Recognition of Indigenous peoples interests

The data in OpenTEK is a mix of Indigenous and local observations and scientific interpretations of these. We recognize that this information might be subject to specific data protection rights and should be managed following the CARE principles of Indigenous data governance. In this line, we have decided to place the following (Local Contexts) notices here to support the recognition of Indigenous interests and that will function as place-holders on OpenTEK data until TK or a BC Labels are added by the community to individual entries.

The TK Notice is a visible notification that there are accompanying cultural rights and responsibilities that need further attention for any future sharing and use of this material. The BC (Biocultural) Notice is a visible notification that there are accompanying cultural rights and responsibilities that need further attention for any future sharing and use of this material or data. The BC Notice recognizes the rights of Indigenous peoples to permission the use of information, collections, data and digital sequence information generated from the biodiversity or genetic resources associated with traditional lands, waters, and territories. The BC Notice may indicate that BC Labels are in development and their implementation is being negotiated. For more information about the BC Notices click here.
