## Session: D&I Team Debrief
### General Notes
- D&I team has been a bit inactive in the last 1-2 years
- If people can no longer be involved in the D&I team, that's ok, cause people should be happy with what they are doing. Retiring from the D&I team (or any team) is okay!
- D&I: This is still really new work in the scope of history, especially in the software & tech setting
- draining work
- resources may not be there, or not known how to use
- self care is important
- It would be great to have check ins
- Main goal would be to stay connected and provide support
- Casual D&I meetups, maybe monthly?
- Linux foundation orientation: https://training.linuxfoundation.org/training/inclusive-open-source-community-orientation-lfc102/
- Badge award (when you complete) : https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/inclusive-open-source-community-orientation
* People have personal ties to Fedora and why it is important to them. Why do you Fedora?
* Brings confidence
* It is always there, through good times and bad
* Friendship, fellowship
### D&I Team History
- Starting with a D&I rep to the council
- Realized there was interest, people wanted to help, didn't have to be just one person.
- Diversity panel
- talked about experiences
- some adversity at the panel
* FWD was one of the first things to be worked on
* FWD is exciting bc it happens all over the world, fosters inclusion.
* Started in the second year, with a couple locations
* Third year, FWD was very successful
* Decentralized way to empower communities.
* FWD was a huge success for the D&I team.
* FWD 2020 virtual was a success, but it was mostly on Marie to organzie
* This team was always volunteer driven (no full time Fedorans)
* When curveballs hit, things fell off the track
* Council D&I rep was more work than is visible
* Still need a chair for the D&I meeting or team lead
* Organization and project management has not been ideal
* Looking for support from the Council/external sources
* Help to prioritize things
* Help with strategy/direction
### What did we learn?
* Burnout
* Self care as well as maintaining the health of the team as a whole is important
* Sustainability = onboarding new folks was lacking
* Being connected is important. We are a community, not just busy bees!
* It is hard to pick up doing things quickly if we are not feeling connected.
* We would like to start monthly informal meet-ups where we get together and hang out, not just work on Fedora
* Fedora Social Hours
* Demographics and conversation topics are not always balanced
* We could have informal team chats, plan to visit a social hour as a team?
* Fedora Social Hour (https://riot.im/app/#/room/#fedora-social-hour:matrix.org)
* Newcomers/onboarding
* Need to have easy fix tasks
* Things for newcomers to get involved easily, right now it is hard to discern what to do when interested in the D&I team.
* Question of language barrier, English is not everyone's first language
* Too many tasks to choose from, hard to decipher where to start
* People experience choice paralysis because fedora is huge
* Created a limited number of tasks for newcomers to choose from
### What did we do well?
- Mentoring interns (mostly as individuals, but there is a lot of overlap)
- Fedora Women's Day
- 6 six years running
- Participation across four continents
- Outreachy
- Sponsoring Outreachy internships from D&I budget allocation
- Coordinating and supporting
- Happiness Packets
- Fedora Appreciation Week
- Friendship & support to each other
- Representation
- We've seen an increase in participation of women at Flock
- Unconscious bias & imposter syndrome sessions
## Session: D&I team: Goals, focus, future
### Intro / kick-off
* Marie is here to help run meetings and support with project management
* Justin is stepping down as D&I rep, to be replaced by Vipul
### What would we like to see:
* More of the coding folks involved
* Exposure to a broader swathe of Fedora
* How can we involved the rest of the community?
* I feel events and advocacy reach out more, to let folks know that we are here
* events to include and welcome more folks
* I think the mentorship role in our team could be better aligned with Join SIG/ambassador mentor role
* Something could be included in the new Join tickets
* Hybrid events moving forward
* Team focuses mostly on virtual events, folks can also do local events
* Matrix/Element will also be improved
* How can we capitalize on the new chat system?
* Events
* Social
* Video and Audio
* Integration into other platforms
* Articles/events/content that address mental health/marginalized folks/empowering & encouraging folks & underrepresented people
* More docs (D&I) on how to continue contributing to (D&I and Fedora in general)
### How do folks feel about going into other parts of Fedora?
* Nervous
* Scary (We're human as well ? :)
* More Fedora-social and "off-topic talks"
* Anxiety (am I gonna fail or am I doing something wrong?)
### Conclusion
* It is important for us to stay focused as a team.
* We need to prioritize.
* Tackle limited things at a time to achieve progress.
* Use our current infrastructure as best we can
* Categories of improvement/work
* Docs (D&I doc) (1)
* Think more strategically, what do we want to put up here?
* What do we do ?
* How to start ("fedora-join links ?")
* How to help ?
* How to contiune to help? (Pointing to "fedora-join ?")
* Promotion/Marketing/Content (2)
* Events (3)
* Outreach/Support/Resource Library (4)
## Session: Future of FWD
### FWD -> FWD Proposal
* Should include FWD local/virtually
* 2 Time zone event (EU/US) if it is become too bigger so we an comfort everyone as well.
* In person events could happen that week, and at the end their could be a virtual event
* do local events, and then come back and connect with the community
* Think about how to get techy people involved in the event
* Let's think about intersectionality, how can we feature that, how can we engage in a technical/creative community
* Can this be a longer term process? Involving folks in activites beforehand, after
* We can include other "days"
* BIPoC
* Pride
* We have not had the representation to accurately plan something like this
### Outcomes (vision)
* Networking
* This has been invaluable in the past
* Connection between Fedorans
* A welcoming beginning for newcomers
* Involving the broader Fedora community in the event
* Inspiration
* Brings hope to hear about other folks' journeys: victories & challenges.
### Ideas for Themes
* Could be a week of creation
* Diversity hackathon
* Could be a week where we have a session a day with a guest speaker sharing information/experiences related to D&I
* Fedora Stories: Building on contributor stories? We never found a permanent home for that.
* https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/contributor-stories/
* FWD/D&I in podcast and make talks (non-tech stuff)
* Fedora Zine takeover or make a bunch of pages in the zine
* https://processing.org/examples/
* intersection of tech & crafting
* Mixing the idea of building diversity themed tech/craft projects
* Featured during the virtual component. Tyis could be a great way to get people to network and engage with one another.
* Can help with education & incorporating & storytelling.
#action Marie to move this to a ticket

### Notes
Storytelling adds value to objects
- Picasso was damaged & fixed, and gained value
- Objects sold on ebay with vs without descriptions sold for much higher costs
### Storytelling Structure
Engagement
- Engage folks at the beginning by asking a question/interaction, you can use the question to guide peoples mindset
- Most times you want folks to "do" something
- Commenting on how folks are engaging can show you are paying attention
- Provide an interesting fact to get people hooked
Story
- What facts/details do you need to tell the story?
- minimum info needed
- Context to bring folks to the reveal
Mind = Blown
- Drop some amazing knowledge, change someone's perspective
- People pay attention to superlatives.. it doesn't have to be unique
Connection
- Draw us in on a personal level, engage with the storyteller
- Can help us understand the speaker
- By sharing or being vulnerable with info, you can foster that atmosphere with your audience
Drop the mic
- End your story very clearly
- how do you wrap it up
- Takeaway phrase

##### Topic 2
Fedora D&I charter. What have we historically done, what do we do now, what do we want to see in the future?
##### Topic 3
FWD->FWD. Proposal: 'Fedora Women's Day' -> Fedora Week of Diversity.
Let's talk about what moving Women's day to Week of Diversity would look like and make up a mock outline for the event.

#### Moderation
There are a limited number of things we can do with the platform, but luckily we have a really great community. There is always a chance that people will stir up trouble or speak before thinking. There is also the possibility of spammers or random outsiders creating issues. Sometimes with these kinds of events, there could be some targeting. Fortunately, we are all well versed in chat room situations. Feel empowered to ask others to act kindly. If you are uncertain how to proceed, don't hesitate to DM Marie Nordin or any of the event organizers.
**For those who will have organizer access during the event:**
First offense:
* "@person please remember to abide by the Fedora Code of Conduct. Your (example: profuse inappropriate language) is not tolerated in our community."
Second offense:
* "@person this is a warning. If you are unable to abide by the Fedora CoC, we will have to remove you from the event."
Third offense:
* Remove them from the event
Using best judgement:
- Delete individual messages in the group chats if inappropriate.
- Removing people from the event is our most extreme option (unless an individual commits a crime).
