# RustContributor::new (onbboarding instructions)

## Step 1: Cloud desktops

Your mentor does the following[^1]

[^1]: Note: contributors already on a team with permissions.dev-desktop set to true in their team's toml file (e.g. T-compiler, T-infra) do not need to be added to the cloud-compute team.

* inside https://github.com/rust-lang/team
* run `cargo run add-person <your-github-username>`
* this adds you to your local repository
* Go to teams/cloud-compute.toml
* add your github handle to the list
* Create a commit and pull request

Once the PR is merged (and 5 minutes have passed for sync) you can connect to the cloud desktops

* make sure you have a ssh key on github
* check `github.com/your-username.keys`
* if you have no keys, add one via https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/connecting-to-github-with-ssh/adding-a-new-ssh-key-to-your-github-account

Try connecting

ssh gh-<your_github_username>@dev-desktop.infra.rust-lang.org

Note: make sure that you use the same capitalization for the user name as shown on github.

## Step 3: Find a good first issue

Unclaimed easy issues for rustc: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues?q=is%3Aopen+label%3AE-easy+no%3Aassignee

Sometimes there will be open pull requests that already link to the issue, for issues that have no open PRs, use https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues?q=is%3Aopen+label%3AE-easy+no%3Aassignee+-linked%3Apr.

pick one together with your mentor and write `@rustbot claim` on it.

## Step 3.5: Work on cloud desktops

The easiest way to connect to cloud desktops is to use [Visual Studio Code](https://code.visualstudio.com) and the SSH extension.

* [Install a SSH client](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/remote/troubleshooting#_installing-a-supported-ssh-client) which will be used by the SSH extension.
* Install the [Remote SSH extension](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=ms-vscode-remote.remote-ssh) on VS Code.
* Remote explorer is a new tab on the left
* click on the `+` and

## Step 4: Check out the rustc repository

* run `init.sh`
* you should now have a `rust` directory that is all set up for you
* go into the `rust`
* `./x.py setup`
* follow the prompts to generate a config
* `./x.py fmt`
* minimal command to see if anything works

## Step 6: Run your new test

./x.py test --bless src/test/ui --test-args your_test_name

## Step 7: Create a PR

*`git switch -c pick_a_branch_name`
* commit your changes
* TODO: need to add your own remote as https, not git, as vscode can't figure that out
* `git push`
* will automatically open a browser tab to authorize
* will show a message with a hyperlink that you can click to automatically open a pull request
* in the new pull request window, write the following things:
* `r? @your_mentor's_github_handle`
* `fixes #1234` (issue number of the issue you fixed)
