# How to Reset Your Username and Password on a Linksys Wireless Router
If you have a Wi-Fi service running at your workplace, it's important to secure the connection. At the very least, your customers shouldn't be able to access your Linksys router settings and mess around with setup. If you suspect that your Linksys login has been compromised, you can do one of two things: change the username and password on the router, or reset it to its default settings.
## Change Linksys login username and password
Log into your Linksys router, which is easy to do through the web interface that allows you to talk to your router. All you have to do is type the following in your browser's address bar: http://192.168.1.1. If you are still using the default Linksys username and default Linksys password, leave the "Username" field blank and type "admin" in the "Password" field.
After gaining access to the interface, go to the "Administration" tab and the "Management" subpage, where you will see the username and password you are currently using. Change both entries to something that's easy for you to remember but hard for others to figure out. When you're done, click the "Save Settings" button.
## Restore default settings
To restore your router to its default settings, locate the reset button on the router. It is recessed into a small hole to prevent accidental resets. To press it in, use a paper clip, pen, or other small, pointed object. It can be in different places depending on the model of router you have. On some routers the reset button is on the back, while on others it is on the bottom.
Insert the clip and hold the button down for about 30 seconds. As you hold down the reset button, a light should begin to blink continuously. Release the reset button and unplug the router from the wall. Wait another 30 seconds before plugging it back in.
new login
Connect your computer to the router using an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi connection, and log in to the Linksys router interface using the default username and password. At this point, all your settings are erased. Reconfigure the wireless network and configure a new set of login details.
**tips**
Although you can access your router's interface via Wi-Fi, please access it via an Ethernet connection for added security. You can also perform a factory reset through the web interface. Find "Factory Defaults" under the "Management" tab. Click on it to restore factory settings.
## How to recover the Linksys router password
A Linksys router is used to connect a network of computers to establish a connection to a network or the Internet. If you use a Linksys router to connect to your home network or the network within an organization, there are several steps you can take to recover a Linksys router password in case you have forgotten or lost it.
**Linksys Router Password Recovery**
Here are some steps you can take to regain use of your Linksys router in the event of a lost password.
Restore Default Settings – If you are unable to recover your password, it is possible to restore the Linksys router default settings that were on your router when it left the manufacturer. You can do this by pressing the reset button on the unit and holding it down for at least 30 seconds. This will configure the unit so that you can reconfigure the system. If the reset does not occur, repeat the process of holding the button down.
Login: Once your router is reset, you need to log in to configure the settings. Once you are logged in, you need to connect one of your PCs to the Ethernet port on the Linksys router and then proceed to connect and access the URL http://192.168.1.1 which will ask you to enter a username and password. At this point, you will use the default username and password provided with your router at the time of purchase. If you are unsure of the default information, please refer to the user manual for your Linksys router.
**Reconfigure: Once you have logged in, proceed to reconfigure the system and set a new username and password.
protect your password**
Once you have reconfigured the router and established your new username and password, take steps to protect your password by keeping a printed version in a safe place where no one can access it. If you need to manage a series of Linksys router passwords, keep a copy of the codes, as well as the username and passwords in a safe place. It's also a good idea to save a copy of the settings you use in case you need to use them again.
Be sure to create a password or a series of passwords (if you are using more than one router) that are difficult for someone to guess. Passwords that are too easy to remember can also create problems when you use a password management system.
