Are you interested in discussing about the challenges and opportunities around Open Source hardware products? **We know that open source is innovation on steroids. But what changes need to take in the industry and in policy to incentivize that more product manufactures adopt open source?** **OPENNEXT** has been looking into fundamentally changing how we manufacture products using the power of open source. OPEN!NEXT has worked on bringing together SMEs and makerspaces across Europe to develop new products based on open-source principles. In close contact with local designers and communities, we help companies go from 0 to prototype and commercial roadmap with the power of open source. OPEN!NEXT consists of 19 project partners from seven European countries. Our expertise ranges from business and data management, to design processes, manufacturing and communication. ##Links from Christian RMC: https://wikifactory.com/+opennext/stories/the-revenue-model-catalogue OS-BMT: https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVOCO3P44=/?invite_link_id=569087439253 ## Questions for the speakers 1. Your first question - Your first answer 2. Robert and Christian: Can you say then that you are specialized in researching about openness and open design? - We explore and try to figure out how digital practices can be transfered to the hardware domain. We want to show the world and encourage them to use these practices to change the industry. - Study activities in industry and exploring possibilities. So there is a combination of research, exploration and projects. 3. Do you think open hardware could become also a billion-euro economy? - It is hard to say today whether it will be comparable to FOSS, but given the amount of activities that have emerged in the last fifteen years, there is a steady development in a good direction. So, I'm optimistic. (Robert) 4. Does the fact that it might not be so profitable as the FOSS make less relevant? - We should be careful not to expect the same from a very different sub-domain in the OS movement as much as they share convergent values. (Robert) 5. Could you talk about why open hardware can help tackle sustainability issues? - Circularity business models can be extended well in many cases with OSH practices. Involving a community of concerned stakeholders in co-creation may for example extend ecological and social impact. (Robert) 6. How important is public-private investment to help open hardware takeoff ? - Expecially for open hardware from science, technology transfer funds should be evaluated closely. OSH also needs an infrastructure public-private investments would be needed in future. (Robert) 7. Does policy making needs to change radically to enable this change? - Mapping different areas for policy making to foster open hardware practices is something that we would be very interested in joining. For now, I would give a wholehearted YES. (Robert) 8. How will you support initiatives that are not chosen in your first batches? - Unfortunately, we only do one batch. 12 companies coolaborate with us in the demonstration phase on a mutual basis without being funded. We have 6 SMEs partners who received funding and they were instrumental for trial and error in the piloting phase. However, funding is a big issue and we would be eager to join other initiatives to do something about that in future. (Robert) 9. Robert, why do you choose to work with start-ups and SME's in your program? Do the bigger companies not have more resources needed for well documented projects? - Maturer SMEs are able to create some needed capacity, yet they are flexible to extend there activities in this direction. Some entrepreneurs are quite versatile and devoted, but it's a bit harder for them. Corporates will probably have to grow in future to engage in the OSH ecosystem. It is not just organisational intertia, but also the fact that supernatural returns are not so likely very soon. (Robert). 10. Do you think openness of manuals and how actual products are build at the moment can impact fixing and making lon lasting products? - C: Yes, I do believe that 11. Cristhian: Do you have a tutorial or a place to get started with your tool? - Delft- Preview-BMT link is right here: https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVOCO3P44=/?invite_link_id=695556607363 13. What priority do you give to aligning similar open-hardware initiatives that are developing in parallel to avoid wasting resources? - It's part of what some of the 18 SMEs are looking at. We don't particularly support Right to repair with dedicated outputs in OPENNEXT, but certainly, this is an important area in future within the OSH domain. (RObert) 14. What are the biggest barriers for companies to start opening their hardware design? C: Having the courage to let go. 15. Being a start-up/SME, Is it useful to profile yourself as open-source company ? I do feel like goverments are a bit hesistant to give funds with the idea of protecting in this case 'Dutch knowledge'. **I second this question** - Maybe not - R: Governments are probably hesitant because they have to understand first how socioeconomic value can be created and for that we would have to start mapping it. (Robert) 16. You've both mentioned revenue models. What are/is the most used revenue model for Open Source Hardware, that might convince companies to open up currently closed product designs? - C: Most OSH companies make their money by selling hardware directly to customers. Also, many companies save money by having a community support function. 17. Anna: I just wanted to add on to what Christian was saying about Open being a tool h to at can support sustainability. I think the possibilities for decentralised manufacturing are a big opportunity here - the need to keep proprietary designs secret is one of the major drivers for centralised global supply chains - with open products you can make them much closer to where they are needed - C: I definetly agree, but we most be mindful that it is possible to spread 'bad' manufacturing, my hope is that because it's closer to you, you want to make it have as little environmental impact as possible.
