# AALE Workshop *Full Node, Berlin July 23, 2019 18h CEST (Berlin) 12h EST (New York)* • Youtube Live Broadcast link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WhLz2AqmxY • HackMD link for active note-taking: https://hackmd.io/AVy2rUZeRWKf285W61aftw?view • Google Hangouts ## Workflow 1) Walk through Publishing DAO Workflow Diagram, highlighting a) roles, b) functions, and c) automated processes with vignettes 2) Introduction to Agency Tranaction Table as a way to chart the outcomes 3) Introduction of Agency Outcomes Map * `if business type is A, if roles are configured X, the function involved is Y, then outcome is Z` 4) Using Chris's matrix as a guide for Agency Outcomes Map ------------------------------------------------- ## Publishing DAO Workflow ![](https://i.imgur.com/MwB8hCU.png) #### Background (Hypothetical Fact Pattern Narrative) Aspiring "poet of the revolution" Bob seeks to print a limited-edition collection of his original poems for donors to the Poetry as Resistance festival. Bob requests that DAOlice, the Publishing DAO, produce 25 physical copies of the book to distribute before the festival begins on August 31. His proposal is accompanied by a deposit, a standard precaution for DAOlice to avoid spam attacks. In June, DAOlice received Bob's proposal to publish the book. Reception of the request starts DAOlice's procedure for book publication, during which: I.) a panel of "DAO Curators" (voting-eligible members) review Bob's proposal and vote via the DAO's [Voting App](https://hack.aragon.org/docs/acl-intro.html/)) on whether to approve the proposal ( e.g. produce the book for Bob on his behalf using the [Espresso Book Machine](https://www.ondemandbooks.com/)); II.) the book is either approved or rejected by the Curators of the DAO. If the book is approved, move to the next step; if the book is rejected, the deposits are claimed by the DAO and Bob doesn't recoup any of it. III.) the Espresso Book Machine prints the copies of the book; IV.) Logistics partner Charlie Corp. is hired to ship the book and distributes the copies to the recipients ------------------------------------------------- #### Instructions Given the above, examine the following fact patterns using the Agency Transaction Table to determine i) identify what section of the Publishing DAO diagram corresponds to which transaction in column 1 of **Agency Transaction Table**; ii) determine what, if any, agency relationships exist in columns 2-4; iii) determine the rights and duties of each party based on the agency relationship in the transaction ---------------------------------------------- ## Agency Transaction Table |Permutation | Transaction | Principal | Agent |Third Party| Description | | -------- | -------- | -------- | --------|-------- |------| | Permutation A | Member of the public funds DAO to have Third Party produce book | Member of the Public | DAO| Publishing House| **Permutation A** [Functions involved: 1 - Funds are deposited]Nothing goes wrong: Bob submits a manuscript of entirely original work devoid of illegal content. Transaction executes as expected (EBM prints complete versions of Bob's book in the requested amount, without IP violations). The Logistics Partners deliver the book on time.| | Permutation B| Book is legal | Principal | Agent |Third Party| **Permutation B** [Functions involved: 2 - Curators review content and pass Vote/ approve Proposal] Bob includes a poem that, when read backwards, containing classified information about a new spying program protected against disclosure by national security regulations. None of the Curators realize that secret information is included. | | Permutation C| Book is illegal (content) | Principal | Agent |Third Party|**Permutation C** [Functions involved: 2 - Curators review content and Vote is passed/Proposal approved] As it turns out, several of the poems in the book are verbatim copies of poems by Allen Ginsberg . The poems are part of the Ginsberg estate and unavailable through the public domain (i.e. the poems are pirated).None of the Curators who voted to approve* the proposal realized that the poems weren't all original – in fact most of them didn't review the content of the book at all. One of the "No" votes did come from a Curator who noticed that the poems were very similar to Ginsberg's and looked up the original poem to confirm it, but didn't share that information with other voters. | | Permutation D | Charlie Corp. fails to deliver| Principal| Agent | Third Party| **Permutation D** [Functions involved: 4 - Logistics company ships] Publication is initiated (Curators have voted to approve the Proposal) and order sent to Logistics Partner, Charlie Corp., to ship by August 31.A Charlie Corp. intern accidentally selects a shipping date at the end of September instead of August, delaying shipment long past the date Bob was promised.| | Permutation E| Is an Agency Relationship formed?| Principal| Agent | Third Party|**Permutation E** [Functions involved: 2, 3, 4,] DAO curators take too long in reviewing the book for it to be printed in time for delivery by the time of Poetry as Resistance Festival.| |Permutation F| Book is legal, but delivery failure (by Bob's delay) | Principal | Agent | Third Party| **Permutation F** [Functions involved: 6 - Onboarding New Participants] When Bob submitted his Proposal and deposit, DAOlice's Onboarding Manager informed him that he would have to pay the full amount before printing and shipping could start - information also clearly stated in his signed Proposal contract. Although Bob understood this stipulation when signing, he was waiting on more donors to come through before paying the full amount. Mid-August, Bob accepts that no more funding will come and he'll have to choose between canceling the order and losing his deposit, or eating the cost himself. He decides to move forward with printing but waited so long there's no way the book will be done by August 31.In an attempt to get DAOlice to cover the cost of a rush order, Bob insists that he wasn't adequately instructed during Onboarding so didn't know that shipping couldn't start without full payment.| --------------------------------------------- ### Permutations **Permutation A** [Functions involved: 1 - Funds are deposited] Nothing goes wrong: Bob submits a manuscript of entirely original work devoid of illegal content. Attached is a .PDF copy of the XMind diagram to help demonstrate the way the process will flow. ![](https://i.imgur.com/ky6LoP2.png)
