Identify a Common Vision Our common vision is to empower students to learn better and be on top of course material, by utilizing data. ### Commonalities *Who makes up your team? What are some common things you are interested in? Tell each other about the things you put down on the survey and expand on some of your passions.* - Three of us went to the same hs - Four girls, two guys (all cs majors) - How do each of us take notes? - Jacob + Nick: nah - Jacob: Flashcards - Nick: Can't read my own handwriting - Gwen: Running google doc - Phoebe: "it's somewhere on my computer" - Georgia + Giorgie: Handwritten notes - Rewrite w/ colored pens, etc (lots of value in writing things) - What each of us is excited about? - Georgia: - Leveling the playing field, education - My brother has struggled and there's a lot of room for help - Phoebe: - At Dartmouth SAS, they have a bunch of different products/ideas to help out but they aren't very user friendly/realistic - Giorgie: - Some much responsibility on the student **outside of class** - Gwen: - Really excited about using this new technology but especially doing something interesting with the raw speech transcription - Jacob: - Taking classes online, I personally never used the transcription but if there was a way to read the whiteboard (open-sourced software) and link that with the transcription - Link the transcription to slides (break it up) - Nick: - Interested in the issue of equitable test taking and making resources evenly available to all students of different socio-economic background - How to level the playing field socio-economically, education access, differing abilities - target the beginning of the learning process - Jacob - should we really hone in on the quiz aspect of it and try and gamify it so that is really fun - it would be really really cool if we could create an actually useful quiz, but IDK ### Inspiration *What are some things each of you is inspired by?* - Georgia: - Inspired by increasing student accessibility services - Nick: - inspired by huge amount of unused data (lecture video / recording, notes) that esssentially becomes obsolete after the class - no one watches full lecture notes ### Problems of Interest - Age group: - Start local -> global: Talk to Hanover High - Reinforcement learning - Quiz generated by content -> feedback for teachers? - Organization - how to help kids who struggle to organize class content - Accomidations - process to get accomidations for learning disabilities/differences could be streamlined ### Identify *Which of the above is most interesting to all of you?* ## II. Narrow In *Now let's try narrowing in on a problem that interests all of you. Make sure to go around the table and listen to everybody on your team without interruption.* - JACOB: there are two directions we can head in (based on what we discussed) -- that said, if we can come up w a way to go from a trasncript to meaningful questions, that would be incredible. - Reinforcement Learning - quiz idea - then, why is the quiz more useful than something a teacher wrote up - finding most used words, fill in gaps to make sure people caught certain aspects of the lecture - use transcript to identify concepts/buzzwords in a lecture. Then, analyze student's existing notes and use that to let them know what they may have missed - Organization - making information digestible, help kids who struggle to organize class content - Georgie: Wearable - you let it know when something important is happening, and it'll mark that & store the info - Focus on one area/type of class #### Coolness - If we can make something meaningful to help people digest all the information of a lecture - If we could pick up on important parts of the lecture #### Challenges - Creating meaningful questions from transcriptions - Different types of classes and structures - Getting people to use the resource in a helpful way - Best way to learn is by writing things down yourself #### Success - Finding a useful application for Whisper in classrooms and - DOES SOMETHING COOL - helps empower students -
