The 2022/23 Champions League makes its long-awaited return this week with four Round of 16 first-leg
matches, including Chelsea’s eye-catching trip to Borussia Dortmund.
Antonio Conte returns to San Siro for the first time since winning the Serie A title with Inter Milan in
2021, as he aims to plot a path into the quarterfinals for Spurs.
Neither side has enjoyed a strong start to 2023, with Spurs’ 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester City
followed up by a heavy defeat at Leicester City last weekend, with Milan winning just once at home in
2023.

Antonio Conte will be without Rodrigo Bentancur for Tuesday night’s match, who has been ruled out for
up to six months with an ACL injury, as well as Yves Bissouma, Hugo Lloris, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
(suspended).
Christian Romero will return following a suspension and will likely replace Japhet Tanganga in a back
three, joining Eric Dier and Ben Davies.
The first leg will come too soon for first-choice Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, with the club hoping he
will be fit for the second leg following a lengthy calf injury.
Ismael Bennacer and Fikayo Tomori could both recover in time to feature on the starting line-up after
injury problems of their own.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned to the Milan bench on Friday for the first time since May 2022, but was an
unused substitute.
Chelsea finished top of Group D ahead of second place Eintracht Frankfurt, while Milan were edged
out of Group E’s top spot by Chelsea.
The return leg will take place at the Chelsea Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday 8 March.
“We believe we’re equal to Chelsea,” Milan boss Stefano Pioli said in. Winning the Champions League
is a dream but it’s useless to think about it now. A week ago, they beat Manchester City, but we don’t
come in better or worse than them. It will be a big game that we will have to play well."
These two teams have met at this stage of the Champions League once before. On that occasion, Peter
Crouch scored Spurs’ winner at the San Siro before a goalless draw in London sent the Premier League
side through.
