    # Proxy Protocol Selector: When to Use HTTP, SOCKS5, or Shadowsocks in BitBrowser ![Proxy Protocol Selector](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/SJS6MMd6Wg.png) Choosing the wrong proxy protocol is one of the most common mistakes in multi-account management. You can have the best residential proxies on the market, a perfectly configured antidetect browser, and a clean workflow — and still get flagged because the protocol you chose does not match the task. This guide breaks down the three protocols you will encounter most in BitBrowser — HTTP, SOCKS5, and Shadowsocks — explains how each works at the network level, and gives you a clear decision framework for matching protocol to use case. ## What a Proxy Protocol Actually Does A proxy sits between your browser and the destination server, forwarding requests under a different IP address. The *protocol* defines how your browser communicates with that proxy — the handshake format, what traffic types it can carry, and how it handles authentication and encryption. The choice of protocol affects three things directly: - **Compatibility** — what types of traffic the proxy can handle - **Detection resistance** — how visible the proxy connection is to the destination platform - **Performance** — latency and throughput under real browsing conditions ## HTTP Proxy ### How It Works HTTP proxies operate at the application layer (Layer 7 of the OSI model). When your browser sends a request, it goes to the proxy first, which reads the full HTTP headers — including the destination URL, method, and any cookies — and then forwards the request to the target server. For HTTPS traffic, HTTP proxies use a mechanism called CONNECT tunneling. The browser sends a CONNECT request to the proxy, the proxy establishes a TCP tunnel to the destination, and encrypted HTTPS traffic flows through that tunnel without the proxy being able to read it. ### Strengths - **Universal compatibility** — every platform, browser, and tool supports HTTP proxies - **Simple setup** — no additional configuration beyond host, port, and credentials - **Easy to debug** — HTTP headers are readable at the proxy level, making troubleshooting straightforward - **Low overhead** — minimal processing adds negligible latency for standard web browsing ### Weaknesses - **Protocol-limited** — handles HTTP and HTTPS only; WebSockets over raw TCP and some streaming protocols may not work correctly - **Header injection risk** — some platforms inspect headers like `X-Forwarded-For` or `Via`, which HTTP proxies can expose unless the provider strips them - **No proxy connection encryption** — the tunnel between your machine and the proxy server is unencrypted ### When to Use HTTP in BitBrowser HTTP is the right choice for standard web browsing tasks where the target platform uses conventional HTTPS — which covers the vast majority of e-commerce platforms, social media sites, and affiliate networks. If you are managing seller accounts on Amazon, Shopee, Lazada, or eBay, or running ad accounts on Facebook and Google, HTTP proxies will work reliably and with the least configuration overhead. In BitBrowser, you assign HTTP proxies directly in the profile's proxy settings. SOCKS5 also supports UDP, which HTTP proxies cannot handle at all. ### Strengths - **Protocol-agnostic** — handles HTTP, HTTPS, WebSockets, FTP, and any other TCP or UDP traffic - **No header injection** — SOCKS5 does not read application-layer content, so it cannot accidentally add proxy-identifying headers - **Better for automation** — scrapers and tools with non-HTTP connections are more reliable on SOCKS5 - **UDP support** — required for some DNS resolution methods and real-time protocols - **Authentication built in** — username/password auth is part of the SOCKS5 spec ### Weaknesses - **Slightly higher setup complexity** — not every application supports SOCKS5 natively; some require a local wrapper - **No encryption of the proxy connection** — like HTTP, the channel between your machine and the proxy server is unencrypted by default ### When to Use SOCKS5 in BitBrowser SOCKS5 is the recommended protocol for most serious multi-account work in BitBrowser for several reasons. First, it handles all traffic types, so you never hit compatibility issues with WebSocket-heavy platforms or apps that use non-standard connections. Second, the absence of header injection makes it inherently cleaner from a detection standpoint. Use SOCKS5 when you are running browser automation alongside manual sessions, when your target platforms use WebSocket connections (many modern web apps do), or when you are operating in environments where even small detection signals matter — such as crypto exchange accounts, ad accounts, or any account where fingerprinting is known to be aggressive.
