# Temp: Gitter Notices
---
Note, these have all been posted. This HAckMD page can be reused for something else.

Hi All,
The conda community is unifying our online community interactions around a few platforms. First, the [conda community forum](https://conda.discourse.group/) was launched in September 2022 for longer form Q&A (try it!).
**Now we are consolidating our chat into [Element/Matrix](https://element.io/). This will have a minimal impact on Gitter users.**
The Element/Matrix folks bought Gitter several years ago and [their integration of Gitter into Matrix/Element will be done next month](https://blog.gitter.im/2023/01/16/gitter-is-going-fully-native-matrix-in-feb-2023/). This means you can continue to use Gitter to access Gitter rooms, and as of next month you will also be able to access Matrix features like [the new **conda space**](https://app.element.io/#/room/#conda:matrix.org). Spaces are a flexible way to organize chat rooms (and other spaces) in Matrix.
So, you don't have to do anything to keep using this Gitter room. However, if you want a head start on Matrix/Element, we strongly suggest reading the **[one-page guide to Conda Community Chat using Element](https://element.io/)** in the Conda Community Forum.
If you have any questions, please post them here (short) or in forum post (longer).
---
This move makes this a good time also reconsider our current chat organization. How do people feel about renaming this channel from `conda` to `conda-help` and then creating a second channel called `conda-news` (or something like that)? Most of what happens on this channel is *conda help* and a name change would make that clearer. Having a separate channel for news would allow people who only want to get the news to get just that.
The downside is that having fewer rooms is generally better.
What do people think? Should we
1. Rename this channel to `conda-help`?
2. Add another channel called (something like) `conda-news`
Should we do one of them, both of them, or neither? (No matter what we do, this room will still be available in Element and Gitter.) Please respond in thread.

We are going to make these lists read only around Jan 1 2023:
* [conda@anaconda.org](https://groups.google.com/a/anaconda.com/g/conda)
* [conda-forge@googlegroups.com](https://groups.google.com/g/conda-forge)
There are being replaced by the conda community forum. Conda is also being replaced by the announce@conda.org list.
What will the text of these announcements look like?

Hello all,
**This mailing list is now closed to new posts.**
In recent years, support mailing lists like this one have largely migrated to online forum and chat formats. conda-forge has joined that trend, and it's time to shutdown this list. **We strongly encourage you to join us in our new spaces:**
## Conda Community Forum
The [conda Community Forum](https://conda.discourse.group/) is an online forum for questions, answers, news, and discussion about the conda ecosystem. **The [conda-forge](https://conda.discourse.group/c/pkg-building/conda-forge/25) section is decidated to conda-forge.** Take a look at the **[Package Builders](https://conda.discourse.group/c/pkg-building/15)**, **[Users](https://conda.discourse.group/c/use/7)** and **[News](https://conda.discourse.group/c/news/6)** sections too.
## conda-forge chat
If you have a short question, then you are encouraged to post it to the **[conda-forge main chat](https://app.element.io/#/room/#conda-forge:matrix.org)** room. There are also [several other chat rooms for specialized discussions](https://app.element.io/#/room/#conda-forge-space:matrix.org).
### Matrix/Element or Gitter?
All conda-forge chat rooms are available in **[Matrix/Element](https://app.element.io/#/room/#conda-forge-space:matrix.org)** and **[Gitter](https://gitter.im/conda-forge)**. If you already use Gitter then it's easy to add the conda-forge room(s) to your chat. However, **in general Matrix/Element is a better choice because Gitter is no longer being developed.**
If you aren't familiar with **Matrix** (the underlying infrastructure and protocols) and **Element** (the most popular tool for working with Matrix) then please see:
* [A short guide to getting started](https://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2022/11/getting-started-to-matrix-chat-for-beginners.html)
* The [Element User Guide](https://element.io/user-guide) for all the details of setting up and using Element. If you prefer video and have 25 minutes then [check out this video from Techlore](https://youtu.be/2Qgy43j-3lA).
The conda-forge Matrix space is also linked to from the [conda Matrix space](https://app.element.io/#/room/#conda-forge-space:matrix.org).
### Where to ask: Forum or Chat?
If your question is more than a sentence or two then the forum is better. The forum is also easily searchable, and is indexed by search engines, so posting there helps the community more too.
However, if your question is short and is likely to have a short answer then chat is a great place to post it.
### conda-forge news
The [conda-forge announcements page](https://conda-forge.org/docs/user/announcements.html) is the definitive source of conda-forge news. News posts on that page are also available in an [RSS feed](https://conda-forge.org/docs/news.rss)
We look forward to seeing you online!

Hello all,
**This mailing list is now closed to new posts.**
In recent years support mailing lists have largely migrated to forum and chat formats. Conda has joined that trend, and we welcome you to join us in our new spaces:
### Conda Community Forum
The **[conda Community Forum](https://conda.discourse.group/)** is an online forum for questions, answers, news, and discussion about the conda ecosystem. There are sections for **[Users](https://conda.discourse.group/c/use/7)**, **[Package Builders](https://conda.discourse.group/c/pkg-building/15)**, **[News](https://conda.discourse.group/c/news/6)** and other topics too.
### Chat
If you have a short question, then you are encouraged to post it to the **[conda main chat](https://app.element.io/#/room/#conda_conda:gitter.im)** room in Matrix/Element. To join Matrix/Element the **[one page guide to Conda Community Chat using Element](https://hackmd.io/Zs31AxcbTC2bekMsXuYH0g?view)**. There are also several other chat rooms for specialized discussions -- see the **[Conda Matrix Space](https://app.element.io/#/room/#conda:matrix.org)** for the complete list.
### Where to ask: Forum or Chat?
If your question is more than a few lines long then the forum is better. The forum is also easily searchable, and is indexed by search engines, so posting there helps the community more too.
However, if your question is short and likely has a short answer then chat is a great place to post it.
### Conda Announce Mailing list
**Finally, we are pleased to announce the new [announce@lists.conda.org mailing list](https://lists.conda.org/wws/info/announce).** This is a low-volume moderated mailing list. If you want to know what's happening in the conda community then pleae **[subscribe now](https://lists.conda.org/wws/subscribe/announce).**
We look forward to seeing you online!
