GGG 298 - Week 3

Wednesday lab - 1/21

Conda for software installation

Friday Discussion - 1/24

Things to discuss:

  • where does data science fit in, again?
  • "data science is capable of being hypothesis driven" - is this important? is this the only role? how do you "test hypotheses" using only data?
    • (and come to think of it, how do astronomers "test hypotheses"?)
  • how do you generate hypotheses? What steps or continuum are there between generating and testing hypotheses? (is generating hypotheses bad?)
  • how can data science help in designing experiments?
  • other thoughts -
    • noise reduction in large data sets is important
    • different "kinds" of scientific may be important at different stages of a field's maturity. ("poking around" vs "testing hypotheses" vs "building models")
    • where does modeling come in, anyway?
    • how is data science involved in communicating scientific results?
  • why is everyone so excited about bioinformatics, anyway? (or, at least, why is everyone sequencing so much stuff?)
    • how dependent is science, generally, on new methods of measurement?
  • why is biology so focused on hypothesis testing?
  • (what is data science, anyway?)

Homework for Week 4

Assignment

(Due Friday 1/31 at 11am, entered into this form.)

Please read What about all those genes of unknown function?. Assuming someone gave you $50m of money to award to scientists in grants for 5 years, what would your first three (or more) priorities be, and how would you divide that money up? Then we can discuss why on Friday!
