In this approach, the children's second language is used as the languageof instruction and means of communication for all or most of the school day. This provides children with the opportunity to learn their second language much as they had their first language, that is, through using it in natural and meaningful situations. Step 2 >Extensive research has attested to the effectiveness of immersion programs in enabling children to attain high levels of communicative proficiency in the second language, while at the same time allowing them to acquire subject matter content and progress in the mother tongue at rates equivalent to their peers in regular English programs (Swain and Lapkin, 1982; Genesee, 1987; Day and Shapson, 1989). However, research has also shown that there are still major gaps in immersion children's acquisition and control of many aspects of grammar despite the fluent, functional proficiency they achieve in their second language (Adiv, 1980, 1984; Harley and Swain, 1984; Day and Shapson, 1987).
