PySAL Agenda - May 3, 2019

Chair: Renan

Agenda

  1. geodacenter/spatial_access and the concept of "aligned" projects? (Julia, Levi)

    • Julia'd like to know to possiblity of adding a new package in PySAL (spatial access metrics/scores)
    • They also have travel time computations/solutions
    • GPL license? Since this package will be only for the spatial access metrics (therefore, a "subpackage") license would not be a problem
    • Need for take a look at the submodule contract
  2. Foss4gworkshop feedback (Serge, Eli, Stef)

    • the main audience was mainly for developers
    • but the feedback was just great.. feeling that the 2.0 version was not a problem
    • the binder suggestion helped a lot (even having to rebuild during the workshop). The binder really worked.
    • Microsoft has a solution for notebooks (an instance of JupyterHub) (which is free at least for now).. could be alternative for binders. (https://notebooks.azure.com/)
  3. GSoC discussions/updates

  4. releasing packages on conda-forge (Eli)

    • Easier than Eli's thought
    • PySAL is in conda already (but not the subpackages)
    • James would like to contribute that also also Stef
    • Idea: tutorial from Eli on how to push into conda
      (Friday 3:30pm, next week 5/10)
    • Do we need to add the tests for Python 3.7 for every package? (this question raises if we want to do greater than 3)
    • But some of the versions might not be available in conda-forge (for example, 3.5 might be a problem)
    • Serge's suggestion: let's go for 3.6 and 3.7 (numpy will drop 3.5 soon for testing)
    • Here is a document for keeping track of conda-forge recipe maintainer ownership.
  5. Discuss Release agenda:

    • segregation in the next release (July, 2019)
    • spopt (January, 2020)
    • "spatial access metrics" package (January, 2020)
    • accessibility (in July, 2019 or January, 2020)
    • tobler (July, 2020)
  6. logo updates

    • subpackage logos

      • instructions for putting logo on subpackage sites and have .icon thumbnails in the address bar?
    • new logo for spaghetti

    • black dark/blue t-shirt idea for scipy with the releases dates on the back and the logo on the front

    • revive the ideas of stickers (circle could work well and even save money)

      • transparent background for appearance of die-cut
  7. PySAL Online course? (DataCamp recent occurences) (Renan/Dani) (on hold)

    • look for other alternatives (Renan)
