    # knit r&d: meeting notes Oct 1, 2018 * use this space for creating collaborative notes or sharing links * to begin editing, click on the the small double paned icon in the upper left * *note this text editor uses "markdown," a simple formating language for creating flexible virtual documents* to see how it works, try typing: "# heading" "## heading" "\*\*bold\*\* " "\*italics\*" a markdown reference sheet can be found here: https://www.markdownguide.org/basic-syntax ## possible topics -- positive effects of piracy -- detention facilities -- project maven # meeting notes: october 15, 2018 KNIT Meeting Notes - 10/15 computational features came from logic; humanistic ways of thinking contributing to higher-education and innovation the philosophy and pedagogy of digital humanities there is a contrast between the knowledge of the generations between now and then with regards to age-experience humanities is line to take on a leadership role creative endeavors of the digital humanities; utilizing critism and how it’s being used; combat the unethical standards and practices DH = interaction with education; the tools used to further education the rapid change of humanities and what that means what does militancy really achieve? overthrowing the current system; i.e. pulled the plug on Google and how that would influence everyone in society what actual action do we take in the face of this? Punk Rock scene - talk at the San Diego History Museum - *ask her to speak at the KNIT meeting* - "When Punk Hit San Diego" "Tech suffers from lack of humanities, says Mozilla Head" article from the Guardian - opinion piece; emphasis on needing the arts and humanities to contribute to the tech field - Mitchell Baker says firms should hire psychology and philosophy graduates to tackle information Shark Tank, article, philosophy ## Collective Goals: - creative endeavors, figuring out digital humanties in a new society, deconstructing the web, using tools to prevent millitant action? ### KNIT Posts - Category about articles, new link on website - the emotions behind creating posts/publishing them - what it means to be public with the digital humanities - Graduate students, created charter on posting, do we do the same? What can we do online/with public writing? What does this entail? Discussion: - Manifesto: well-written??? talking about new forms of knowledge - **Kelly:** interesting time-stamp about the digital humanities, 2009, - scientific and poetic knowledge; tailored towards the Black experience in America; you cannot quanitfy humanity's knowledge; how do we think about the world in terms of philosophy; how can we understand the intersections of different identities? - not purely binary; more fluid - **Micheal:** knowledegable, more than one lesson, more than one perspective, open to interpretation, humanity: knowledge is more personal? - 'the hero's journey'; their huge nemesis is their version of the "dragon; universal in its subjective way - mythology as a form of identity for humanity - *technopoly* - **Shel:** Facebook; the collective consciousness of Google,i.e. lens and connections to people known, - elites were using the humanities to become more worldy; thus, preventing access for average people - therefore, there is a loss of empathy; the humanities has been purposely been left out Mythology may not be true but there is some truth - **Zach:** we are inherent storytellers; - mythology does not need an institution; what about a story-teller - elders within a culture - protocols for story-telling? archetypes, recurring themes and things in decades worth of stories; - within families, traditions and stories are history Technology hurts humanity? - **Erin:** Why does Humanities Technology matter? Humanities knowledge is valuable in developing your personal world - are mythologies and stories accessible for everyone? Who is kept out? - social context/aesthetics prevy to how the culture is shaping the myths and vice-verse; self-selective - "math and sciences" vs. "arts and humanities" - **Rodrigo:** Fundemental to understanding culture and context, world mythology and creation stories and tribal stories in order to get many perspective -human condition is full of uncertainty and no direction -honest sense of direction of a child vs. an adult; - we have developed tools that have guided us towards living a better life; invevitably, human beings can be ethical/unethical; thus, this propels the idea of how technology and inventions can be used - i.e. Google AI - tools shaping about how we write, learn, and publish - we don't really know why we're here, therefore, we attempt to give ourselves meaning by creating mythology - How can we use this new tool? * The value of humanitity, is it valuable? Against math and sciences? scholarly articles on the humanities: - some are never read, does it matter if it is written then? - are we actually contributing something meaningful/impactful - *How do we value knowledge? **Kelly:** nothing has meaning or value if it doesn't have discourse, does it have value or meanining if no on reads it? - we are creating meaning by being in this research group; we provide access to things that otherwise be held up in their own spaces for specific individuals who have restricted access; therefore, if it's not accessible it does not have any meaning to it **Zach:** *pontification* do the images add value to the manifesto? no. he says no. "I am above picture books." They take away from the point. Sebastian: pictures before writing, the idea of what came before and what is now, different expressive modes, **Micheal:** pictures less intmidating, more easily digestable to all types of intellect accesibility is not just about availabilty but about using a broader vocab or engage all types of audiences What are the forms of engaging people in your work? Is it just - even we're just thinking strictly textual; are there different forms, modalities, lengths and platforms, etc. to change/manipulate/connect with other people to develop the skill sets - i.e. writing essays: Is it a tragedy that writing goes unread? Zach: No. because the nature of creating is continuing; unfortunate but not a tragedy if certain knowledge isn't absorbed; doesn't need to be neccessary Kelly: not all of your work has to have meaning, not everyone has to read it, you can write a ton but not all of it has to be read, vehicle to your next best thing Shel: filtering is important, if we read everything, it would serve no purpose Manifesto claims we need curators, needs to filter them out, but who filters it out, what is good or bad? Sebstian: We need curtators, Humanities needs an institution, if work isn't published, does it have any value? Everything is archived, is there an expiration date? accountability of past work; the impact on the present moment Private versus Public: would it make a difference? *New Normal* (Sebastian's commentary on publicizing academic papers) Does only expert knowledge matter? - expanded, divergent, collective - thinking What is the university's role today? Education and information is readily available now ### Gillard's: - corporate stand point, thinking from a very admin perspective, since the 60's, don't typically go to the website for the op-ed like this Zach: generally American invention, would not effectively create a new Internet Micheal: students don't comprehend or focus terms and conditions, Sebastian: growth with computers which seems natural, inventing a new internet is a strange concept - Is it possible to create a neutral Internet? What does neutral mean? Who gets to decide? - Not even KNIT- because the accessibility is constrained Readings: Click four times in order to compete the whole thing What is our output going to be?; feel free to post news articles creative expression/outlet about what you would see as the next step forward with digital humanities? Specifically, we're talking about KNIT. Give it a cameo! i.e. Manifesto on KNIT
