Team announcements & news

  • New Fedora Project Leader Jef Spaleta
  • End of OpenID authentication in Fedora Account System
    • https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/end-of-openid-authentication-in-fedora-account-system/
    • On the latest Fedora Infrastructure weekly meeting we decided on a date of OpenID authentication sunset. The date is 20th May 2025. The OpenID is being replaced by OpenIDConnect (OIDC) in most of the modern web and most of the Fedora infrastructure is already using OIDC as the default authentication method. OIDC offers us better security by handling both authentication and authorization. It also allows us to have more control over services that are using Fedora Account System (FAS) for authentication.
  • Proposal to move Community Blog to Fedora Discussion
  • Flock is coming: 5-8 June 2025, Prague CZ
    • https://fedoraproject.org/flock/2025/
    • The annual Fedora contributor conference, Flock, is open for registration. The final event schedule is due very soon. We hope you could consider joining us in Prague this year if it is possible for you. If you need help with travel advice or getting to know more info about the event, join #flock:fedoraproject.org on Matrix.

Ticket-driven discussion & notes

  • Fedora Mentor Summit
  • Outreachy applicant Q&A
    • We used the second-half of the call to answer various questions from applicants!
    • Don't forget to spend time on your portfolios and use this as a chance to showcase your contributions and efforts over the last month.
    • Be wary about using AI for your contributions. Unfortunately, it is a lot easier to make bad contributions with AI than good contributions. Consider avoiding the use of AI, or use it as minimally as possible. We want to get to know you, and it is not a goal to make every contribution perfect!

    • The purpose of this study is to gather thoughts and experiences about diversity and inclusion in Open Source Community Leadership. Participants will be shown different widgets to pick from. This will help create a design for a tool to help Open Source community members make smart choices when selecting leaders or board members.

    • A group of Fedora contributors and Ambassadors in India are helping co-organize GNOME Asia at the Red Hat office in Bengaluru. Following our Flock 2024 workshop, this aligns with our goals of supporting more regional events and diverse communities beyond the typical Eurocentric focus of our flagship events.

    • How could we better support our DEI and regional communities in 2025?
    • What might we focus on at the Flock hackfest?
    • !idea Local meetups as a starting point. Should they be Fedora-specific, or something more general? For example, open source meetup, a programming language meetup, a Linux meetup, etc.
    • !idea Using major regional events as gathering point of local community members. For #region-africa-west:fedoraproject.org, this could be OSCA Festival. For #region-saarc:fedoraproject.org, this could be GNOME Asia.
    • !idea We can leverage existing connections with local leaders and event organizers to help us coordinate a presence on the ground at these events.
    • !idea Extending the Fedora Ambassador program to West Africa. What does a regional mentor look like in 2024? What does a mentor do? What are their responsibilities? How can the DEI Team support regional mentors?

Follow-ups from last meeting

  • 🟠 AI: @ekidney Create new featured image for DEI Team quarterly updates

Ticket-driven discussion & notes

Q2: https://gitlab.com/fedora/dei/home/-/milestones/5
Q3: https://gitlab.com/fedora/dei/home/-/milestones/6

  • End-of-quarter retrospective
  • Future goals for Q3?
    • We spent a lot of time on events this quarter, which is one half of our project charter. We have done great work!
    • But the part about DEI communities has not gotten as much work and effort. Brainstorming on how we could do this better?
  • DEI policy for Flock location: https://gitlab.com/fedora/dei/home/-/issues/34. We reviewed the recent changes made by @misc and looked at the timeline for making this policy a reality. Here are the key takeaways:
    • Proposed to consolidate the two policies (event location and event location policy change policy) into a single document.
      • The parts of the policy change policy that do not fit into the Council Policy Change Policy can become guidelines or recommendations within the proposed event location policy.
      • This avoids the inherent implication of converting the DEI Team into a policy-making group, which as of today, we are not and do not have any official charge to do so, other than via the DEI Advisor representative to the Fedora Council. By directing this policy to the Council instead of the DEI Team, we lean into the existing structure and avoid opening a new discussion about whether the DEI Team has the authority to mandate project-wide policy.
    • I felt that some of the criteria evaluation could be more clear for non-native English speakers, e.g. "Hierarchy of Norms" and "Temporality" may be difficult terms to understand even for native English speakers. If we cannot think of something else, we could brainstorm in a future call.
    • Our goal is to revisit the policy discussion asynchronously throughout July, and aim to have a final draft ready by our next A/V meeting on Thursday, August 1st. Then, we will review and see if we are ready to propose this as a new policy to the Fedora Council.
