## ❤️ Regeneron 2020 International Science and Engineering Fair
By Madeline Bauer
Each year, the American Statistical Association sponsors Special Awards in Statistics that are given to the 3 science projects that demonstrate the best use of statistics.
The objective is to increase outreach to high school students.
To identify the winning projects, we’ll need lots of statisticians to help—we expect there to be about 1400 projects submitted by high school students from over 80 countries. Judging will be held on Tuesday May 12 and Wednesday May 13. The Special Awards Ceremony is held on Thursday evening May 14, when the three southern California chapter presidents will present the ASA Special Awards in Statistics to the top three winners.
When: May 12 – 13, 2020 Location: Anaheim Convention Center

### 📖 Englihtened Democracy: The Case for the Electoral College by Tara Ross

Biography
Tara Ross is the author of The Indispensable Electoral College: How the Founders’ Plan Saves Our Country from Mob Rule (2017), We Elect A President: The Story of Our Electoral College (2016), and Enlightened Democracy: The Case for the Electoral College (2d ed. 2012). She is also a co-author of Under God: George Washington and the Question of Church and State (2008) (with Joseph C. Smith, Jr.).
Reviews:
"Journalistic garbage trying to justify the results of the Bush elections with the 2nd edition updated with the Trump travesty"
This is a horrible piece of yellow journalism, incorporating all sots of vacuous, inappropriate arguments why the Electoral College is the best and safest way to elect a President. It ignores the fact that Hamilton soon realized the error of this approach and tried to change it, without success. The framers were obviously confused as to its practicality, but went along with it nonetheless. Hamilton wanted a king, not a president, and was against the masses (mob) electing a President. So he managed to interject a method supposedly allowing land owning gentry being entrusted with the task, except that they almost never vote their conscience but just mimic the will of their particular state, thus making a vote in North Dakota worth many times that of someone in New York. So now every office in the land is rewarded to the winner of the one person one vote approach, where everyone's vote counts equally, whether they live in the heart of a city or on a farm, except for the highest office.
This book is published by the company that produces all of the radical right wingnut publications that would never get in print any other way. The author is a shill of the worst elements of the Republican party, and the book is endorsed by the dregs of the party, Ken Starr, Ed Meese,Judith Best, Robert Hardaway, with the Foreward by none other than George Will. But it isn't a complete loss. I plan on recycling it.

 "A Thorough Debate"
Once again, many people in America are calling for the abolition of the Electoral College. This book not only explains why that would be harmful to the federalism of our nation but also goes into detail about the mindset of the Founders when they came up with this plan. As an added bonus to those who would like to bolster their understanding of the debates about Federalism vs. Anit-Federalism, this book addresses some of those issues. Anyone wanting to have a thorough understand of the pros and cons of the Electoral College should enjoy reading The Enlightened Democracy.
