MediaTek's IoT Chipset Portfolio: What Enterprise Teams Need to Know

Choosing the wrong chipset early in a product development cycle is an expensive mistake which would often mean redesigned boards, delayed timelines, and budget overruns. So when evaluating chipsets for enterprise IoT solutions, the question goes beyond just performance. Instead, it's about longevity, software support, connectivity options, and whether the platform can actually scale with your product roadmap.
![Mediatek iot product](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/rySS1zRabe.png)
When it comes to connectivity, longevity, and software support, MediaTek has built one of the more comprehensive IoT chipset portfolios in the industry. And a lot has changed across its MediaTek IoT applications and hardware offerings in recent years. Let's take a closer look.

The Genio Family

MediaTek's Genio platform is designed around a single standard hardware architecture that supports multiple applications. This is especially important for enterprise teams managing more than one product line. Rather than rebuilding a hardware foundation every time you move upmarket or downmarket, Genio comes with the advantage of moving across tiers with far less friction.
![genio (1)](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/BkhY1zRTZg.png)
The current Genio lineup spans three main platforms: the Genio Pro for premium, high-performance IoT deployments; the Genio 420 for mid-range applications; and the Genio 360, which targets smart home, retail, industrial, and commercial IoT use cases. MediaTek's Genio portfolio also includes the Genio 1200 and Genio 700, both high-performance edge AI platforms that continue to power a wide range of enterprise IoT solutions and industrial deployments.

While the Genio 1200 targets more demanding AI and multimedia workloads, the Genio 700 offers a more power-efficient and cost-optimized alternative. This makes it one of the stronger low power IoT chipset solutions available for teams building scalable connected products.

The Genio Pro is MediaTek's flagship for high-performance IoT and embedded offerings. And it enables OEMs to develop autonomous mobile robots, commercial drones, edge AI devices, and transportation and logistics platforms.

It integrates an Arm v9.2 configuration with one Arm Cortex-X925, three Cortex-X4, and four Cortex-A720 cores, and supports up to 260K DMIPS of compute performance. And it's this performance that earned it a Best-in-Show award at Embedded World 2026.

10-Year Longevity Commitment

When it comes to sourcing IoT hardware for enterprise devices, the journey doesn't end in procurement. In fact, it's just the beginning, especially in a world where products stay in the field for a decade or more.
![10 Years Mediatek (1)](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/B1OfezATWe.png)
MediaTek addresses this directly with a 10-year longevity program for Genio SoCs. And it doesn't end there. MediaTek IoT platforms also come with guaranteed operating temperature support and long-term OS and security patch coverage.

For instance, the Genio 520 was released in Q2 2025 with an expected end-of-life date of 2035. Naturally, this kind of commitment changes the risk calculus.

5G and 4G Modem IoT

Not every enterprise deployment may have reliable Wi-Fi infrastructure, especially in places with older infrastructure that instead relies on cellular connectivity. MediaTek's modem-based IoT portfolio covers 4G and 5G connectivity for industrial, enterprise, and embedded applications, with a focus on deployment stability, security, and scalability.

This silicon giant also works with ODM and module vendors to help customers bring connected products to market without building cellular expertise from scratch internally.

Developer Support and Documentation

For any team starting work on new hardware, access to clear and reliable documentation makes all the difference. This is true whether you are working on MediaTek’s Wi-Fi IoT implementations or broader MediaTek IoT development projects that span multiple connectivity layers.

MediaTek has invested considerably in this area through the Genio Developer Center. The dedicated developer site has technical documentation, board support packages, SDK resources, and OS build guides, and is also the centralized entry point for evaluating, developing, and deploying AI workloads on MediaTek IoT devices.

It is worth noting that MediaTek Genio OS support spans Android, Yocto Linux, and Ubuntu, giving you a wide range of environments to work with. Beyond documentation, MediaTek works with a network of design service partners and ODMs globally, so teams that need hands-on implementation support have established channels to tap into rather than starting from scratch.

Edge AI Is Now Baked In

Perhaps the biggest shift in MediaTek's IoT story over the past two years is the integration of on-device AI across the Genio lineup. This approach brings multimedia capabilities developed through years of smartphone and smart TV leadership into IoT devices.
![mediatek.. (1)](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/H1D4xMA6Zl.png)
This matters because it reduces the need for external AI accelerators in devices like IoT solutions for smart retail — think interactive kiosks, digital signage, and AI-powered checkout terminals — as well as video conferencing hardware, simplifying the overall BOM considerably.

It's worth noting that MediaTek has also partnered with NVIDIA on the TAO toolkit for AI applications. This is designed to integrate into select IoT platforms, proving useful for teams already working within the NVIDIA AI ecosystem.

What MediaTek IoT Means for Your Next Design Decision

In hindsight, MediaTek's IoT portfolio isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. But it covers more ground than most teams initially expect. So, whether you are building edge AI hardware, designing enterprise access points, or sourcing IoT hardware for enterprise devices across a connected retail deployment, the Genio range offers solid options backed by long-term support commitments that enterprise procurement teams can actually plan around.

1.
