# Research Questions Draft (OSMF LCCWG Moderation Subcommittee)

Interview duration: 30-45min

### 1) Describe your first online interaction with the OpenStreetMap community

Icebreaker question, get participants out of “spokesperson mode” and talking about their direct personal experiences. Don’t limit it answers to mailing lists yet, but do limit them to online interactions instead of in-person conference ones.

Clarifications:

- How did you learn about the channel you chose?
- What did you hope for when you got involved?
- How did your interaction meet your expectations?

### 2) Tell us about your best interaction with the OSM community in an online channel

Set a positive tone early in the interview, again keeping interview focused about direct experiences. Ideally this experience concerns the talk@ list directly, but it’s likely that positive interactions are happening in Telegram, Slack, or other channels. Keep channel choice open.

Clarifications:

- What did you learn from your positive experience?
- How does it compare to typical OSM online interactions?
- How does it compare to positive experieces in non-OSM channels?

### 3) Tell us about a time when something stopped you from participating in OSM’s community mailing lists

Switch gears to likely negative experiences. Narrow focus to mailing lists as the subject of the moderation subcommittee. Set the stage for next question about change that might be introduced to the mailing lists.

Clarifications:

- Had you participated before this point?
- What happened leading up to your decision to stop?
- How did you decide to stop participating?
- How long did you stay away, and how did you decide to return? (if applicable)

### 4) What change would you make to OSM’s mailing list to improve them?

Start talking about proposals and ideas for the future here. Ideally the proposed change reflects the moderation focus of this research, lead there if not. Leave 15-20min for this part.

Clarifications:

- How would this change encourage you to participate in the mailing lists?
- How are OSM’s email lists like or unlike other community channels?
- Describe good examples of channel moderation you’ve seen elsewhere
