COSCUP. annual conf. promoting open source. 12 year history. 2000 ppl. all volunteers. pycon. communities are NOT legal entities. will need to borrow company bank accounts. 2012 = g0v start. 2014 = ppl feel they need legal entity. if you start company, you only have one relationship with gov. need to be nonprofit in order for gov convos to stay open. 0rg. zero-rg. hackpad. fundraise $5M tw dollars. 1 wk. conferences gave half extra funding to org. supported by not only g0v but open source conference organizing community. act as legal entity for all these comnunities. virtually. org doesn't interfere with how ppl want to spend. as long as legal and invoice, just give money. hire staff core team. 2.5 ppl working on that. 20 different community projects. file invoice. when donations happen, give receipts. file taxes. accountant every 2 months. public release community donation. who donated how much. have a website for online fundraising for all the communities. members can donate. OCF core service is running logistics. * @ttcat joined later. runs logistics for g0v community. civic tech grant or hackathon. hiring for more international networking. hiring, in fact. started digital rights project under networking perview. start collaboration projets. g0v.news. main purpose is under international networking. * another part of job is hackathon organizer for g0v. half time on running bimonthly. jothon. "join hackathon". not a tech force. jothon is a small thing only for organizing hackathons. small thing for organizers. no trello board or record of meetings at first. hired 0.5 staff to help run logistics. now more staff, other cofounders. 5 or 6 ppl. regular meeting every tues standup, and every friday, cowork in OCF office. * logistics: write scripts for repeating tasks. one script for initiating event. small talk in afternoon, everyone gets 8 min and 5 slots. save all energy for summit every 2 years. * hackathon. missing one is 4 months. * g0v just trying to run a community, doesn't need to have "success" -- removing that. task assignment is a bad road. it's too much like working. forgiveness. big big projects do happen. structure follows.
