LinkedIn

LinkedIn is to work what Facebook is to friendship. And their tool for finding jobs is pretty good.

  • Pros: Used by a lot of employers, great filtering, inuitive functionality, you may be approached directly
  • Cons: Used by a lot of job seekers, jobs often no longer live, kind of chaotic

Otta

A dedicated job board that matches you with jobs based on your interests and experience - sort of like Tinder in that you get 40 jobs a day(?) and either add them to your shortlist or bin them.

  • Pros: cool to see your % match, valuable insights from their team, 'confirmed still live', built-in jobs kanban
  • Cons: I haven't got a job using it (yet)

AngelList

The go-to for start-ups. It still feels very grass roots, even though it is well-established in the tech community. Most likely place to find a co-founder, or be approached by a CTO.

  • Pros: an open space for less formal discussions, lots of variety given much earlier stage companies (often <10 people)
  • Cons: not particularly structured, talking to start ups is always risky

Recruiters

  • In the past, FAC has strongly discouraged working with recruiters as it undermines our ability to support ourselves financially
  • You may be hearing from recruiters
  • If it sounds interesting, have a conversation to learn what's out there
  • Don't take them too seriously, be cautious about their incentives
  • They can be really valuable

Side note

This is a numbers game, and we'll be using our time next week to develop a strategy to approach employment so that it is systematic, high-volume and effective.

Today's activity

  • Spend 15 minutes researching other job board options. If you like the look of any, add them to the list

  • Spend 10 minutes discussing as a team any parameters of your first job - the values, company size, sector, role you're interested in

  • Spend 30 minutes finding at least 5 jobs for anyone in your team but yourself. Try and keep these even so that at the end everyone has 5 jobs they can apply to

  • In the last 5 minutes, we'll hear from each team how it went

What next?

I would encourage you to apply to all five jobs in your own time.
You probably won't get the job, so don't spend more than an hour on this.
It is important to start not caring about rejection.
(If you do hear back, that's awesome)
