# BIDS Town Halls 2025
It's called "Halls" with the plural "s" because there's the in-person one at OHBM OSR first, then later there will be the fully virtual town hall.
## Virtual Town Hall July 16 11am ET
on OSSIG Crowdcast
Attendees: 29 (39 less ~10 from BIDS Maint/Steering/OSSIG)
### Notes summarizing the TownHall discussion:
Audience questions:
Lea Waller:
What is the process for contributing/providing feedback for a BEP? How detailed do comments need to be?
- Need to confirm that 'where to comment on beps depending on which stage they are in' is documented on website.
Robert Oostenveld:
What would the BIDS maintainers like the community members to do more or to do differently?
a) BEP leads please reach out when you're stuck - Maintainers are also clarifying docs / steps around this.
b) more maintainers please
c) Atlases, BIDS 2.0, Provenance, other big BIDS efforts could use help - volunteers wanted
d) Maintainers will reflet on this and get back to the community
Hugo Boniface:
You mentioned BIDS 2.0, but I haven't gathered any information about it yet. Will BIDS 1.X datasets be completely incompatible with BIDS 2.0?
- Is there/do we need a public facing roadmap on the website about the development/transition to BIDS 2.0 and relationship of 1.0 to 2.0
Mark Mikkelsen:
There is an EU-based initiative for improving the sharing of neuroimaging data (https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA24161/). Although it's EU-focused, I know BIDS will make a significant contribution to it. I just wanted to share it with others.
Answer: Camille, Cyril, Guio, Robert are joint
Guiomar Niso:
Do you have any estimation of BIDS adoption? (number of institutions)
- How best to track which institutions have adopted BIDS - important for grants, impact page on website.
- Cursory look at dataset_description.json files on OpenNeuro shows only a couple explicitly mention an institution. Would need to cross reference authors with institution, or contact OpenNeuro team about using ORCID institution data (contingent on if sharing that data is acceptable).
Cyril:
I'll be at EBRAINS meting -- let me know if we 'BIDS' wants to have a poster or something
- BIDS Help Desk
Guiomar Niso:
How is the relation with journals going?
- Kim: Ariel following up, may be stalled, Sci Data / Imaging NeuroSci, Steering will revisit
- There was an idea to create a checklist for journals regarding dataset compliance.
- Steering to followup to decide how to proceed/ where to post call for community input on this, Maintainers to support
- https://apertureneuro.org/for-authors mentions BIDS and uses eCOBIDAS for use as a checklist.
### Followups:
- download recording, trim it(?)
- find a place to host/publish it
- tidy, review, circulate (to steering) the summary notes ERIC -- @YQPx2xuzS-yqaCkzr3VWDQ
- publish the summary discussion notes
### Thoughts for next time (updates we missed)
- Bids steering email, Yahya's late breaking NeurIPs update, Upcoming events (come see us at INCF assembly), Maintainer asks from the community
## OHBM OSR ~3pm PDT June 24
recording here: https://www.crowdcast.io/c/osr-round-table-1
Actually started at ~315pm PDT
### 1st speaker: ??? (McGill University - The Neuro) - In-person
- Gabriel Pelletier mentioned Open Science Prizes from McGill - The Neuro
- [Link](https://www.mcgill.ca/neuro/open-science/open-science-awards-and-prizes/neuro-irv-and-helga-cooper-foundation-open-science-prizes)

### 2nd Speaker: Russ Poldrack (in-person)

### 3rd Speaker: Vijay Iyer (MathWorks)
No screenshots grabbed.
### 4th Speaker: Yarik Halchenko (BIDS Steering Group)
Go, Yarik, go!

- Q1:
A1: "BIDS future is glorious" ~Yarik
- Q2:
A2: Cross-standard collaborations (DICOM, NWB, HED)
- Q3: Something about 2-photon imaging
A3: Microscopy is in BIDS
- Q4: (Franco Pestilli, maybe JB Poline too?, and Russ Poldrack) Silo'ed, need "indoctrination". Help build the mindset of open science within the field.
A4:
- Q5: Microscopy question, something about "AMARO": AMARO won't budge
A5: Satra Ghosh said, "all tool chains and tool kits should move forward together" Cross-community collaboration needed.
- Q6: (Franco Pestilli) Reach out to Satra and Franco to help with standardizing to BIDS from OME-ZARR
(approximately an hour of discussion about the OSR's future)
