### 12/19/2022
Should we make a Mastodon group account? Twitter is a mess and many scientists are leaving. EEB dept is on ecoevo.social https://fosstodon.org/@UofAEEB@ecoevo.social. fediscience.org is probably a good fit for us.
### 12/12/2022
- Dates for Q1
1. February 1: basic regex (with a followup on regex/string manipulation in R)
2. Feb 22: Multivariate Statistics: Using the Right Tool for the Job
3. March 29: Combining datasets using 'dplyr' (inspired by [DC "putting it together"](https://www.michaelc-m.com/Rewrite-R-ecology-lesson/04-putting-it-together.html)), demo of [non-equi joins](https://www.tidyverse.org/blog/2022/11/dplyr-1-1-0-is-coming-soon/#non-equi-joins) from dplyr 1.1.0, pre-req of familiarity with R and dplyr, provide link to DC materials
- Workshops blurbs
- regex
- New workshop page cards:
- All workshop wednesday cards created
- Still need to convert series and other workshops to event cards
- New Workshops page notes:
- "drop in hours" shouldn't be in upcoming workshops
-

### 10/31/2022
- Kristina
- Fall workshop series
- Publish ARDN post
- all talks https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_8uALA03ZsV6Io6EMcDPTaXPAhpAEDFZ
- all data on Ag data commons: https://data.nal.usda.gov/ARDN
- David
- more projects --> cards
- (finished PEG)
- Eric
- Publications page
#### Publications page options:
1. Link to group google scholar page from menu bar item
- E.g.: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=HWhxBY4AAAAJ&hl=en
- Pros: track citation metrics, easy to find and add papers
- Cons: another thing to update, visually uninteresting
2. Link to a Zotero library from menu bar item
- E.g.: https://www.zotero.org/groups/4775341/plant_phenology/items
- Pros: easy for us to add papers. People could subscribe to our library through Zotero (not sure why they'd want to though).
- Cons: another thing to update, visually uninteresting
3. Use "Publications" content type
- E.g.: https://datascience.cals.arizona.edu/publication/brapi-application-programming-interface-plant-breeding-applications (imagine these on a single page like the new incubator page)
- Pros: potential to be visually interesting
- Cons: Probably need Hannah to create a new "view" for the content type "Publication". "Publication" content type probably also needs editing. The website is annoying to edit.
I think we need to decide if this needs to be just a list of publications or something more annotated (e.g. https://terraref.org/news/publications). If it just needs to be a list, then setting up a Google Scholar page for the group is probably best.
### 10/24/2022

- [x] Discussion topic: do "workshops" require hands on work?
- workshops should have some active learning component
- participants have expectation
- do something, ask participants to do something similar, but slightly different
- ask questions
- formula
- background
- some on your own getting a little comfortable w/ basic thinking
- more advanced stuff
- Eric:
- do a tweet about october workshop
- also one from prev. workshop?
### 9/26/2022
- Report back on website work by Hannah Fournier from Jessica; [incubator project spreadsheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bFvmF1vgbqzZm-gFif6pyvFWzhbYsiPQ1UGZLRxLuV8/edit#gid=0) info being pushed to website page
- Choosing format for incubator summaries
- Chris: Send out next Drone Discussion Group email
- Eric: worked on re-writing incubator description
- Eric: I put a "help" sign on a table in gather.town. Not sure if that's an improvment
Notes on what makes a good incubator summary:
Eric's fav:
> A recent wildfire that burned a rangeland restoration experiment offered the opportunity to test whether restoration techniques to reduce cheatgrass held up following an additional disturbance. We developed Bayesian models to analyze plant height, cover, and count data using appropriate likelihoods and accounted for the complex ANOVA design with random effects.
- starts with problem (but no "our collaborators approached us with ..." or "we created a shiny app...")
- ends with outcome
- just enough info that someone who wanted to learn more would click through to a longer README
- Maybe include just name of main UA collaborator
### 9/19/2022
- [x] (Eric) Add pull request template to CALS-workshop repo for workshop checklist
- Eric: worked on incubator projects website spreadsheet a little
### 9/12/2022

(dsl update 08-01-2022): created epic https://github.com/cct-datascience/organization/issues/1006 and a new issues to cover these and other proposed changes)
Ideas for re-structuring website to emphasize our services to UA. Consistent with our audience being primarily UA researchers who would take our workshops and apply for incubator proposals.
- Put incubators up front on website
- Move "Research Support" tab to home page
- Rely less on listing our expertise (e.g. "Data Analysis" card) and more on showing examples of past projects
- New tab for workshops (instead of card on "Research Support" page)
- New tab for incubators (new page)
- New incubators page:
- About
- Cards for data anlysis, data managment, visualization, modeling
- Link to proposal instructions
- Links to completed incubators (e.g. a blogroll of posts tagged "incubator")
- New tabs: Home, People, Incubators, Workshops, Projects, Blog, Contact

Emails: arutherford@email.arizona.edu, iav@arizona.edu, mkbusby@arizona.edu, bresette@email.arizona.edu
Dear Austin, Isabella, Kathryn, and William,
Some of you already know about DIAG Office Hours (the official announcement was in the ALVSCE weekly bulletin yesterday), but we want to specifically let all four of you know about this:
https://datascience.cals.arizona.edu/office-hours
Please consider this a standing invitation to DIAG Office Hours ('co-located' with ResBaz Coffee&Code). Feel free to use it as an informal venue to hang out with us, and with each other. Send the information to any CALS researchers who have data science and engineering questions.
We are very excited to work directly with researchers in CALS on data science challenges. You four are the front-line data science enablers in CALS. As such we want to collaborate with you, and help you make an impact in your own missions as well.
We hope to have many interesting conversations with you over the coming months, and to hear your suggestions to improve this office hours effort, as well as other ways to further data intensive research in CALS.
All the best,
Dr David LeBauer, Director of Data Science at CALS

#### Email to Matt Rahr about Office Hours
Hi Matt,
Our group (DIAG) is adding regular office hours to our outreach efforts. Could you please send out an announcement to your CALS mailing list to help us spread the word?

### 6/19/2020
Meeting with Caroline Mosley about marketing/communications
#### Notes
Intro:
* Went over what we have (website, blog post, Twitter); only have audience defined somewhat for the first thing
* What is our goal? Find/communicate with collaborators, measure outreach impact
* Okay to start slowly and build
Twitter:
* Social media is a distribution method (get the word out). Need to follow/find the right people/groups and use the right hashtags and accounts to tag.
* "Right" accounts = similar groups and people.
* Consistency with Twitter: have one person in charge at time and keep a log.
* Quote retweets are better than just retweeting.
* What is the goal for Twitter? Narrow the scope and do that for a while, then can try something else.
* Stuff on our website won't be seen unless we put it out there.
* How to decide where to draw the line with who to follow, what to post, etc. Fine to start narrowly.
* Brief guidelines from UA on social media use.
Logo:
* Can get added to [official directory](https://social.arizona.edu/social-directory) possibly?
* Don't use A logo unless UA approves; it's okay to use our own
Website:
* Include key words on site so when people search for them the site comes up
* Make it super obvious and simple.
* Add "For Collaborators" section?
* Lots of white space and images
* Group everything into themes/tags
* Minimal maintenance
* This needs to be more obvious: services/products for scientists; enable others to do their work; "we want to help you do your science"
* See [Services tab](https://datascience.cals.arizona.edu/services-overview) on old website
* Core services (instead doing consulting type work through CCT)
University resources:
* Outside creative agencies to hire someone ($$$)
* Biocommunications group?
* Not much on campus that would be useful
* [Forge](https://forge.arizona.edu/home) = UA entrepreneurial org
* Tech launch = more about tech products
### 6/12/2020
* Three products: Twitter thread -> blog post -> OSF page
* Content = resources and action items/TODOs
* Audience!
* Others at University of Arizona
* Other primarily white academic groups?
* Set up meeting with Caroline to learn about about public relations/communications methods
1. What is our communication goal for the organization?
2. How do we find our audience?
3. What media do we use for communications?
4. What is the "brand"
5. How do we use google analytics to inform our decisions?
* Ex. Who's visiting the DIAG blog? Where are they coming from?
* Ask CCT to pull analytic data for us to look at for next week
- Emily
