--- tags: scipy, new contributors meetings --- # SciPy New Contributors Meeting Welcome to the monthly call for new contributors to SciPy 🎉 * Next meeting: Friday June 20th, 2025 @ 8PM UTC * Join via [Zoom](https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84441463701?pwd=Wtsa0aLa251coic5f3ka8aZD1uwnd2.1) ### Code of Conduct We want to take a moment to remind you that this meeting, like all project spaces is meant to be open, welcoming, diverse, inclusive, and it's important for us to have a healthy community. Like all SciPy spaces, and everyone participating in them, this meeting will follow our [code of conduct](http://scipy.github.io/devdocs/dev/conduct/code_of_conduct.html). If you haven't read it yet, please take some time to do so later on as it already applies to you. For now, in short, please be kind and generous towards one another. > please add your names (and github handle in brackets) to the list of attendees. This will make it easier to stay in touch later on issues and pull requests (PRs) > This is optional since these notes will be recorded in our Github repository. If you'd like you can also paste your answer in the zoom chat 😉 ## June 20th, 2025 **Present:** * Introductions: * Name * A bit about our experience with SciPy/Python as users * Newcomer: why are we interested to start working with the project * Maintainer/contributor: how long have we worked with the project and what do we primarily do ## May 30th, 2025 **Present:** Melissa (@melissawm), Riley * Introductions: * Name * A bit about our experience with SciPy/Python as users * Newcomer: why are we interested to start working with the project * Maintainer/contributor: how long have we worked with the project and what do we primarily do * Riley asking questions on how to get started and how to choose issues to work on. ## April 25th, 2025 **Present:** Melissa (@melissawm), Nick ODell (@nickodell), Shammeer (@shammeer-s) * Introductions: * Name * A bit about our experience with SciPy/Python as users * Newcomer: why are we interested to start working with the project * Maintainer/contributor: how long have we worked with the project and what do we primarily do * Shammeer is contributing to other projects and is interested in scipy.optimize. * Discussed a possible issue to contribute to * Nick has an issue building docs * Fixed by using Python 3.12 instead of 3.13 ## February 28th, 2025 **Present:** Melissa (@melissawm), Ritwik () - https://discuss.scientific-python.org/c/contributor/scipy/32 - https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/dev/roadmap-detailed.html - --- ## December 13th, 2024 ### NumFOCUS Working Toward an Energy, Climate, and Environment Workshop in 2025. You are warmly invited to join us on January 16th for the kickoff discussion leading toward an Energy, Climate, and Environment Workshop in 2025. This workshop will focus on leveraging open source software as critical infrastructure to address key challenges in these domains. It will bring together developers, practitioners, academics, decision makers, industry participants, and local actors to collaborate on actionable outputs. The structure of the workshop will be defined by participants of monthly discussions and presentations that take place in interest group meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 1 PM ET. Our January 16th meeting will mark the inaugural session of this interest group and lay the groundwork for future activities. We hope you can join us on the 16th! If you're unable to attend but wish to participate in future discussions, please email jon@numfocus.org. Feel free to share this invite with anyone you feel would be interested in these activities. You might want to adapt the [`SYSTEM_VERSION_COMPAT` environement variable](https://keith.github.io/xcode-man-pages/compat.5.html) for your terminal session (or probably even globally to ease development generally) by setting its values to (at least, based on the piece of source code given above) 0, 1 or 2. This week, we will go through a live PR submission for the SciPy documentation. --- ## Notes from November 18, 2022 **Present:** Tiago Tannus (@tannus), Kai Striega (@kai-striega), Melissa Mendonça (@melissawm) - Tiago Tannus wants to start contributing. Kai suggested https://github.com/scipy/scipy/issues/17356 - For Cython, there are a couple of good videos on youtube, and the docs are pretty good. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMvkiQ-gOW8 - https://scipy.github.io/devdocs/dev/index.html - This is the table of contents for the contributor guide. Make sure you are looking at the "dev" version of the docs to get the latest documentation updates - A good option is to look at miniconda: https://docs.conda.io/en/latest/miniconda.html - [Good first issues on the repo](https://github.com/scipy/scipy/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3A%22good+first+issue%22) ## Notes from August 19, 2022 **Present:** Melissa (@melissawm), Pamphile Roy (@tupui), Andrew Nelson (@andyfaff), Giuseppe Dilillo (@peppedilillo), Jeevanshi (@femme-js) - https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/dev/dev_quickstart.html - https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/dev/contributor/development_workflow.html#writing-the-commit-message - https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/dev/contributor/continuous_integration.html#skipping ## Notes from July 22, 2022 **Present:** Melissa @melissawm, Pamphile Roy (@tupui), Sebastian Berg (@seberg), Aman Goel, Tyler Reddy - https://github.com/scipy/scipy/pull/16587 - Do we want to add a "onboarding" label or keep using the sprint label for this kind of issue? - At NumPy, we only have a sprint label, but it could be good to add another one. ## Notes from May 27, 2022 **Present:** Melissa (@melissawm), Pamphile (@tupui), Will(WillTirone), Riya Saxena(@29riyasaxena), Ankit, Abhay, Ononiwu Maureen, Priyanshu Pansari, Aryan Gupta * Open source etiquette: how do you work collaboratively with a maintainer? How to interact with other people in issues or PRs? * You are expected (and encouraged) to try things yourself, but a maintainer should be able to guide you if you have questions. * A new communication channel is in progress (will probably be slack). This could be a good way to ask questions and get help from maintainers * If you want to know where to work next, or what kinds of features to invest in, look at [the Roadmap](https://scipy.github.io/devdocs/dev/roadmap.html) * Sprints * These work by demand, usually tied to conferences. Sometimes they are remote, sometimes in person. We anticipate participating at least in the next SciPy conference sprints. * How would a new contributor familiarize themselves with the code? * [DataUmbrella presentation on Contributing to SciPy (video)](https://youtu.be/V1FCSijy460) * Nobody understands the entire codebase  * Try to pick up something you like or are familiar with, and start from a limited scope * Doing code reviews * Any tips on git/github? * Test your changes locally before pushing to github * We ask that people not rebase before the review is done, otherwise the reviewer loses track of the changes. * We never push our own pull requests (*self-merge*) ### Action Items - [ ] Create a screenshare of a PR review > Newcomers please add items to the agenda based on your interests! What would you like us to discuss? do you want to ask something? are you already working on a specific PR? you can add a link to it ✨ Would you like to get some guidance on how to navigate some of the code? Or learn how to add a test? We will do our best to answer or help you connect you with the right people ☺️ ## Useful Resources * [Our contributor Guide](http://scipy.github.io/devdocs/dev/dev_quickstart.html) * This is where we keep [past meeting notes from the new contributors meeting](https://github.com/scipy/archive/) * You will soon find today's meeting notes there * You can also have a look at topics and links that were shared before 🧐 * Contributing to SciPy - Video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1FCSijy460 * Our meetings calendar https://scientific-python.org/calendars/ ### Communication channels How will we communicate asynchronously while working on the project? * [Developer mailing list](https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/scipy-dev) * We publish information which is important for contributors on this list. People from other projects might also share useful information or questions here. * [Slack space invitation](https://join.slack.com/t/scipy-community/shared_invite/zt-1a76bomjr-fuS1ZTnmP7b32kIhLb6QMg)
