# OpenTEK for Researchers / Students

If you are a researcher or student, there are 2 entry types that are included in OpenTEK that are of particular interest for you. Both datasets are also actively being developed further and are open for participation.

## 1. Article review:

The LICCI Artice Review dataset is the result of an ongoing effort: reviewing scientist-led qualitative research investigating climate change impacts perceived by Indigenous peoples and local communities.

Using a systematic review approach, we have classified and organized the multi-site place-based information found in the articles following a hierarchical system, the [LICCI tree classification](user_guide?guide=licci-tree).

Besides this list of indicators according to the LICCI tree, the dataset includes also metadata about each article (title, DOI, author, ...) and information about the location of the research site (or sites).

## 2. Field data:

In order to test the LICCI tree and complete our picture of local climate change impacts we partnered with 50 researchers worldwide. Every one of these researchers proposed a field site, which you can see on this map

The selection of these field sites was conducted in such a way that it would complete our picture of how climate change impacts affect the livelihoods of Indigenous people and local communities. Another selection criteria was remoteness, selecting locations that were distant from weather stations. By this means we tackled the problem of having spatially biased weather records. Information from Indigenous and local knowledge in these areas would be highly valuable to address these biases.

Those researchers where trained in a data collection protocol (based on interviews and focus group discussions) specifically designed for this project in order to create a picture of all climate change impacts on their site.

Parts of that data will be progressively released in OpenTEK under the "Field study" entry type that is still under development

Next to those partners, we are also collaborating with even more researchers and students, training them on the data collection protocol. You can become part of that collaborator network here:

Since there are constantly fieldwork and articles been released which fit into these datasets, you can also help to complete the picture.

## Recognition of Indigenous peoples interests

The data in OpenTEK is a mix of Indigenous and local observations and scientific interpretations of these. We recognize that this information might be subject to specific data protection rights and should be managed following the [CARE](https://www.gida-global.org/care) principles of Indigenous data governance. In this line, we have decided to place the [Local Contexts Notices](https://localcontexts.org/notices/traditional-knowledge-notices/) here to support the recognition of Indigenous interests and that will function as place-holders on OpenTEK data until a TK or a BC Label is added by the community to replace it. **[See more about these issues here.
