# Reminders for The Bonehunters
___
## Characters
This won't cover characters we've come to know and love over multiple books -- I hope you remember Cotillion and Quick Ben, for instance -- but The Bonehunters introduces several new characters and breathes new life into some returning characters. In fact, The Bonehunters is the point in the series where the cast seriously blows up in scope. This is a guide to those secondary actors that might have slipped your mind and a few new to this book.
### Deities
* **Queen of Dreams:** T'riss, goddess of divination and Queen of High House Life.
* **Poliel:** Goddess of plague, Mistress of Pestilience.
* **Soliel:** Goddess, sister to Poliel, Mistress of Healing.
* **D'reck:** God (or goddess), the Worm of Autumn. God of rot and decay.
* **Edgewalker:** Ancient spirit from Shadow. Occasional confidant for Cotillion. Self-proclaimed elemental force.
* **Togg and Fanderay:** The Wolves of Winter, current occupants of the Beast Throne and gods of war.
* **Stump Flit:** The Salamander God of the Mott warlocks.
### Malazans
#### Leadership
* **T'amber:** Tavore's aide and lover.
* **Blistig:** Former commander of the Aren Guard, now Fist under Tavore.
* **Keneb:** Captain that Kalam rescued in DG and sister-in-law to Minala. Now a Fist under Tavore, replacing Gamet.
* **Tene Baralta:** Commander of the Red Blades, a Malazan loyalist Seven Cities batallion. Acting Fist under Tavore.
* **Temul:** Wickan child, leader of the 14th's cavalry division (composed of surviving Wickans, Crow clan reinforcements, and Khundryl Burned Tears).
* **Nil and Nether**: The two surviving child mages from the Chain of Dogs. Twins. A shocking portion of the 14th's mage power.
* **Gall:** Leader of the Khundryl Burned Tears. Joined with the 14th after not being able to take the shame of not helping Coltaine after the Battle of Sanimon (where they declared with Wickans the greatest warriors on the continent).
* **Nok:** Admiral, the last of the old guard.
* **Topper:** Clawmaster under Laseen.
#### Soldiers of the 14th
* **Faradan Sort:** A new captain in the 14th, rumored to come from the Stormwall.
* **Kindly and Pores**: Leadership of Ashok regiment. They were captured by the Whirlwind and joined the 14th at the end of HoC. Kindly has a... reputation.
* **Smiles, Koryk, and Tarr:** Fiddler's squad, along with Bottle and Cuttle. Tarr is the corporal. Smiles likes knives. Koryk is a half-blood Seti.
* **Bottle:** Fiddler's mage. Has access to several warrens but prefers tribal magic, particularly "riding" the conciousness ("life-sparks", per Nil) of animals.
* **Cuttle:** Fiddler's sapper. He blew the bridge at Sekala Crossing in DG and was later wounded and evacuated on the Silanda before Vathar Crossing.
* **Gesler, Stormy, and Truth:** Former Coastal Marines who wound up on the Silanda and came back to Seven Cities with bronze skin. Gesler and Stormy are old guard while Truth is a young recruit. Gesler leads the squad.
* **Pella:** Former guard at Skullcup who tried to help Felisin escape. Survived the revolt and joined the 14th. In Gesler's squad.
* **Sands and Tavos Pond:** The remainder of Gesler's squad. Tavos Pond is a mage, Sands a sapper.
* **Balm, Deadsmell, Galt, Lobe, Throatslitter, and Widdershins:** A veteran squad in the 14th.
* **Cord, Crump, Ebron, Limp, and Shard:** A relatively new squad in the 14th. Formerly Ashok Regiment. Cord is sergeant with Shard as his corporal.
* **Sinn:** Cord's mage and younger sister to Shard. She's young, 15 at most. Helped Kalam infiltrate B'ridys in HoC. Creepy. Likes to take trophies.
* **Hellian:** Sergeant in the city guard in Kartool. Hates spiders. Loves drinking.
* **Urb:** Hellian's corporal.
* **Touchy and Brethless:** Twins in Hellian's squad.
* **Thom Tissy, Ramp, and Tulip:** Another squad in the 14th with Thom Tissy as sergeant.

* **Ormulogun and Gumble:** Yes, that's right, you get more of the artist and his talking toad critic.
#### Other Malazans
* **Grub:** A foundling from the Chain of Dogs. Keneb's adopted son. Has a knack for prophecy and saying (and doing) uncanny things.
* **Bent and Roach:** Wickan cattle dog and Hengese lapdog respectively. The only survivors from the last stand of the Chain of Dogs, thanks to Mappo's healing potions and Gesler's search for Duiker at the end of DG.
* **Lostara Yil:** Red Blade captain who killed Sha'ik. She and Pearl know the truth about Felisin.
* **Pearl (assassin):** Claw assassin attached to Tavore. He and Lostara tracked Felisin and witnessed Tavore killing her sister. Still not the demon Pearl from GotM.
* **Braven Tooth:** Master Sergeant and drill sergeant on Malaz Isle.

## Geography
We're back on the Seven Cities subcontinent with its various warring tribes, city-states, infighting, and vast history stretching back to the First Empire. Most of our activity takes place in the north and northwest of the subcontinent.
At the end of House of Chains, the desert Raraku flooded to become the Raraku Sea, stretching from Pan'Potsun in the east, Ehrlitan in the north, Karashimesh in the south, and Lato Revae in the west.
Leoman of the Flails and his warriors fled to the west from the oasis, towards the ancient city of Y'Ghatan. Other remnants of the Apocalypse fled in various directions.
Dujek's Host, reinforced with new recruits, lands at Ehrlitan to help put down the remnants of the rebellion. Tavore's 14th pursues Leoman, the highest ranking military commander of the Whirlwind remaining, to the west. Admiral Nok keeps his fleet available for transport of the armies and as a rapid response force to help keep coastal cities under Imperial rule.

## Note on reading
Chapter 7 is _long_. It's the fourth longest in the series, eclipsed only by the last two chapters of The Crippled God and the last chapter of Memories of Ice. Coming in the middle of the book as it does, it tends to sneak up on first time readers.
It's probably best to read it all in one go, but I know that's not actually practical. Logical breakpoints come at the words:
1. "...flinched at their terror-filled eyes, and turned round once more, for he had nothing to say to them. Nothing worth hearing."
2. "Oh, this honey, it’s Carelbarra. The God Bringer. Oh…"
