  • Hello, Community! Since AlmaLinux OS has shifted its direction to ABI compatibility, we can now provide additional content for our community. For that reason, two additional repositories have been added - Testing and Synergy. Today, we are announcing that both repositories are available for AlmaLinux OS 8 and AlmaLinux OS 9. Testing Repository As we mentioned last week, the Testing repository contains security updates that AlmaLinux OS is now able to release without waiting for the patches to be released upstream. As these packages require additional testing before being released, we invite the community to help to test them and provide feedback. Note: The Testing repository is recommended only for non-production machines. To enable the Testing repository on AlmaLinux machines, run the following command: dnf install -y almalinux-release-testing

  • Hello, Community! We'd like to announce that ELevate project now supports upgrades from 8.x to 9.x within your chose distrubution! Visually, you can see ELevate supports the following migration directions: * - migration to CentOS Stream 9 is currently in process and will be available later. ** - migration to Oracle Linux 9 is available with the Oracle Leapp utility and will not be supported by ELevate project. As usual, this is a simple reminder to make sure you have backups and/or snapshots of your system before you proceed. It is recommended to do a trial run in a sandbox to verify that migration worked as expected before you attempt to migrate any production system. For more details, please, visit the the webpage and ELevate wiki page. You may also wanna check out the ELevate Quick Start Guide to start with. We are eager to get your feedback, contributions, and bug reports as they are helpful in making the migration more stable and adding support for other operating systems and making the migration more stable.

  • Earlier this week a few vulnerabilities have been reported to affect Intel and AMD CPUs. AlmaLinux OS Foundation calls for community to help to test updated packages for AlmaLinux OS 8 and AlmaLinux OS 9. How do I install updated packages? As AlmaLinux OS has changed its build processes in order to be ABI compatible with Red Hat, Testing repo has been created for packages that differ from RHEL and require additional testing by community. To be able to help with testing, Testing repo should be enabled on AlmaLinux machine: dnf install -y almalinux-release-testing It's highly recommended to enable Testing repo on all non-production machines to participate in AlmaLinux development. CVE-2022-40982 aka Downfall (Intel)

  • Hello! I'm Elkhan Mammadli and you may know me as an avid AlmaLinux contributor and the head of AlmaLinux Cloud Images SIG. Today I'd like to share an absolutely awesome story about collaboration–the open source way. AlmaLinux OS has come a long way in a very short time. We’ve been fully committed to delivering the best possible experience for the community, no matter where or what you run. A big part of ensuring the quality of our releases is testing; lots and lots of testing. A while ago we went looking for a good testing automation framework to build into our release process. Thanks to a fortuitous session at FOSDEM, we decided to've implemented the openQA, which is used by a few other distros, including openSuse, Fedora and Debian. There were a couple of problems before we could get started though. openQA didn’t have support for RHEL or derivatives, didn’t support the RHEL virt stack and it also didn’t have support for s390x–so we added them. What is openQA and how does it work? Simply put, openQA is an automated test tool for operating systems. It simplifies automated testing of the whole installation process of an operating system in a wide combination of software and hardware configurations. The openQA tool uses virtual machines to reproduce predefined processes and check the output against what it expects. You can check out the openQA site or our openQA User Guide for more details. How did we do it?

  • Late last year we expereinced a system failure that resulted in the loss of the master key that would allow us to extend the life of the GPG key that we use to sign packages for AlmaLinux 8, and it is set to expire in January of 2024. While we have ensured that this won't happen again, some users will need to take specific steps to import the new GPG key. If you keep your system up to date, you don't need to take any further action. If your device is running a little behind in updates for AlmaLinux 8, please read more below to identify the actions you need to take. On January 12, 2024 we will start signing RPM packages and repodata for AlmaLinux 8 with the updated GPG key. Taking the steps below will allow you to continue to recieve updates without problems when we make the switch. Fast track If you want to make sure your system already includes and trusts new AlmaLinux 8 GPG key you can just import it:

  • As the Leapp tool is designed to perform one-step migrations, in order to migrate your CentOS 7 machine to AlmaLinux 9 you need to split the migration process: CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 8 AlmaLinux 8 to AlmaLinux 9 Migrate CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 8 Update the system to get the latest updates and reboot your machine.sudo yum update -y sudo reboot Install elevate-release package with the project repo and GPG key.sudo yum install -y http://repo.almalinux.org/elevate/elevate-release-latest-el$(rpm --eval %rhel).noarch.rpm

  • ELevate Quickstart Guide ::: warning Before beginning, we HIGHLY recommend that you follow system administration best practices and make sure you have backups and/or snapshots of your system before you proceed. It is recommended to do a trial run in a sandbox to verify that migration worked as expected before you attempt to migrate any production system. Please report any issues encountered to the AlmaLinux Bug Tracker and/or AlmaLinux Chat Migration Channel ::: :::danger The ELevate project only supports official operating systems repositories. It doesn’t support external repositories like EPEL. Please, check the ELevate Frequent Issues page for known and frequent issues. ::: This guide contains steps on how to upgrade your RHEL-based operating system to the next major version.

  • AlmaLinux OS is a downstream of RHEL. We clone the upstream sources, then if necessary the packages are also modified and de-branded. AlmaLinux believes in the communal spirit of open-source and sees each user as an invaluable collaborator. AlmaLinux OS supports and recommends following the "upstream first" approach in this matter. User contributions to CentOS Stream not only enhance AlmaLinux but also enrich the entire Enterprise Linux ecosystem, including RHEL and CentOS Stream. And any bug report, bug fix and contribution to CentOS Stream will eventually be rebuilt to AlmaLinux. We invite you to join us in this endeavor, upholding the open-source principles of trust, transparency, honesty, integrity, and mutual respect. Together, we can continue to create a vibrant and innovative platform for all. You can see how you can help and contribute on the Contribute page. What has AlmaLinux already delivered to the Enterprise Linux ecosystem and community?
