Water and electronics don’t mix. Yet, despite Apple’s advancements in water resistance, many iPhones still fall victim to accidental splashes, dunks, or full submersions. Whether it’s a dropped phone in the sink, an unexpected rainstorm, or a toilet mishap, water damage remains a common and frustrating issue. https://party.biz/blogs/272647/428198/iphone-battery-not-charging-fix-now But don’t panic. A water-damaged iPhone isn’t always a lost cause. In many cases, it can be repaired—if you act fast and follow the right steps. This guide breaks down what you should do immediately after exposure, how to assess the damage, and all available repair options. Step 1: Act Fast—Turn It Off Immediately If your iPhone was just exposed to water, do not try to use it. Power it off immediately and resist the temptation to test whether it still works. Continued use can short-circuit internal components. What to do right away: Power off the iPhone Remove the case and SIM card Gently dry the exterior with a soft towel Tilt the phone to help water drain out of ports Avoid these mistakes: Do not plug it in to charge Do not shake it aggressively Do not put it in rice (this is a myth—rice doesn’t effectively absorb moisture and may leave behind dust) Step 2: Assess the Severity of Damage Water damage affects each iPhone differently, depending on: Duration of exposure Type of water (fresh, salt, chlorinated) Where water entered the phone Common symptoms of water damage: iPhone won’t power on Screen flickering or unresponsive Distorted sound or no audio No charging or overheating while charging Face ID, camera, or speaker malfunction Corrosion inside the charging port or SIM tray If you notice any of these signs, the internal circuitry or logic board may be compromised. Step 3: Try Basic Drying at Home While not a guaranteed fix, drying your phone properly at home can help reduce internal moisture. Option: Use a Drying Kit or Desiccant Packets Place the iPhone in a sealed container with silica gel packets or a commercial phone drying kit (available at electronics stores). Leave it for 24–48 hours. This can help draw out residual moisture. After the drying period, try powering the phone on. If it turns on and seems to work normally, back up your data right away—you may only have a limited window before further issues appear. Step 4: Professional Repair Options If the phone doesn’t turn on or is acting abnormally, it’s time to consider professional repair. Here are the main options available: 1. Apple Support or AppleCare+ Apple doesn’t cover water damage under its standard warranty, but if you have AppleCare+, you may qualify for a replacement at a reduced cost. Apple’s solution to water damage is usually a device replacement—not internal repair. Out-of-warranty replacement: $400–$700+ CAD depending on the model With AppleCare+: ~$129–$150 CAD incident fee 2. Independent Repair Shops Specialized iPhone repair centers like Apple Expert offer water damage diagnostics and board-level repairs, which can be significantly cheaper than replacing the whole device. What’s involved in water damage repair: Full disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning of internal components Logic board inspection and corrosion removal Replacement of any damaged parts (battery, screen, charging IC, etc.) Average cost: Diagnostics: $0–$50 CAD Cleaning & minor repair: $80–$150 CAD Advanced logic board repair: $150–$350 CAD Many shops offer no fix, no fee policies, so you don’t pay unless your phone is successfully repaired. 3. Data Recovery Services If your iPhone can’t be repaired but you need your photos, messages, or notes, data recovery services can help extract information from the damaged logic board. Data-only recovery: $200–$500+ CAD Offered by specialized labs or high-end phone repair shops Step 5: What About Water Resistance? Many users are surprised their iPhone suffered water damage at all—especially since newer models are advertised as "water-resistant." Let’s clarify: Water-resistant ≠ waterproof. iPhones are rated under IP67 or IP68, which means they can survive water up to certain depths and durations under controlled lab conditions. Water resistance degrades over time and is affected by drops, heat, and general wear. Apple explicitly states that water damage is not covered under warranty, even for water-resistant models. Step 6: Prevent Future Water Damage To protect your iPhone moving forward: Use a waterproof case when near water Avoid charging if the phone feels damp or wet Keep the phone away from steam-heavy environments (like bathrooms) Don’t trust water resistance—especially on older devices Water damage to your iPhone can be scary—but it’s not necessarily fatal. With quick action and the right repair service, your device may be fully recoverable. Whether you’re facing minor glitches or a completely unresponsive phone, there are solutions—from ultrasonic cleaning and logic board repair to full replacement. If your iPhone has taken an unexpected dip, act fast and explore your repair options now. You might be surprised how much can be salvaged—even from a seemingly hopeless situation.
