Pack one week's worth of clothes and do laundry weekly
Laundry
- Do laundry before flying
- Pack dirty clothes differently to tell them apart, e.g. Folding vs. rolling clothes
- If traveling locally you can carry dirty clothes in a laundry bag
- Laundry day strategies
- Wear any unworn pants/shorts and shirts from the week, E.g. Jeans normally need an occassional wash
- Do a second wash for the clothes you're wearing during laundry day
- Buy 2 extra pairs of clothes to switch off wearing each week while the other is in the wash
- No drying machine
- Use washer's dry spin cycle if available
- Use hangers to air dry clothes
- No washing machine
Winter and suit jackets
- Wear when traveling
- Fold into the carry-on or in a large backpack
- Tie a winter jacket around the long handle of a roller suitcase while walking
Overhead bin space on flights
Ask for a plastic bag to take items out of your bag if it is too big for the overhead bin
Toiletries
- Use leak proof containers
- Screw on tops are more secure
- Tops with locking feature
- E.g. toiletry bottles
Food
Pack snacks for the day of travel and the day of arrival
Razor blades and scissors
- Safety razor: Keep in the outside pocket of the carry-on to show to security.
- Scissors (Less than 4 in from the pivot point) for United States TSA standards
Testing completed pack
- Test overpacking to see how much you can bring back, E.g. How many additional t-shirts can you pack?
- Test what you can take out and wear if needed
Unpacking and repacking
- Keep items as close together as possible when unpacking to make it easier to repack when traveling
- Gather items first before packing to reduce the distraction of going back and forth
