# Cooking Rework, Draft 2 ### Part 1: Trimming the Fat This category consists of base QoL improvements that won't radically change the cooking experience, but will improve the code infrastructure behind cooking. * Streamline and refine food quality code. #### An Aside on Food Quality Code Food quality code is ass right now to the point where it makes it a headache to understand how the oven actually works. A simple, streamlined rewrite might just make more sense than trying to revise it. * Remove cook time variable from oven, preserve High and Low settings. This makes recipes much easier to memorize. * Add the ability for recipes to produce more than one of its product. * Add the baking sheet, which allows certain types of dough-based foods to be made in bulk. * Add the ability for recipes to accept categories of ingredients - meat, vegetables, fruit, et cetera - in place of one specific ingredient. *Ex: ratatouille needing 3 different vegetables of any kind + garlic, rather than tomato, eggplant, and cucumber specifically.* * Change stomachs to have a limit. This physically prevents a single staffie from gobbling up an entire spread. This limit can probably be altered by a couple traits or Genetics or things like that. * Context icons for ingredients like flour and dough for anyone with culinary training. These are like the deconstruction tool's context icons, in that they show people what to do it but don't do it for them. * Allow people using cookbooks to select or highlight specific recipes to quickly reference while cooking. Possible implementation includes leaving the cookbook open to a specific page, which can then be checked at a glance by examining it. ### Part 2: Moving Away from Ovencentrism These are additions of new cooking methods to the kitchen. They will move some recipes out of the oven's list of recipes and into their own. While this may initially be confusing if you're already used to making everything in the oven, it's more intuitive and allows chef to be a more newcomer-friendly role. * Add a cutting board that allows for the assembly of sandwiches (including custom sandwiches) and other dishes that rationally shouldn't require heating, like salads. * Add a cooking pot for the stove. It takes a while to cook things (about a minute) but it's a lot more lenient in regards to overcooking, so you can multitask. Transfer fitting recipes from oven list to cooking pot list. * Add a frying pan for the stove. It makes a funny sound when you hit people with it. May require the pan to be primed with oil or butter or another lipid first. The most involved form of cooking, requiring active attention to not fuck its dishes up, but for better buffs if you can master it. * Other potential cooking methods include a wok for many East Asian recipes (and popcorn :yum:) and a griddle for more breakfasty foods. Potentially can be integrated as cargo-purchaseable items. ### Part 3: Shoot for the Moon, Land Among the Michelin Stars These are changes that fall somewhere in between new features and QoL for old features. Some of these could be put in Part 1. Provided that new methods of cooking get implemented, these may be easier to implement later as opposed to sooner. * Make certain dishes serve more, and give the player the ability to slop several 3ish-bite servings out from these with a serving utensil. The plating meta deepens. * Add the ability to cook simple, kinda shitty food from raw ingredients if you have a source of heat. Welding torch steaks. Plasmaflood-poached eggs. * fully modular burgers. one of these days. * Food taste related traits. Picky Eater trait that lets people eat only 5 randomly rolled foods without getting violently ill. Lactose Intolerant trait. * Add infrastructure for chefs and bartenders to make menus beyond writing a list of what they're serving on a piece of paper. Or at least give them some way to add photos of the food. ### Part 4: Visions of Sugar-Plums Dancing In My God Damn HEAD These ones are loose concepts, more than anything else. Take them with a grain of salt if you'd like, or don't if you think they sound neat. * dishwashing? * food safety?? * modular aspic system that allows you to create horrific, horrific food crimes. let antags trap a victim inside and serve them up as The Worst Food Known To Mankind * re-add the ability to give the silicons food and drink * in 2054 the mcrib will be ruled illegal across all sectors of space * allow us to put hot dogs in the nadir power substations in place of catalytic rods * new method of cooking known as the Singularity Sous Vide * add the ability to make soup in the pool. allow chefs to menacingly chop carrots and onions into the pool while the swimmers look on and laugh * orange cream cheerios
