## What are Hacker Spaces?

From movies like Hackers to even video games like Ubisoft's Watch Dogs 2, the theme of computer savvy geeks congregating in dimly lit rooms with glowing screens has been a pop culture phenomenon for decades.


[Hackerspaces](https://wiki.hackerspaces.org/Hackerspaces) are real community-operated physical places, where people share their interest in tinkering with technology, meet and work on their projects, and learn from each other. There are thousands of hackerspaces throughout the world, [seen here](https://wiki.hackerspaces.org/List_of_Hackerspaces):


The movement originated in Germany with spaces like [c-base](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-base), pictured below.

## HackLabTO

[HackLab.TO](https://hacklab.to) is a community space with a diverse membership, including artists, computer programmers, web designers, and hardware hackers.


It is inspired by the philosophies of the global hackerspaces movement which encourages people to socialize, share knowledge, and work together on their projects. Newcomers are welcome every Tuesday night.


Members get 24/7 access to the space and all resources. To become a member of the Hacklab:

- Visit the hacklab on a couple open house nights, introduce yourself to several members, and express your interest to join the lab.
- Ask two members to sponsor you for membership. Your membership request will be communicated to all existing members.
- Your application will go through a 3-day waiting period, during which time current members have an opportunity to comment on it.
- After three days, the Operations Officer will contact you to arrange for paying your dues ($50/mo) and getting memberized!

## NSL

Null Space Labs is for anyone doing interesting things with technology and security. Since May 2010, NSL has offered wifi, coworking space, an electronics and hardware lab (with soldering stations and rework equipment), a wet lab, wood and metal working tools, public computers, an arcade, and, most of all, a creative environment that’s open to visitors.


NSL members work on various projects every week, including DIY electronics, hardware hacking, software programming, hacking (exploit development, penetration testing), information security, lock picking, game development, entrepreneurship, graphics programming, AI, photography, privacy, civil rights, and more!


The group that operates Null Space Labs sees itself as an infrastructure provider and exerts little influence over projects and events carried out at the lab. Members come from a variety of backgrounds and offer a wealth of experience, knowledge, and assistance for whatever you might be working on. NSL is trying to be financially independent and operate solely through membership fees, classes, and donations.

Standard membership is $40 USD per month, payable via Paypal or Bitcoin. Membership is not required to visit Null Space Labs, but it has many benefits:

- 15% off of all NSL Classes
- Access to all NSL electronics and rework equipment
- Access to all NSL machinery (Laser Cutter, Vinyl Cutter, 3D Printer, Machine Shop, and more!)
- Priority registration for NSL Field Trips
- Dedicated cubby space at NSL

## Noisebridge

Noisebridge is one of the oldest hackerspaces in the US. The space grew out of conversations between attendees of Chaos Communication Congress 2007 (24c3), and was originally modeled on c-base in Berlin and Metalab in Vienna.


The virtual HQ these fictional characters from the video game Watch Dogs 2 is actually inspired by a real life hackerspace in the Mission district of San Francisco.


NB aims to provide a space for people to hack, create, learn, and explore in a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment.


**Membership and Finances**

[Noisebridge members](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Membership) are the only folks in our community who are empowered to fully participate in Noisebridge's [consensus process](https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Consensus_Process). There's a [form](https://www.noisebridge.net/images/7/75/Noisebridgemembership.pdf) that must be filled out in order to become a member.

## Omni Commons

Omni Commons contains twelve Bay Area collectives with a shared political vision of more equitable commoning of resources and meeting human needs over private interests or corporate profit.

> What if one of the largest community centers and venue spaces in the Bay Area was run by a volunteer collective where everybody is a leader, where people give what they can and take what they need? We are trying to do just that, at the Omni Commons.

### Sudoroom

Sudo Room is an East Bay creative community and hackerspace. Sudo Room has an open membership, is nonhierarchical, and includes many “types”… tech developers, citizen scientists, activists, artists, and all combinations in between and beyond.

Most importantly, members are human beings interested in and working towards positive social change. Members share ideas and projects in the following areas:

- Citizen Science
- Digital Citizenship And Literacy
- Environmental Sustainability

The only requirements for becoming a member are to be in good standing with Sudo Room and to pay monthly dues of anywhere between $10 and ∞.

# Portal Hubs

These worlds use bi-directional hyperlinks (portals) between the hub and the virtual hackerspaces, similar purpose to [web rings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webring).

> A webring (or web ring) is a collection of websites linked together in a circular structure, and usually organized around a specific theme, often educational or social. They were popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, particularly among amateur websites

Portal Hubs can be made on any platform that supports links to other worlds, such as JanusXR, Cryptovoxels, and VRChat. Being cross-compatible is desired since each platform has something to offer.

## Kokiri Village

These portal hubs are made using [JanusXR](https://janusvr.github.io/guide/#/), a web framework for building interconnected virtual worlds from open standards. Janus "apps" are simply HTML files containing markup and Javascript for interactivity, sort of like a modern take on [VRML](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VRML).

Makers district is one of the oldest districts in [Cryptovoxels](https://cryptovoxels.com) and started with a group of JanusXR devs that all pitched in some ETH to acquire land near each other to show off Metaverse projects.
