDCon 2019

### Core Report
- Core trying to promote more working groups to drive progress
- Core now meets weekly instead of monthly
- Core wants to hear suggestions for improvements the community has
- Core publishes monthly reports in a timely fashion now
- CoC still a work in progress, delayed by many factors
- Trying to fight toxicity and negativity in the project
- Launched the 2019 developer survey
- Took over 200 hours to create
- Much has been learned from the results in just the first few days, mostly about how to formulate the questions and where the questions lacked clarity (how the ranking works)
- Intend to launch a user survey once we incorporate the lessons learned from the developer survey
- Trying to create question that will actual drive decisions, rather than just gauge sentiment
- New support model to deal with changes to upstream, and changes to what users expect. Will be guided by the results for the user survey.
- Core wants to drive a new bug busting team/working group
- Reduce developer friction, both people and process
- "Be the change you want to see in the project"

### Graphics on FreeBSD
- Update MESA
- Update Xorg to a modern version (1.20.4)
- New versions of autotools upstream
- Depend files not being generate correctly
- Shouldn't a big deal, but autotools, so yea
- Not upstreamed support for device hotplug
- We have evdev support in GENERIC, but stable releases still depend on devd
- Some support for hot-plug monitors via udev shim
- It is important that FreeBSD make its presense known/felt upstream
- Bi-weekly working group calls

### Drivers
- DRM kmod driver next target is Linux 5.0
- Requires updates to LinuxKPI in base
- Branch in the FreeBSDDesktop repo with both updates
- Review for commit to base: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D19565
- Removing the old drm kmod from base since it is outdated and conflicts with the newer version. Old version was Linux 3.8/3.11 and only supported up to some Haswell hardware (2013). Also, the DRM drivers in base used an older interface to x11 video drivers, so you need xf86-ati-legacy-video to use them.
- Future plan: using loader and/or devmatch + PnP data to automatically load the graphics drivers
