    # Ideas and Sign-up Sheet for ResBaz Tucson 2020 Do-A-Thon [Back to Resbaz List of HackMDs](https://hackmd.io/7oOSL_LcTsGyJwjOmg4raw) ## Overview This HackMD is intended to enable collaboration for the upcoming ResBaz 2020 event where a Do-A-Thon, that spans a few days (May 27-30, 2020), will complete the event. We encourage ideas for collaborative projects based on skills and tools that you know and those that you have learned at ResBaz 2020. An idea/project does not need to be devised in a formal manner. You can use part of the Do-A-Thon or all of it. It’s up to you! ## Instructions This is an open document to encourage content editing. You must be logged in to HackMD to edit. Some guidelines: ### General guidelines 1. Follow our Code of Conduct! Any abuse can be reported to resbazaz@gmail.com 2. Have fun! 3. Work as a team! ### For Idea/Project creator 1. If you have an idea/project, create a new item by copying the [template](#Template) provided here. 2. As the creator of this idea/project, you will be the Lead! 3. As Lead, you will provide a description of the idea/project. Keep in mind that possible participants may not be well-verse on the idea/project. 4. Reach out to ResBaz attendees to inform them of your idea/projects. 5. On the day prior to the start of Do-A-Thon (May 26), email participants and provide: 1. Zoom link 2. Prerequisite information 3. Guidelines/Policies? 4. Anything else that is pertinent ### For participants 1. Identify an idea/project that you would like to be involved 2. Provide your name and U of Arizona email address 3. Provide a quick bio and your background as it pertains to the idea/project 4. Respond to any questions from the Lead or other Team Members prior to the Do-A-Thon 5. Be present for the Do-A-Thon 6. Help the Lead to prepare presentation --- ## List of Ideas and Projects - [1. Spring Clean Your Data](#1-Spring-Clean-Your-Data) - [2. Mass-importing Emojis into Slack](https://hackmd.io/VndsfG8jQtW33OZ_ltLQww?both#6-Mass-importing-Emojis-into-Slack) ### [1] Spring Clean Your Data **Project Lead:** Fernando Rios, frios@arizona.edu **Project Description:** A block of time for people to sit down and clean up their computers. E.g., - Organize files and folders - Document stuff and create readme files - Figure out what to throw away and what to keep - Clean up your spreadsheets - Do some data cleaning and/or structuring for reproducible research - Create a backup plan Project lead will facilitate a loosely-structured virtual session and can share best practices and provide resources, tools, etc. There will be opportunities for individuals to share strategies, tools with each other. End goal is for participants to have actually cleaned up some of their files and/or data. **Do-a-thon instructions** - Take 5 minutes to figure out what you want to accomplish. DON'T focus yet on how to do it. E.g., - "I want to organize the files for project ABC" - "I need to clean up the spreadsheet from last year's fieldwork" - "I want to back up my dissertation files" - "I need to figure out a system for keeping my dissertation organized", etc. Write down your answer in the HackMD - We will work individually in 15 minute intervals. A 2-5 minute break for people to ask questions and get feedback from others. **Date and Times:** Friday 5/29 9:30AM - 11:30AM **Zoom Meeting Room:** [Main ResBaz Zoom room](https://arizona.zoom.us/j/95920510188) **Website:** - [Shared Google Doc](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AQjPYU3vSB-a5vtlWJxzEQixHKzhEGjOWh-TBEZLuuE/edit?usp=sharing) - Resources and tools for data management - https://osf.io/v6wm2/ **GitHub/BitBucket Repository:** N/A **Software and Tools:** - Access to Google Drive for shared notes Sign-up Here: 1. It lets you focus on building robust, configurable programs in a familiar way, all without having to worry about how it will be presented to and interacted with by your average user. > > **Why?** > > Because as much as we love the command prompt, the rest of the world looks at it like an ugly relic from the early '80s. On top of that, more often than not programs need to do more than just one thing, and that means giving options, which previously meant either building a GUI, or trying to explain how to supply arguments to a Console Application. Gooey was made to (hopefully) solve those problems. It makes programs easy to use, and pretty to look at! > > **Who is this for?** > > ... if you're building 'run and done,' around-the-office-style scripts, things that shovel bits from point A to point B, or simply something that's targeted at a non-programmer, Gooey is the perfect tool for the job. It lets you build as complex of an application as your heart desires all while getting the GUI side for free. **Zoom Meeting Room:** [Main ResBaz Zoom room (for now)](https://arizona.zoom.us/j/95920510188) **Date and Times:** Session 01: Wednesday, 2020-05-27, 10:30AM - 12:00PM Please vote on the When2meet poll link to in case we want to set up other sessions: <https://www.when2meet.com/?9148834-zd1qG> I think it'll take about an hour per application to add a simple GUI using Gooey (depending on how complex the input of your application is) **Website:** <https://github.com/chriskiehl/Gooey> **GitHub/BitBucket Repository:** <https://github.com/chriskiehl/Gooey> Chun's GitHub project to Gooey: https://github.com/ualibraries/DataRepository_research_themes Examples: <https://github.com/chriskiehl/GooeyExamples> Julian's demo script: <https://github.com/julianpistorius/irods-gooey> **Software and Tools:** - Python3, installed and working - Your own, existing Python script that you want to give a pretty, graphical user interface **Team Members:** 1.
