# Governor Wakayama asks current Congress to approve IR plan

Yoshinobu Nishaka (pictured), governor of Japan's Wakayama Prefecture, urged the prefectural council to follow the lead of the city council and vote in favor of the casino integrated resort (IR) regional plan so that it can be submitted to the government by April 28.


The governor made the appeal at a press briefing on Wednesday. "It will be a big problem if Congress does not vote in favor of submitting the IR plan to the central government," he told reporters

He added: "I am confident that if the prefecture sends it, it will be approved by the central government."

Local elected representatives have expressed concern that a private consortium led by Clarevest Nim Ventures KK has yet to clarify details regarding the 470 billion yen ($3.8 billion) funding.

Wakayama's other provincial elected body, the City Council, voted late last month in favor of the so-called IR district development plan, which was finalized some time ago.

If the Wakayama prefectural council "refuses to transmit" regional IR proposals to central authorities, the council is "responsible for ruining the IR plan," the governor added in comments on Wednesday.

But if the current Congress agrees to send a regional IR proposal to the central authorities, it will be someone "responsible" for a plan that is "rejected by the central government," the governor said.

Under the existing liberalization program, up to three casino resorts will be allowed nationwide. Currently, Nagasaki and Osaka are also expected to submit applications.
