    # Plataforma de Intercâmbio Econômico entre Comunidades ## C1.- What kind of catalytic intervention does your project address? - Incorporation of new and different technologies - Local and indigenous content production - Sustainability, regional and cross-regional consolidation of Community Networks - Alternative economic systems connected with nature preservation and cultural autonomy (fortalecimento) ## Describe how you think your project will contribute to the catalytic interventions that you selected in section C1 above? | max. 300 words Our goal is to empower regional communities and create bonds of trust and cooperation among them in a regional scale and promote fair exchange of knowledge, culture, products and services in local and global scales. It's important to give the power back to the people in the places where they live integrating their communication process, cultural and spiritual values, water and food resources, economic transactions and nature conservation. In this project we are going to focus in a communication infrastructure and economic exchange system. All communities have resources to exchange and we want to support the networks of fair commerce that are already in course thru alternative economic opportunities that reinforce autonomy and is engaged in environmental conservation. We are going to focus in the Brazilian experience with the sociobiodiversity product chains, that are goods and services geared towards the creation of flows of value of interest to the indigenous peoples, traditional communities and family farmers, by promoting and empowering their practices and knowledge, guaranteeing to them the resulting rights, generating income, thus improving the quality of life of the people and of their environment. Despite their particularities both the traditional peoples and the institutions involved in the value chains of these products have similar demands and bottlenecks that are well mapped. Our intention in this project is to offer communication tools that can be used by all those involved to support them. Although our case study is in Brazil our goal is to develop a platform and a set of applications that can be used for communities world wide. We are going to develop these platforms in partnership with a cooperative that represents products from 40 small associations in the Brazilian savanna, and a group of indigenous craftswomen associated to the Associação Floresta Protegida, in the Amazon forest. ## C2.- What problem or challenge of a group of people, community, country and/or region will you be addressing in this project? Why is this important in your context? | max. 200 words In a wider perspective at this time of much political and land conflict, it’s important to create an agenda and discourse that are positive and not contaminated by the power struggle. The sectors that hold power in Brazil are not interested in valuing culture, tradition and human rights. Reinforcing economic trades that empower communities and the preservation of nature is a strategic action at this period. Many of the peoples involved in these productive systems are isolated because of the lack of connectivity. To insert them into production networks the tools that bridge the gap between them must respect their offline reality. At the same time in most cases the amount os products is not enough to pay for the logistics to get it to consumers. In those cases an application that supports collective operations of production and services are vital to make their actions viable and sustainable. Challenges for consolidation of socio-biodiversity chains of values are: 1. access to market and logistics 2. development of technology communication 3. cultural valorization 4. adequate infrastructure 5. land rights ## C3 – What are the objective/s of your project? How is your project relevant to the problem or challenge you described in question C2? | max. | max. 200 wordswords Our project aims at create an ecosystem of applications built on top of decentralized protocols, that enable offline communication and community control of data. The applications built on top of the ecosystem will serve to promote economic activities that positively impact forest and water conservation, as well as a wealthy culture for indigenous peoples, farmers and traditional communities with a net of products services and values connected to consumers. The project also encompasses two experiments. One experiment with a group os Kayapó women that works with art crafts and another with the cooperative Central do Cerrado that centralize distribution and commerce of dozens of products of many traditional communities in the region. We’ll be setting up the components of our community-first stack (mesh network, local server, cloud server, user applications) in two offline communities, and assisting them with financial and logistic tools in order to empower their economic resilience. ## C4.- What change(s) do you expect your project to contribute to? | max. 150 words We expect to improve how products and services are managed, with that their commercial value. This will generate income to the communities involved in the network, assisting the reconstruction of dignity and social, cultural, spiritual and economic empowerment to render people more autonomous. The improvement of communication skills brings possibilities and reinforce collaborative bonds of producers and consumers in an fair trade network. ## C5.- Beneficiaries: Who will benefit (directly and indirectly) from this project? Please explain how they will benefit, what changes it will bring to their lives | max. 250 words Central do Cerrado is a non-profit cooperative created by 35 community organizations spread across 7 Brazilian states that develop activities around sustainable use of the Brazilian savana biodiversity. It operates as a bridge between community producers and consumers offering products that are collected from and processed by traditional communities and family farmers in the region. The cooperative works orchestrating many organizations manually, for the lack of a proper system. We plan on developing platforms directly based on their needs and experiences. The Kayapo are an indigenous people spread around 11 million hectares of native forest in the Brazilian Amazon. Recently they have been harassed by big infrastructure projects that are connecting their territories with surrounding cities thru roads. The consequences are of massive migrations of indigenous youth; growth of environmental exploitation thru ilegal mining and logging; and health issues thru higher consumption of industrialized products. The Kayapo youth that migrate to urban center are very attracted by new technologies. However they have no positive reference in how this technology could assist in empowering their culture and on the protection of their territory, creating a generation conflict where the elders believe the youth makes excessive use of smart phones. The Kayapo women generally stay by the village, so we plan on working with the needs of these women, applied to the production chains of their crafts, so that they may act as filters to content and products that enter and leave the village. ## C6.- Describe all the activities that you will carry out in your project. For each list the outputs (deliverables) and the expected date of completion ### Activity – related Outputs - dates - Distributed system development - offline-first, decentralized and delay tolerant databases for all platforms to run the applications on - July/August/September - Design and development of applications to run on the distributed system - October/November - Field research - content for the documentary and assessment of community needs - Augost - Community Network setup - two small mesh networks in selected offline villages - November - Community network capacity building - November/December - Documentary - December - Animation short - December ## C7. Gender component: You need to clearly address gender related issues in your project. Please describe how it will include women and girls and/or transform their lives. | max. 100 words We’ll be working with groups of women in both Central do Cerrado and the indigenous communities. But with the Kayapo working with the women is vital as they generally stay by the village and know what happens around it. At this moment of great impact in Kayapo culture, where the men are mainly responsible for the contact with globalized culture, the Kayapo people themselves have realized the importance of empowering women in taking part of the decision making processes of projects and resources that reach the village. So we plan in creating applications based on what the needs are for economically empowering their value chains. ## C8. People living with disabilities: Does your project include people living with disabilities as leaders or beneficiaries? If yes, tell us how they will be involved and what changes you expect. | max. 100 words Beneficiaries - All members of the communities. ## C9. Indigenous people: Are indigenous people leaders or beneficiaries of your project? If yes, tell us how the will be involved and what changes you expect. | max. 100 words Indigenous people are going to be leaders of the project. In first place we are going to work with the Kayapó people directly and our other partner, Central do Cerrado, also works with indigenous people. We are part of a platform called Xingu + that has his main goal to give indigenous people.... Kayapó are part os this articulation. ## C10.- How will you monitor and evaluate the implementation and outcomes of the project? | max. 100 words All activities are going to be part of projects and initiatives that are already in action and have a organization and a team working on it. This work flow will make possible to measure the impact and keep it working after the end of the project. # C11. What skills and resources are available in your organisation(s) for this task? #### Know How #### Team We are a team that got together recently with different but complementary expertises. Pedro is an anthropologist and filmmaker that spent his professional life traveling in the amazon region. Mora em uma fazenda em Alto Paraíso de Goiás onde produz em um sistema agroflorestal mandioca para a fabricação do Yuka, bicoito de mandioca vegano, em parceria com sua companheira. Tem experiência em agrcicultura, mercado de produtos alimentícios, comunicação, produção e gestão de projetos. Atualmente se dedica ao Desenvolvimento de tecnologias de comunicação e informação aplicadas a gestão do território e da sócio-biodiversidade por meio da integração de conceitos e práticas da pesquisa aplicada, produção de conteúdo multimídia e produção cultural. Perfil multitarefas. Está sempre abrindo novos caminhos. Diego: Diego has experience in decentralized applications and sustainable agriculture projects. Luandro has been living and experiencing life in a traditional community for 5 years, understanding the needs these communities have. His research and growth in the field of information technology has been directed towards those needs, so his has experience in setting up mesh networks in rough terrains, and developing mobile and desktop applications using distributed databases that put offline people as first class citizens. Rodrigo Ponzio (Designer) worked for a lot of years as a designer and creative director for publicity big agencies in São Paulo. Recently he started his own colective called Coletivo Reverte focused in design for projects that have positive social and environmental impact. ## C12.- What is the relevance of your project for the community network movement? Think about ways to make outputs reusable, generate content or tools, document the experience, etc. | max. 100 words One of the biggest problems in many community networks today is the lack of deeper social meaning, as many end up becoming a tool for digital exploitation thru the internet. We intend to create a well documented economic platform to be appropriated and re-used in communities outside the scope of this project. The platform is of use to community networks around the globe because it puts local community data at the center, empowering it's cultural and economic resilience. A platform that strengthens value chains of traditional communities is a way of resisting environmental exploitation and of preserving traditional knowledge. ## C13.- How will the project contribute to the work and sustainability of your organisation(s)? | 100 words The proposing organization is committed to creating a pole of attraction and diffusion in Information and Communication Technologies applied to the management of territories and natural resources to research, create and disseminate contents, softwares and hardware based on concrete demands of society. Beneficiary organizations are institutions directly involved in the management of territories and natural resources along with the communities that created and support them. The objectives of this project are a synthesis of the objectives of all the institutions involved. Through its execution the proponent organization will expand its scope of action and its network of partners and the beneficiary institutions will be directly benefited in its operations of management and trade and exchange of knowledge. > A organização proponente está comprometida com a criação dCriar um polo de atração e difusão em Tecnologias da informação e comunicação aplicados à gestão de territórios e recursos naturais para pesquisar, criar e difundir conteúdos, softwares e hardwares a partir de demandas concretas da sociedade. As organizações beneficiárias são instituições diretamente envolvidas em processos de gestão de territórios e recursos naturais juntamente com as comunidades que as criaram e apoiam. Os objetivos desse projeto são uma síntese dos objetivos do conjunto das instituições envolvidas. Por meio de sua execução a organização proponente vai ampliar seu escopo de ação e sua rede de parceiros e as instituições beneficiárias serão diretamente beneficiadas em suas operações de gestão e comércio e troca de conhecimentos. ## C14. What obstacles or risks could prevent this project from being successful? What will you do to try to prevent or overcome these obstacles? | 100 words * - Exploitation - Centralization/Monopoly - Logistics operation In a recent survey carried out by a member of the team on the economic viability of an ecommerce platform for socio-biodiversity products, all e-commerce initiatives associated with socio-biodiversity products and family agriculture products were analyzed. All initiatives with some degree of success have in common the presence of technical assistance in the field. Technology solutions are tools to enhance pre-existing arrangements. The presence in field is critical to the success of any tool for the context of the value chains of the sociobiodiversity. A successful digital platform, depends on the technical presence in the field. > Em uma pesquisa recente feita realizada por um integrante da equipe sobre a viabilidade econômica de uma plataforma de ecommerce para os produtos da sociobiodiversidade foram analisadas todas as inciativas de comércio eletrônico associados aos produtos da sociobiodiversidade e pordutos da agricultura familiar. O principal componente que determina o fracasso ou sucesso das atividades são as Instituições de apoio com presença em campo. Todas as iniciativas em curso com algum grau de sucesso têm em comum a presença de assistência técnica em campo. As soluções em tecnologia são ferramentas para potencializar arranjos pré-existentes. A presença em campo é fundamental para o sucesso de qualquer iniciativa de ferramenta digital para o contexto das cadeias de valor da sociobiodiversidade. Uma plataforma digital, seja ela qual for não vai substituir a necessidade da presença de apoio técnico em campo. Pelo contrário, o sucesso da plataforma depende dessa presença. ## C16.- How much are you applying for? * We expect applicants to design projects requesting funds up to USD 25,000 to USD 30,000 (or USD 40,000 for joint submissions). There is additional value if you have other sources of funding to complement these funds. However, taking into account the costs of certain technologies, we are open to receiving proposals up to USD 60,000 if the applicants can justify the need for such an increased budget. 26,000 USD ( a soma de orçamentos sempre deve dar 8) ## C17.- Please describe the types of support you would like to receive from APC and the LOCnet project during the implementation of this project | 100 words ?? translation ?? spread the use of the system exchange os knowolodge .......................................... We live in a period where the world agreements made in the end os seconde world war by the most powerfull contries felt apart. We are living a process of re-organisation of the world Arise of ultra liberalism, concentrantion of resources, increase of conflicts, crises in representative democratic politics, and transnational coorporations controling the finantial system and the ... . Produtos da Sociobiodiversidade são bens e serviços (produtos finais, matérias primas ou benefícios) gerados a partir de recursos da biodiversidade, voltados à formação de cadeias produtivas de interesse dos povos e comunidades tradicionais e de agricultores familiares, que promovam a manutenção e valorização de suas práticas e saberes, e assegurem os direitos decorrentes, gerando renda e promovendo a melhoria de sua qualidade de vida e do ambiente em que vivem. Ex: Açaí, Castanhas, Babaçu, resinas, fibras, cacau e outros. Apesar do grande potencial latente nessas cadeias produtivas elas enfrentam muitos desafios para se consolidarem. Entre eles podemos citar, 1 - acesso a mercado e logística, 2 desenvolvimento de comunicação de tecnologia, 3 - valorização cultural, 4 - infra estrutura adequada. Nos últimos anos muitas instituições engajadas no apoio ao desenvolvimento comunitário de povos e comunidades tradicionais vem trabalhando para criar e fortalecer as cadeias produtivas, gerando conhecimento, engajamento político e proteção dos territórios e conservação da biodiversidade. Atualmente essas organizações tem se reunido em torno de um projeto comum visando potecializar o comércio de produtos da sociobiodiversidade como uma alternativa para a conservação da sociobiodiversidade, geração de renda e defesa dos territórios. Esse movimento é fruto do amadurecimento dos envolvidos, associado a situação política do Brasil, com um governo de extrema direita que tem por objetivo destruir os povos e comunidades tradicionais e suas instituições. Potencializar as cadeias produtivas da sociobiodiversidade é uma estratégia de luta que envolve os seguintes aspectos: geração de renda, produção de conhecimento, ocupar e conhecer o território, fortalecer a práticas tradicionais integrando-as a inovação tecnológica, articulação e visibilidade internacional por meio do comércio de produtos e serviços que conservam a biodiversidade. Nesse momento de muito conflito político e fundiário é importante criarmos uma agenda e um discurso alternativo e positivo que não esteja contaminado pela disputa de poder. Os setores que detêm o poder no Brasil não se interessam pelo discurso de valoriação da tradição e dos direitos humanos. Esse contexto nacional associado a uma visão capitalista / financista do mundo no cenário internacional nos colocam em um momento de extrema fragilidade. Nesse sentido é importante construirmos uma estratégia que seja capaz de unir os povos e comunidades, gerar renda, manter a floresta em pé, valorizar a cultura, e unir tradição e inovação, para que essa ação faça sentido no mundo atual e tenha uma perspectiva de futuro. A tradição precisa constantemente ser atualizada para que permaneça existindo e fazendo sentido. A organização das cadeias de valor dos produtos da sociobiodiversidade é um fio condutor capaz de agregar todos os elementos listados acima. Apesar das particularidades tanto os povos tradicionais quanto as instituições envolvidas nas cadeias de valor dos produtos da sociobio tem demandas e gargalos semelhantes que estão bem mapeados. Nosso intuito nesse projeto é oferecer ferramentas para de tecnologia e comunicação que possam ser utilizados pelo conjunto dos envolvidos para apoia-los. Muitos dos povos envolvidos nesses sistemas produtivos estão isolados por falta de conectividade. Para inseri-los nas redes de produção a tecnologia usada para criar as ferramentas que serviram para criar uma ponte entre eles deve respeitar sua realidade offline. A infraestrutura de comunicação, as plataformas e até a semântica econômica usada nessa rede deve ser aberta (Open Source) e o mais resiliente possível. Redes mesh com roteadores são perfeitas para dar a esses povos uma conectividade dentro da sua própria comunidade, ao mesmo tempo que empodera a comunidade com sua própria infraestrutura de comunicação. Mas sem conectividade com a internet o conteúdo gerado fica isolado na comunidade onde é criado, e não é compartilhado com outras comunidades com quem gostaria de colaborar. Para isso protocolos decentralizados na camada de aplicativos, que funcionam como banco de dados distribuídos, são essenciais para garantir que o conteúdo possa ser transportado junto aos dispositivos que são móveis. Uma vez que até mesmo os produtores que estão offline possam colaborar com a rede, o desafio é organizar os movimentos econômicos de forma que seja atendinda toda a diversidade de produtos e a administração e logística ques dão a eles valor. É fundamental ter um vocabulário econômico para redes distribuídas, sem um ponto único de produção ou consumo. Nesse projeto pretendemos decentralizar nas camadas de infraestrutura, com redes mesh; de aplicativos, com banco de dados dados distribuídos; e a administração de cadeias de valores, com um vocabulário econômico para redes distribuídas. Seram feitos experimentos de infraestrutura em duas comunidades que fazem parte da rede mas não possuem conectividade por conta de seu isolamento. Os experimentos seguiram os métodos segundo a documentação do roteador aberto, o Libre Router, e usando o framework aberto de redes mesh, LibreMesh. Seram construídas duas ferramentas principais. A primeira é uma plataforma na nuvem que serve como centralizador de informações, e por isso nele é feito o backup dos arquivos e do banco de dados. A segunda é o aplicativo que sera usado pelos membros da rede para comunicarem mudanças na cadeia de produção e consumo dos produtos. O aplicativo é feito usando os protocolos Secure Scuttlebutt e Dat para distribuir os dados, de forma que os usuários possam ter controle com quem estão compartilhando informações e carregar consigo seu banco de dados. Informações são sincronizadas com outros aparelhos rodando o aplicativo por meio de Bluetooth, ou usando uma rede local ou a internet como ponte entre pontos distantes da malha. O objetivo é criar uma ponte para todos na rede e ter a melhor experiência de usuário possível para todas as realidade da rede que estamos construindo, seja na floresta amazônica ou em um centro urbano. Categorizar as nuancias de fluxos de valores tão diversos exige um vocabulário econômico extenso e próprio para tais redes em que responsabilidades são distribuídas em todas etapas do processo, e não centralizadas em uma única organização. ValueFlows é um vocabulário econômico que permite a categorização de processos, e dos recursos e trocas envolvidas neles, criado especificamente para o uso em redes econômicas distribuídas e mantido por um diverso time de colaboradores de maneira aberta como o software livre. Implementando essa semântica como meta dado dos fluxos das plataformas a serem construídas permite interações das mais diversas entre os agentes das cadeias dos produtos da sociobiodiversidade. Como colaboradores dos projetos citados a cima teremos a oportunidade de contribuir com o avanço de todas essas tecnologias conforme as necessidades e soluções apareçam. Como todo o software desenvolvido sera open-source e bem documentado, esperamos que essa plataforma econômica sirva não apenas para essa rede que ja abrange muitos povos, mas também para qualquer outra comunidade que queira participar dessa rede ou começar a sua própria. ## Funcionalidades da plataforma - Cadastro de agentes e organizações produtivas, seus produtos e serviços; - Cadastro de consumidores e iniciativas de comercialização, suas demandas e serviços; - Cadastro de agentes e organizações de assessoria e seus serviços; - Ambiente de interação de oferta de demanda de produtos; - Ambiente de interação de oferta e demanda de serviços (transporte, armazenamento, vendas, logística, assessorias diversas); - Acompanhamento e mediação do pagamento; - Integração e otimização de logísticas; - Compartilhamento de informações de fornecedores de insumos, equipamentos, serviços técnicos e outras informações uteis, fomentando a compra conjunta de insumos e serviços;
