# Our Networks 2020 - Platform Planning
## Needs
- Guidelines to presenters:
- Opinion about decent tool and config options
- Some things to consider for folks bringing their own notetaking tool (e.g., don't share the link too publicly in advance; are your permissions open to all? can you temp. disable anon editing?)
- Use website?
- other confs resources here
- "speaker clinic" -- can we use someone elses?
- Moderation:
-....
## Our platforms:
- Program and semi-private aspects of the event
- Think through flow for providing access to sessions
- Calendar feels more important this year
- Benefit in not showing a "program" on the website in calendar form?
- Potential implementation:
- Imagenfest: Logged-in overlay with the private info
- Eventbrite flow
- Dat folks $$
https://github.com/pretalx/pretalx
https://pretalx.com/p/features
+ calendar integration
+ https://pretalx.com/p/try
+ Sched $$$
https://sched.com/
- That congress OS one?
- Or.......
- Encrypt the schedule and decrypt on fly if you provide a PW on the password
- digital decoder to get you in?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!?!?!?!
- ONLY USE A CALENDAR
- Email the dweb network of choice
- Videoconferencing:
- Reviewed: https://videoconferencing.guide/
- Ranked preference:
1. BBB (150) (via meet.coop if possible, slight cost consideration)
2. Zoom (500) (don't feel good about ethics)
3. Jitsi (20), but concerned about scale
Mayfirst: https://meet.mayfirst.org/
https://support.mayfirst.org/wiki/web-conference#Limitations
- BBB:
- Tested moderation functionality, seems to work!
- Cost?
- Hosts? meet.coop?
- Concerns
- Scale?
- Can't lock down room (prevent more people entering)?
- Workshop space:
- Some just on videconf platform
- Mozilla Hubs
- Streaming:
- Mentioned: Twitch, Vimeo, Youtube
- Needs:
- 3 works explicitly require livestreaming
- we generally stream talks
- there may be other content to stream?
- proposed afterparty?
- will we have something? (DJing?)
- do we have to merge multiple feeds?
- dc: I ~think~ but not for talks, just for switching between exhibited works and talks
- DON'T WANT TO MONETIZE THIS
- https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/ads-experience-updates?language=en_US
- Ranked preference:
1. Decentralized steam (IPFS)
- maybe add Hypercore
2. Twitch
- [to be clear one exhibited work has to use this]
- + lots of tools?
- + can delegate to other stream (i.e. the exbibited work?)
- - Advertising no way around it?
- - It's Amazon monolith
3. Youtube
- + Familiar to visitors
- + Already have ournets channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCudGRFTjVGsrKF0h27GER2g
- + out of the box relatively easy to set up
- - It's google monolith
- - Some things maybe restricted by viewer counts?
4. Vimeo
- Advertising (only way around this is $100/mth billed annually)
- least familiar streaming platform?
5. Twitter (Periscope) https://www.periscope.tv/
- - It's Twitter (uniquely bad takes but starting to come around)
- - Can you even OBS bro?!
6. Facebook
- -------- It's Facebook
- Next steps:
- email distributed.camp for lodown on how twitch worked out?
- Workshop: BYO tools for the most part
- Informal Spaces (e.g., relaxing, hanging out, informal spaces)
- Gather.town (100 people ish vibing)
- + Accessible
- + mauve: Interactions closest to in-person?
- Questions:
- those different "room links" went to Zoom, what are our options with this?
- loading custom map? (can we change them othernight?!)
- link in texture for the map?!?!
- Audio-only mode?
- Cost?!?
- Mozilla Hubs (30 people in room)
- Need have a good computer?!
- Questions:
- Never treat this as the place everyone goes?
- Hide links in Gather.town?
