    # Wireless Challenge (Call #2) https://wirelesschallenge.mozilla.org/ ## Previously - [07 September 2017 - Call #1](https://hackmd.io/KYIwZgrAxgzCDsBaADBATATkQFgGzCkQA4YATMRU0gQ2rVyhAEYJgig=) ## Call setup | Time | Location | | ------------------------- | -------- | | PST 1500h, Wed 11th | Mumble | | NZT 1100h, Thu 12th | Mumble | Mumble setup: - download the [mumble installer](https://www.mumble.com/) - ADDRESS: `celehner.com` - PORT: `64738` - choose push-to-talk # agenda - Add to this - Say hi - Updates & Action Item followups - what have people been doing? - what do people need / are blocked on? / anything you need ? - Decide on 'Team Leader' / point of contact w/ Mozilla - - **noffle**: I noticed that the description on the Mozilla/WINS website says "Wireless solutions for communication that can be rapidly deployed in post-disaster situations where Internet access is unavailable or compromised". This implies that the populace may have never used any of this software before the disaster. I'd like to talk through the implications of this re maps and especially SSB, where having a pre-made social graph is very important. - **nanomonkey**: Finalizing initial circuit board design for testing. This will be a Wemos D1 Mini (ESP8266 breakout board) hat, that connects to the lora chip and provides power and an antenna connection. Need to know how many people will need these, whether the boards should be sent to NZ or CA, etc. Also, if anyone wants to review the board (piet? => keen to review! :) ) please check it out [here](https://github.com/nanomonkey/lora-to-nodemcu-circuit). - What do communities in Guyana need? ## who's here? What's your name and/or handle, which project are you working on and _very_ briefly: which aspects of the project are you working on and what excites you about this. - piet - robb - sierk - cel - dominic - jenny - juul - mixmix - nanomonkey - noffle ## REVIEW and updates - juul: will write up some docs, with links, and send to the group - firmware + app on github, getting there - writing a web server (so you can use without hardware) - docs : delayed, but have started, have been writing about power management (https://github.com/sudomesh/disaster-radio/wiki) - dominic: hack on routing protocol - nope - next want to write network simulator - jenny: send along sudomesh bylaws/processes for decision-making, conflict resolution, etc - sent out to disaster radio mailing list + ssb - block ? if people are cool with governance we can adopt them, might need formalising - jenny: set up a mailing list for project on the sudoroom mailman - https://sudoroom.org/lists/listinfo/disasterradio - cel: read disaster-radio repos. see if have esp8266; if so, try building and flashing disaster-radio firmware on it. might request hw from juul. tell #spiderfarm about project - nope - have some hardware (esp8266) - noffle: reach out to DigiDem folks to see if they're interested in collaboration /w existing indiginous groups - spoke with Emily at Digital Democracy. She raised that most of their partners aren't a great match. Presumes wifi-enabled charged devices - the hardware people in Guyana have - satellite uplink for internet (very slow, expensive $5k / year) - no comms between villages - many small villages, some have satellite - would perhaps like a local link between villages - small pool of laptops (shared?), a few low-end androids - there's an 'Internet Hut' - suggested speaking to bay area local city / govs - grant: get a one-link chat app running - ? he's awayv - buggy but working (nano) - dominic: talk to disasterradio (human) to see if they're cool with us using their alias - nope, but hanging out with luke on friday # Updates - Mix - nothing to report - Nano: - would like people to review PCB (kicad) - who needs the board? (shall we send to NZ?) - Noffle - need some conceptual help understanding how the apps work /w the hardware & how people use them - Piet - keen to help with nano's PCB work - do you need help paying for things? - Sierjke - pass - cel - not sure what to do - interested in hardware + apps - should be able to run server already - https://github.com/sudomesh/disaster-radio - Nano: - how do we do small segments of data on ssb? - Juul: - check out limitations of hardware - https://github.com/sudomesh/disaster-radio/wiki/LoRa - Dominic - we might not be able to use standard ssb - Juul - 256B maximum packet size - Dominic - pass - Jenny - started another Hackmd for grant submission : https://hackmd.io/EYdgpmDMCcAmAMBaSBGeJEBYBm8WOgCZsNpgwBWYlCkSWFIA# - block : need a portal link - Juul will communicate with Mozilla about re-sending link - sierkje can sort email password? - draft : please add a bio, roles, please brag - deadline due November 15th - get bios in by November 10th - for those on the call, fill out bio after the call - Juul - nic joined recently, has helped with people's open network - doing design work, artist in residence at AutoDesk - designing the case / enclosue + mounting - leez: working on power system designs - also found someone to work on the design of downward-pointing wifi antenna - fitz: has been helping scott with kicad work and some electronics layout - blocks: have ideas for design&documentation but doesn't have time / skills, eg; simple website, kicad mockups, animations, diagrams, illustrations etc ## Use Cases / Angle From the Off-Grid Challenge text: > How can we leverage wireless technology to keep people connected to each other and to vital information sources in the aftermath of a disaster where Internet access is unavailable or compromised? The Off-the-Grid Internet Challenge seeks ideas that can provide connectivity in one of the most challenging situations: the immediate aftermath of a major disaster. With a total of $1M in prize money, the Off-the-Grid Internet Challenge seeks solutions that help individuals wirelessly access each other and information services like maps and messaging following a disaster. > - hack on some storytelling / use cases during Science Hack Day (jenny, juul, nanomonkey) ## Design - microusb? bad to allow unrecognized devices to connect to phone - if we switch to esp32, could connect over bluetooth - could experiment with various rooftop mounts (nic is working on some designs) - # ToDo ## For challenge - get bios in by November 10th (all): https://hackmd.io/EYdgpmDMCcAmAMBaSBGeJEBYBm8WOgCZsNpgwBWYlCkSWFIA# - add to submission text (draft hackpad above) (jenny, mix, ?) - animations, graphics, video (robb, juul, sierk) - simple website - sierk, jenny - storytelling / use cases (Science Hack Day - jenny, nanomonkey, juul(?), sierk, jorrit ## For project otherwise # Next Meeting - Wednesday, October 25th, 3pm PST / 9(?)am NZ - noffle: I'm gone until 26th, but I can leave hackpad notes - noffle: I'm gone until 26th, but I can leave hackpad notes ## Action Items for next meeting - juul: technical documentation, fix chat bugs, video production - keep libraries small (esp8266). cap of 2-3 MB on device, bundle should be less than 100 KB, ideally less. Need to test load speed - nanomonkey: circuitboard finalized and hopefully ordered - noffle: read documentation, try chat app - piet: get kicad going, look at the designs - robb - sierkje: graphics and website, help with video - cel: get the web app working, think about ssb over the protocol - dominic: - jenny: finish the 501c3 application this week, shift to storytelling use cases, hack on submission questions text - mix: get web app working, review / feedback on any writing # reference ## deadlines - Intent to apply: 15th of October 2017, one second before midnight, pacific time. - Design application: 15th of November 2017, one second before midnight, pacific time. - Prototype application: 22nd of June 2018, one second before midnight, pacific time. ## documents - [Application guide + application form](https://assets.mofoprod.net/nsf/NSFWINSapplicationguide.pdf) - [Grant rules](https://wirelesschallenge.mozilla.org/rules-and-regulations/) - [DisasterRadio Submission Draft](https://hackmd.io/EYdgpmDMCcAmAMBaSBGeJEBYBm8WOgCZsNpgwBWYlCkSWFIA#) - [DisasterRadio Github Repo](https://github.com/sudomesh/disaster-radio)
