## Oct 26 Fri - Ads and social graph background
There are different types of advertisements that are available online. The banner advert uses animation or graphic images to pass information on a product. The interstitial banners are the advertisements found between website pages. Strokes (2013) claimed that the popups and pop-under are the adverts that come out on a web page when it is being viewed, mostly when a smaller window is opened (p. 300). The wallpaper adverts are responsible for changing the background of what is being viewed and are mainly used for branding.
Algorithmic discrimination can be seen in tracking where some adverts may not be tracked as expected. There are various factors which may determine the bias such as the type of browser used the operating system and internet service, provider. The cost per engagement may also result in bias. Some of the adverts may be provided for a higher price while others are created for a lower. The cost per click may also be defined by factors such as the demography of an individual, where the cost is more to some people and less to others.
Online manipulation can take place for different reasons such as harming, propaganda or discreditation. Discreditation and harming can take place with pop-up or pop-under adverts which are designed to provide negative information on an advert of a certain product. Propaganda can also happen when certain adverts are designed specifically to pass false information about an issue or good. The information may be negative such as the adverse effects of using a certain product. The harmful information pops-up when the user is on a website and read information which may create doubts (Stokes, 2013).
Privacy is seen in the information that will be used in the advertisement such as on social media sites. The private information and images are interfered with by the customers as they explore the credibility of the product.
## Nov 06 Tue - Dating
In the past, the landscape for dating is face to face, but nowadays people tend to use online dating app, people only need to answer few questions and post their basic background information, the software will automatically match one for them by common interest, age, region and gender. Poulsen (2014) mentioned that love becomes a data field and I think it is a disadvantage for dating.
For example, OKTrend (2010) noted that people are lying on social media, people can photoshop their photo, add their height even add their incomes. Some people think that online dating is no race effects but OkCupid data shows that discrimination still exists online because people are hiding themselves in the back of the messaging system. Therefore, they can choose to reply or not. On the other hand, digital online dating could be a crap detection like fake news, which spreads a lot of bad people in our life and it is not safe.
From my personal perspective, there is an enormous number of online dating sites and TV shows now but they all face two questions, it is either hard to recognize the one is truly fit for you or it is hard to identify the lier in the online world.
The process of registering online dating account or join the dating shows is a simple step but using the data to find a partner is hard. The data can be fake, and everyone can shape themselves perfectly in the online world, people can change their behavior between the online world and the real world. More importantly, people who choose to meet with their online dating partner might possibly set themselves in a dangerous position. Actually, there are plenty of examples that people pretend to be someone else online and lie to their online dating partner to scam their money. And also, sexual harassment is another critical issue that raise people’s concerns from online dating.
## Nov 09 Fri - Breakup
With the recent development of social media, people tend to using social platform to break up with their peers. The accepted social construct has always been that when one breaks up with someone, they should to do it in person and face to face. The other social construct is that there should to be a good reason for breaking up with someone, and it should be done in a manner that upholds dignity. Over the years, there are more and more teens who break up their relationships over the media or text messages and some through the use of voice calls.
Even though some people used social media to break up with someone but the data provided by Lenhart et al. (2015) claimed that some people still not acceptable of using social media to break up. From my personal perspective, I think use phone call, voice message or text message to break up is a disrespect behavior. On the other hand, Gershon (2012) explained the reasons as why people break up with others on social media nowadays is hard to break up because of the social grouping. People tend to post their relationship status and the second order information on social medias, which lead some relationship difficult to end.
In conclusion, I strongly feel that people who using social media to break up with their partner is because they are afraid to end in person and they need the social media to support them. Also, some people use social media as a weapon to bond their partner with them because they know that social platform is a open space and if you post something on that page which could lead the social grouping break.
## Nov 30 Fri - Collapsed context
Authenticity means a different thing in real life as opposed to its interpretation in social media. Therefore, in a social media setting being authentic means that you are yourself and when one post or tweet their thoughts, they are not directly directed to a particular audience. As such, Marwick & Boyd (2010) claimed this form of authenticity is done unconsciously. Social media is seen as a personal space where one can express themselves while ignoring the opinions of others or not letting those opinions affect them.
When it comes to social media chats and post just like in real life conversations, the users have to consider their audience before engaging them. They have to use different techniques when handling different audiences than they would do in a face-to-face situation. As such, one has more than one persona online. People use social media to brand themselves or to create a safe place where one can brand himself according to his imagination and how they want people to perceive them. Like earlier mentioned they view this as a personal space where they can do what they wish to self-present (Marwick & Boyd, 2010). For example, teenagers always post their selfies or travel photo on Instagram and Facebook to show their best way to present themselves. On the other hand, there are more and more people buy the followers on Instagram is because they want to show off themselves but its not authentic in real life.
Additionally, due to variable audiences users have to have multiple personas. The use of social media brings various audiences, and for the user to be able to interact with them, imagination and construction of their character according to social context has to be done. This affords the participant to adjust his persona appropriately. Hence, social media users will consider if they are using a media that is primarily public or private (Marwick & Boyd, 2010). This helps them to bring a topic that they can control rather than multiple topics. They also change their persona by imagining an ideal person reading their post who is usually similar to the writer and who shares the same views and opinions. Thus, there are many faces to each person in social media.
## Dec 04 Tue - Pushback
Reagle (2015) mentioned that “some people prefer not to look into the online reflecting glass of humanity, some people disable or restrict comment on their sites.”(p. 172) Some people may think that the use of technology has been on the rise and more people are relying on online communication with each other. The purpose of social media platforms have made the world to be a global village as information is circulated faster than before, which causes that some people think online communication is awful and it not easy to opt out as human beings cannot survive without it. From my personal perspective, I believe that everything has their positive effect and negative effect. If people can use technology correctly and understand how to manage technology, it actually can contribute to our society.
Online communication has become an issue in the society as it affects how people interact especially young people. Although technology use does not cause fatigue to the young people, it affects their day-to-day relations with each other and also family members. Despite this, the increase in technology has made people start pushing back or withdrawing from the use of technology. For instance, some people think Facebook makes them sad or emotional, but we should consider that Facebook is the only reason that makes people unhappy? Or there have many other reasons that affect people from being sad. So, people may only pushback due to various reasons. The first one is emotional dissatisfaction when they find out their needs are not met on social media. The other factor which influences people to pushback is external values like religion, politics, and moral reasons (Morrison, & Gomez, 2014).
In the past, people communicate with other by face to face because they do not have any social media. However, they interact with others by talk. After we have an online platform, people tend to use social media to communicate with other. It shows that people just use the different mediums to express their feeling, it does not matter in which mediums people use. Therefore, I think we all should not judge online communication or technology because it is not their fault. We should think about how to change our own behavior online. On the other hand, moderation is significant, we should encourage more policies to exist in online communication because technology can not restrict our behavior but policies can make our online behavior better.
