Project Hour

Boards:

Meeting structure

15-30 minutes (as efficiently as possible)

  • Review incubator board and non-incubator board via brief status updates with a focus on any changes and blockers
    • Challenges, next steps, new projects

Remaining time

  • Coworking on project
  • If no coworking opportunities, solo work on a project

Optional

  • Discuss incubator or project processes as a group Do this during group processes hour

Ongoing discussion topics

  • Defining our level of involvement in dissertation projects or other grad student projects, and documenting this somewhere
  • Project planning (plans, estimation, scope, etc.)
  • Review project plans periodically (set cadence)

Meeting notes

Rolling, reverse chronological notes for each meeting

Next time

  • Do we want do this type of work (coaching), that's one-on-one coaching that's between drop-in hours and incubator?
    • Might not be enough time to really help people learn
  • geotargets hours

Project follow-ups:

  • Talk to people 0.1-1yr after project completion
  • Motivated by C. diff incubator that got abandoned and re-made from scratch, GSI dashboard that is meant to have longevity
  • Remind people we can continue to support them and do additional projects

Action items:

  • Update processes for project wrap-up to include a step to add an issue to board 6 months (12 sprints) out to remind us to follow-up
  • Create list of questions to ask in follow-up (email)
  • Follow up on GSI dashboard project (wrapped about 6 months ago)

2024-08-14

  • rnpn
    • Waiting to dig into project plan until there is more clarity around: scope of work; potential for funding; potential for additional hires/collaborators?
  • Add drone work once the goals and projects are clear

2024-07-03

  • Bayesian tree ring project w/ Margaret Evans
  • Fish app incubator -> completed
  • Reconnect with Eldridge Wisely in/before the fall

2024-06-06

  • Possible consultations with Vish about C diff app
  • New proposals: NSF cybertraining w/ TAMU

Incubators

Incubators

  • Pinged volcalc collaborators
  • GSI almost done (blog post)
  • Date palm transpiration closed
  • Still need to talk to Scott re: fish app
  • Red squirrel: most recent survey data is up; waiting for old data curation (almost there!)
  • Mountain lion: we don't have capacity at the moment, and waiting to hear back from collaborators
  • rnpn: Temporarily, thermal calendars is higher priority
  • Others can stay in planning

Funded

  • Volcalc: nearing completion. Outstanding PR to check validity of mol files; going to attempt CRAN submission again.
  • PSInet: >120 datasets, moving towards author QA + database design
  • FIA: On pause; looking for next steps
  • AZmet: Need to check in with Dave re: infrastructure
  • Thermal Calendars: Eric needs go ahead on GDD methods. Otherwise, next step will be generating models/figures for a paper.
  • SPARC'd: Fixing assorted problems (build w/Java; restricting user-editable fields; following-up on data quality checks).
  • LLM/Rangeland Docs: Met with Nirav about chatbot to learn about LLMs in academic context; need to schedule follow-up meeting to talk about details of implementation + cost

Other

  • Renata met with Osas 4/23 and handed off code

2024-03-13

Osaretin Olurotimi help

  • Professor in Ag and Resource Economics
  • Project on effects of climate on children in Uganda
  • Need to download climate data & wrangle
    • Some code from previous collaborator
    • She is learning R
  • Renata will work with her

Theresa Crimmins project

Rangeland docs project

  • Started as incubator using ML to classify documents
  • Followup funding to use LLMs somehow
  • 25k for now through september

2024-02-14

  • Decide who would be second on rnpn incubator (and determine approximate start date)
    • We might delay the start of this until Jeff Switzer has more capacity and to dovetail with thermal calendars project (earlier start date)

2024-01-03

  • Eric had an idea about the saguaro data involving citizen science, but doesn't know if its appropriate or if we already talked about it.
  • What more do we need to know about these projects?
  • New possible project #1: TRIF carbon dataset project with Dave Moore
    • Estimating carbon stocks and fluxes across state of Arizona
    • Start with stocks, have identified 10 datasets; shouldn't need to derive carbon values?; challenge is to summarize across different spatial and temporal extents and get confidence across states
    • Broader project covers natural, crop, and geological; wants to seek other funding to expand across North America and then globally
    • Start this month; other collaborators are two current grad students (Charlie Devine & someone else) + incoming postdoc
    • Page 2-3 of AIR proposal
  • New possible project #2: CASC project work with Theresa Crimmins
    • Part 1: calculate average and this year estimate emergence of invasive insects in the northeast; they have Python scripts to calculate these raster products, just need updated variables; they might do this
    • Part 2: publish 2 papers, one data publication (they have some experience with) and publication on trends across time and space; made it clear that they would need to lead the research pub; latter can be done in R if we want
    • Work wouldn't start until spring (April / May) or summer, they need to gather more stakeholder info
    • Page 9 of CASC proposal

2023-11-22

  • Kristina needs to follow up with Dan McDonald, Theresa Crimmins, and Melissa Curran
  • STAC catalog moved to Done
  • Fish App need to solidify maintenance and other ongoing efforts

2023-10-25

  • Moved Green Stormwater Infrastructure / Vanessa Buzzard into "in progress"
