# Objectives 2021 review
# 1. Contribute to projects assigned
Target
- Understand the background to the project and my role on it.
- Take responsibility for learning any technical material.
- Take ownership of my module on the project.
- Ensure my module contributes towards the project goals.
- Collaborate with Project Lead and PI to develop solutions that join up expertise and knowledge
## Notes Camila:
- In both Palaoanalytics and the Leeds projects (Counterfactual Covid19 and Spenser) I have taken ownership of the project and contributed significantly to all angles of it from scoping, planning, coding to delivery.
- In all projects I have had to learn new domains (from microsimulation and computer vision techniques to front-end development technologies like React and JavaScript), which I've done successfully and in a productive manner to the project.
- The pandemic has had an impact in the amount of time my collaborators were available to contribute to projects (from childcare/home-schooling to taking unexpected leave). I made sure that progress of the project was not severely affected by the reduced capacity, as well as making sure to lighten the burden to my colleagues affected by these issues.
**Grade:** 4
# 2. Leading REG contribution to project
Target
- Collaborate with the PI (and others) to determine the project direction.
- Provide structure and technical and other guidance to other team-members or collaborators of the project, especially more junior team-members (where relevant).
- Understand the technical background material.
- Contribute towards project development.
- Ensure timely delivery, replan as necessary.
- Communicate with all stakeholders.
- Ensure project wrap-up and handover in good order.
## Notes Camila:
**Palaoanalytics project**:
- I'm the only REG contributor to this project, my academic collaborators are experts in their fields but no in data science or RSE practices, therefore it has been my responsibility to decide the direction and practices of the tool we are building for this project (pylithics).
- I have guided the postdoc of this project into using good RSE practices (from python development to version control and from to testing to documentation), and running regular pair programming sessions. I also encouraged him to apply for the SSI fellowship, and to connect to the open science community in his university, as a result he is now the Cambridge University "Data Champion".
- I have convinced the PI of this project into embracing open science practices (which is not very common his field). As a result, the pylithics tool is going to be an open source software that we hope it will be used by others in the human evolution community, we will be publishing it in JOSS, as well opening all the datasets.
- I have taken full responsibility in all the pylithics software development planning, tasks prioritization and delivery. The PI has repeatedly expressed his satisfaction with the fast progress of the project.
**Covid-19 Counterfactual**:
- I was the only REG contributor on the project for the first couple of months of this project, I took leadership in the scoping and designing the product that we would build (a dashboard demonstrating the counterfactual story of the first wave of Covid19 in Europe).
- I provided guidance in RSE practices to the collaborators, from running a session with the PIs and postdoc in how to use GitHub for version control and project management, to giving advice to the postdoc in different RSE practices.
- I taken ownership in organising the work into very clear tasks and issues and kept an organised project board that can help visualise progress, especially now that we are at the end of the project.
**Grade:** 4
# 3. Collaboration and knowledge sharing outside the Turing
Target
- Give external talks and courses promoting RSE and Turing culture to the Latin-American scientific community.
- Maintain an open source repository and manage community involvement.
## Notes Camila:
- Created all material and taught 10 hours of a hands- on data analysis virtual course for LA-CoNGA physics master course, for more than 50 students in Latin America.
- Supervised students on a 5 week data analysis project that is part of the LA-CoNGA physics syllabus.
- Organised weekly co-working sessions for the Spanish translation of The Turing Way. I've done active outreach to find more contributors. Currently we are by far the language with more translated percentage of the book.
- I have co-created and co-lead the Turing Data Stories project, which has a growing community and published already 3 stories and has at least 3 more on the way.
- Co-supervision of an undergrad physics degree project of a student of the Universidad Central de Venezuela. One of the main goals of the project is the evaluation of the reproducibility of machine learning methods used in particle physics, this is a collaboration with a researcher from the ATLAS experiment.
- Contributed to the scoping, planning and grant submission of the Research Data Science course to be developed by REG in the second half of 2021.
**Grade:** 4
# 4. Equality Diversity and Inclusion service area co-lead
Target
- Act as a point-of-contact within REG for the Service Area
- Identify areas where REG could do more to help the Turing or wider community via this Service Area.
- Participate in meetings, interest groups, working groups etc. related to the Service Area.
- Assist members of the Turing community in matters related to the Service Area.
- Develop processes and tools to facilitate tasks that are done within the Service Area, and ensure that they are documented and kept up-to-date.
## Notes Camila:
- As a co-lead of the EDI service area I focused the bulk of my contribution to help the recruitment service area to achieve a more diverse pool of applicants in the January 2021 recruitment round. Many fronts were tackled, from rewriting the job ad, running a strong outreach and communication campaign to promote positive action in order to increase the ratio of female applicants that would be interviewed. All these efforts resulted in a very successful recruitment campaing in EDI terms.
**Grade:** 5
# 5. EDI and Communications service areas contributor
Target
Develop a REG outreach agenda that focuses on EDI principles:
- Working with recruitment to do EDI focused outreach of new roles.
- Provide EDI related documentation for people doing outreach or organising outreach events.
- Organise communication efforts to visibilise and celebrate the diversity of the REG team.
## Notes Camila:
- Developed a communication campaign for the recruitment round of January 2021: from managing the REG account twitter communications, organising REG member Turing spotlights, and attending recruitment drop in sessions.
- In January 2021 I did a twitter take over in the @ResearchHerCode account with the goal of promoting RSE and RDS roles to that community and advertise our open positions at REG.
- Organised a hack session to create EDI focused documentation for people doing outreach, communication and running online meeting (this will be soon added to the Hut23 wiki).
- Co-run a workshop on Artificial Intelligence organised with the Red Cross for young refugees and asylum seekers.
- Participated in the Turing Podcast talking about LA-CoNGA physics project and open education project on Latin America.
