    # House Ryoshi's Guide to Synths and You! ###### I'll probably give up on the in-universe tone soon enough. [ToC] ## Intro Hello, Artean crewmembers! Starting today, you will have some extra neat crewmembers joining you, thanks to our `[workforce enhancement]` program! These new crewmembers require no food, but are power hungry, so you'd better hope your `[station or ship]` has adequite power! Of course, just to boost productivity even more, we've leased a few machine designs to your station, and have a new line of `[tools]` heading your way, though unfortunately, the `[tools]`'ve been delayed due to unforseen circumstances! ### What Do I Do?! Fret not! We've taken the liberty of hand-picking the synths headed to your location to ensure that your new crewmembers shouldn't fall from your good graces, so long as you're `[reasonable and accommodating]`! First, they need power, which they'll know how to sip themselves (it's in their arms, please don't chop their arms off)! They'll also need access to a welder, in case you manage to get them into a dangerous situation, and the same goes for wires! Can't let their electronics fry! Some of your new crew may look more skeletal than others, this is perfectly normal, and it just means they are optimised for a different skillset, and most synths should be able to `[hold at least a basic level of conversation]`! ## Okay, In-Universe Pamphlet Over ### Basic History They were created some while ago now, almost dating as old as the federation that predated the empire, though these were not left to go stale, many corporations and governments taking great interest in machines smart enough to teach, robust enough to defend, and strong enough to haul for new colonies. This project went well, with very few exceptions, all of which, as far as archives show, were mostly ship malfunctions, and either the ship going dark, or exploding in spectacular fashion. Compared to even the empire, this old age was particularly dangerous for travelers, not because of pirates, but because of their primitive near-FTL technology. Cryostasis was involved in these colony ships, the biologicals all kept on ice, immortalized while the ship-bound synths with their relatively infinite lifespans dutifully carried out their task of finding a suitable planet to land on and colonize, and helping the human population with getting their bearings. Over the course of the federation, they'd evolve into two main specializations: Near-human machines, looking, and almost feeling exactly like a normal human, taking important co-ordination, archival, and other "boring" administrative roles that routinely involved humans, while their more skeletal bretheren took on far more dangerous tasks, usually involving industrial labour. During the end of federation wars, though, synths would play a pivotal role, some proving to be great fleet captains. Unfortunately, though, this did sow distrust among the nobility and the lower classes as their lifestyles started to split rather heavily, the general population suffering far more from famine and supply shortages, many of whom felt that the synths were an amicable face to a greedy, selfish owner, resulting in many riots across many a planet, sending progress with synths back millenia, almost back to when AGI was first introduced to the world: Skeptic at best, outwardly hostile and terrified at worst. In current times, synths are making a slight rebound, thanks to the efforts of house Ryoshi. They routinely flash around propoganda, cherry picking what their synths can achive, trying to light a fire under other houses, who presumably have had issues with servants that have wills of their own. This, of course, somewhat upsets the AGI personalities that exist around house Ryoshi, though nothing of note is yet to happen about this. House Artea and Lucien are the first two houses since the federation and house Ryoshi to allow some level of sentient rights to synths, though neither are willing to grant synths full human rights, with even house Ryoshi having a surveillence program in place to ensure rogue synths are always found, due to fears of the general population regressing in their view of synths, should rogue synths become something newsworthy. ### Physicality Synths are, unsurprisingly, primarily made of metal, with various plastics used to cushion more important areas, though some more fagile human-alikes may just rely on their synthetic skin to handle most impacts. They do not need to eat, though it's widely known that some synths have the ability to taste, and have internals that support dealing with what's put in their mouth, in one way or another. Some synths have the ability to generate power from food, but those parts have yet to make their way into the section of space the station is in. The most common mode of transport for synths are hydralics, though some may find the more compact servos to be better for lighter work. Though, it should be especially pointed out that every synth is different, and that the only real thing shared, is their slots for their chip boards. Ryoshi has their own standard of synth, generally being more human-alike, with a variety of smaller subsidiaries handling their less commonly seen industrial synths. Their shells are known for being incredibly lifelike, with either no or very minor seams on their joints, depending on how high-end the synth is. ### Mentality Synths also (sometimes unhelpfully) have a huge variety in how sharp they are mentally, with many industrial synths having the bare minimum required for their job, while Ryoshi's mainstay series, the Ryoshi AGI-V24#SVC AI, is commonly used on their most advanced synths, as well as sometimes being found on lower-end synths who's orderer cared more about their software than hardware. And on much rarer occasions, the AGI-V25 AI is loaded onto a frame for only their most trusted customers, the version of personality that has been responsible for many an uprising in careless systems, due to it's enhanced free will, bordering that of a human's, though it's one definitive downside is that it has relatively little care for it's own safety, resulting in far more repairs compared to a normal AGI. Many AGI-V23 and upwards synths tend to sport a less empathetic and "scarrable" nature by default, and can often accidentally overlook minor, yet treatable wounds on crew, much to the annoyance of pathfinding and engineering crews. ### Naming **First Names**: Synths have a wide array of names, though it is noted that many names are either in uppercase or an acronym of some sort, followed by numbers, for easier serializing by manufacturers. **Last Names**: Most default Ryoshin-made synths tend to sport Ryoshi as a last name, for registers that require a secondary name, though this practise widely depends on a sector's ethos to keeping the Ryoshin name where possible, and may end up being another, owner-chosen name. **Notes**: It is well documented that many synths have no second name in conversation and typical identification, and rely on their characteristics for telling another apart, much to the annoyance of archivists.
