Program Description

[Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI)](https://investinopen.org/) is seeking an Administrative Assistant to join a growing team working to increase adoption, investment in, and the sustainability of open infrastructure in research and scholarship. 

The Administrative Assistant position is key to helping IOI build organizational capacity and effectiveness to deliver on its mission. This role will support IOI's Executive Director and Steering Committee by providing operational and logistics support.

This position will work closely with the Executive Director, the Chair, and Vice Chair of the Steering Committee. As a distributed team, we heavily rely on process and communication, which we’ve outlined in the guides below. Candidates should be fluent in Google products such as Drive, Docs, Spreadsheets, Slides, calendar, email, as well as familiar with Trello for task management, Slack for team communication, and Expensify for expense management.

Roles and Responsibilities

- Draft, review and send communications on behalf of IOI’s Executive Director (and potentially Leadership team, as needed)
- Support the ED to help organize and prepare for meetings, including gathering documents and attending to logistics of meetings (e.g. monthly steering committee meetings, governance calls, etc)
- Triage, review and action admin@ and contact@ emails, communicate messages and information to the ED
- Prioritize emails for the ED and action via Trello to ensure tasks and working time are delegated
- Support the ED and leadership in researching and booking travel arrangements for the ED and for group travel as needed (e.g. Steering meetings, team retreats, targeted in-person events)
- Maintain various records and documents for company executive(s)
- Oversee invoicing and filing of receipts, including tracking and monitoring standing bills for the organization (e.g. tech services like AWS, HackMD, etc), supporting the ED in filing and approving expenses via Expensify. Help with systematizing tech invoices (for expenses as well as tracking ongoing costs / flagging when there’s a spike)
- Provide scheduling support for Steering Committee Chair, Vice Chair, and for Committees
- Support ED and leadership re: scheduling needs, driving the ED’s calendar
- Note-taking for Steering and Committee meetings, support in preparing summaries of key decisions, meeting minutes, follow up.

### Engagement Coordinator, Infrastructure

Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) is seeking a Engagement Coordinator, Infrastructure to join a growing team working to increase adoption, investment in, and the sustainability of open infrastructure in research and scholarship.

The Engagement Coordinator, Infrastructure is instrumental to the next phase of growth and development for the Catalog of Open Infrastructure Services (COIs), as we seek to develop COIs from an initial prototype to an integrated service that is representative of the open infrastructure landscape, provides actionable information that informs funders and institutions on where to direct resources, and is valued as a robust, reliable, and dynamic offering.

This includes building and leading the execution of user and community engagement strategies and processes that would help improve the usability and functionality of COIs both for data providers and decision makers (e.g. funders, institutional budget holders) and increase adoption. This position will serve as the external face of COIs, presenting COIs at external events, surfacing community needs and feedback to inform COI’s development and growth. The community manager will also be tasked with crafting thoughtful metrics and mechanisms to measure progress, and play a critical role in documentation, event, and communication assets creation.

This position will work closely with the Research and Product Leads. This is a full-time, remote position, reporting to the Engagement Lead.

Key tasks for this role include
* Develop and maintain relationships with infrastructure service providers and vendors, to understand their needs and challenges, and ensure that these are taken into account in the development of COIs and other IOI products and strategies.
* Build and manage a communications plan and content strategy to drive data submission and adoption of COIs, and keep infrastructure service providers informed about IOI activities, events, and opportunities, and to raise awareness for open infrastructure.
* Foster a supportive and collaborative environment for infrastructure service providers to be involved in COI’s development and IOI’s work, by creating spaces for interaction and communication, facilitating introductions and connections, and promoting best practices and knowledge sharing.
* Build and maintain COIs documentation that meet the needs of data providers, users, and other key stakeholders, in partnership with the Research Coordinator.

In addition, as a member of the Engagement Team, work with other team members in:
* Communication campaign planning and execution: writing communication plans and developing tailored messages to engage our key stakeholders in support of our objectives.
* Meeting and event coordination: manage communication and logistics for IOI’s events, including supporting events’ technical set-up, maintaining RSVPs, and ensuring information flow between invitees, participants, partners and staff.

Program Description

Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) is seeking an Engagement Lead to join a growing team working to increase adoption, investment in, and the sustainability of open infrastructure in research and scholarship.

The Engagement Lead position is key to ensuring our work is responsive to, and reflective of, the needs of the communities we serve: researchers, scholars, budget holders/funders, and the open infrastructure community. This role will drive IOI’s participation and engagement strategies to advance IOI’s mission.

This includes tailoring messaging and development focused events to drive action among stakeholder groups, project managing community engagement work, and designing and managing the various points of participation in IOI’s work. This position will serve as a main liaison to IOI’s Community Councils and represent IOI at external events, surfacing community needs, trends, and feedback to inform IOI’s work and strategic priorities. The Engagement Lead will also be tasked with crafting thoughtful metrics and mechanisms to measure progress, and play a key role in program asset creation including blog posts, outreach, web content, and webinars/community calls.

This position will work closely with the Director of Research and Strategy and the Executive Director to design strategy for tailored events to further IOI’s mission and operationalize IOI’s research. This is a full-time, remote position, reporting to the Executive Director.

Your Relevant Skills & Career Goals

Call for Applicants

Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) is a coalition of organizations working to organize and deliver funding for open scholarly infrastructure at scale from the most obvious beneficiaries: the global institutions and agencies that form the bulk of academic support and funding today. This role will be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day activities of IOI, working with the Steering Committee to define and execute a plan to unlock substantial and durable funding for open scholarly infrastructure. This involves managing the program work, staff, and fundraising as needed for programmatic activities, developing and engaging with the IOI Steering Committee and the partner organizations.

We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit to work with the IOI Steering Committee to develop and launch new initiatives aimed at expanding support for open scholarly infrastructure. This role will engage in everything from strategic planning and communications, cross-org collaboration, day-to-day tasks, hiring processes, fundraising, and overall program design and management.

This role is responsible for managing the IOI project, a fiscally sponsored project of Code for Science & Society (CS&S). The role reports to the IOI Advisory Committee, part of the larger IOI Steering Committee.

Core Responsibilities
- Develop the vision for and scope of IOI in partnership with the IOI Steering Committee
- Arrange and oversee deliverables, time-tables, and budget allocation for program activities

Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) is seeking a Product Lead to join a growing team working to increase adoption, investment in, and the sustainability of open infrastructure in research and scholarship by leading our effort to develop our Catalog of Open Infrastructure Services (COIs) from a prototype into a full-featured application and supporting the delivery of other targeted research products to our key stakeholders.

You will be responsible for managing the technical aspects of the COIs application development as well as other similar digital products we may develop in the future to support our grant-funded work. You will help hire and manage contract technical staff, including designers, developers, data engineers, and UX researchers. You will enable the work of others through effective coordination, delegation, and task management towards building a quality product that fulfills our vision of an application that increases information sharing, improves discovery, and delivers value for users seeking to support open infrastructure services.

You should have experience directing a technical team through the steps in the software development life cycle towards a finished web-based application in fulfillment of documented technical requirements. You should also have familiarity with the key technical areas you will be managing (web development frameworks, visual design principles, database systems, and user research techniques). You should be familiar with open-source tools and technologies, particularly the technologies we’ve used in the prototype application (PostgreSQL, Django/Python, D3.js, and Ubuntu). Ideally, you will have experience or at least a keen interest in the process of scientific research and scholarly communication, particularly research using open tools and technologies.

You will report to the Executive Director and sit alongside the Engagement, Business Development & Partnerships, and Research Leads as part of the Leadership team. Despite being a distributed team, we expect you to be highly collaborative and a valuable participant in our weekly team meetings, providing updates and offering input to the full range of IOI’s work.

Key responsibilities
* Guide a multi-functional team of contract professionals to develop the Catalog of Open Infrastructure Services web-based application from a prototype to a full-featured application
* Manage product roadmaps, collaborate cross-functional business development and technical teams, and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) was launched to create a strategic, global body dedicated to furthering a network of open, interoperable community-led and -supported infrastructure to advance scholarship, research, and education. We work in concert with institutional funders, decision makers, and philanthropic funders to better understand the decision points, funding and governance models available, and costs associated with maintaining, sustaining, and scaling open infrastructure projects.

We are seeking a Research Data Analyst with a background in either nonprofit management and analysis, or the scientific, scholarly, and information management spaces to join our growing team and help us build a stronger, vibrant, and more resilient infrastructure supporting scientific and scholarly research. The Research Data Analyst will be essential to our mission of providing more and better investment by doing important research into governance, management, operations, financing, and community engagement efforts of the organisations providing critical services to scientists, scholars, academics, librarians, educators, and students.

Reporting to the Research Lead, the Research Data Analyst will also be expected to help scope, provide input, review, and, if necessary, directly manage the research work of our partner researchers and other IOI staff members. As a highly collaborative and iterative organisation, the Research Data Analyst will be expected to engage in all aspects of IOI’s research agenda and strategic planning as someone with both a professional and personal interest in the values and mission IOI is working to promote.

This is a full-time role with benefits, designed to build on IOI’s existing research and expand the depth and breadth of our work providing in-depth analysis for institutional decision makers, infrastructure providers, and funders on the hidden costs of open infrastructure for research and scholarship.

Responsibilities include
* Conducting quantitative and qualitative research into the governance, operations, financing, and community engagement practices of infrastructure providers with the intention of providing relevant, reliable, practical, and meaningful guidance to build robust open services able to become the default in scientific discovery, scholarly research, and information management.

* Experience analysing quantitative data to identify trends, patterns, and other insights particularly financial data from nonprofit organisations to assess financial health using evidence-based, research-supported metrics.

For those with a background in research, scholarly communication, and information management, you should be able to demonstrate:
* Familiarity with key topics and current research in the open science movement, including, but not limited to, open access, open data, open-source software, open peer review, open publishing, and community-led governance, including key terms, concepts, frameworks, and case studies current in the space.
* Experience with the various phases of the research lifecycle and the tools utilised in each phase to accomplish key research and scholarly tasks.

This includes scaling the [Catalog of Open Infrastructure Services (COIs)](https://investinopen.org/catalog/) as a resource for funders, decision makers, and infrastructures; working with existing infrastructure providers [to apply our existing research](https://2i2c.org/blog/2022/czi-global-communities-proposal/) to their growth and development; and mapping out research needs to underpin funding decisions (including for [IOI's 2024 Collective Fund](https://investinopen.org/blog/ioi-launches-fund-to-deepen-investment-in-open-infrastructure/)). This role will also involve piloting and testing IOI's core offerings to stakeholders, exploring earned revenue streams to diversify IOI's support, while working with the team to make research outputs as openly available and accessible as possible.

This position will play a central role in operationalizing IOI's core aim to provide funding recommendations and investment guidance for research infrastructure.

This is a management position, overseeing the research function at IOI, and managing a small team of Research Data Analysts, Research Project Manager, and a team of short-term Research Affiliates.

This is a full-time, remote position, reporting to the Executive Director.

Research responsibilities

- Work with the IOI Executive Director and key stakeholder groups to scope, operationalize, and iterate on IOI's core research product offerings to increase investment in open infrastructure;
- Manage and support the development of IOI's team of Research Data Analysts and contractors;
- Articulate a coherent vision for IOI's applied research efforts that supports clear alignment across a diverse portfolio of projects and clients;
- Maintain links and collaborate where possible with other external data collection, evaluation, and systems change efforts;
- Successfully design and lead the execution of quantitative and qualitative research, alongside and in support of the core team;
- Support and train staff and community partners that are unfamiliar with research design and evaluation to collect, manage and analyze data;
- Keep current regarding funding requirements for data collection and reporting and put into place local methods to ensure reliable, accurate compliance which reflects service activities.

Strategic responsibilities

- Serve as part of the organization's leadership team and contribute to the development and execution of strategic decisions and offerings;
- Own and manage IOI's research workflows, ensuring that research outputs are strategically aligned, accessible, and actionable;
- Develop, implement and monitor an evaluation plan addressing strategic and program evaluation questions, data collection methods, analysis, and reporting;
- Prioritize inbound requests for research support and analysis;
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, other members of IOI staff, and external collaborators to determine resources available, resources needed, and evaluation outcome goals for projects and programs.

Necessary skills and experience

- Bachelor's or Master's degree or equivalent experience in designing, executing, and reporting findings of complex research projects;
- Experience with data-intensive research and analysis, both quantitative and qualitative;
- Knowledge and experience of community-based and participatory research methods to inform program development and design of product offerings;
- Knowledge and experience of program evaluation principles, theories, concepts, and practices;
- Ability to analyze information, summarize findings, and present them in ways easily understandable to decision-makers;
- Program or organizational-level leadership, with a thoughtful approach to staff management in remote settings.

- This is a grant-funded position.
- CS&S is the fiscal sponsor and organizational home of IOI. CS&S offers employee benefits through TriNet for US-based employees, including health insurance and retirement.
- International applicants will be considered for a contract position.
- Candidates should already be able to work legally where they are based, we can not offer visa support for this position at this time.
- IOI is a fully remote organization, with project leadership based in US Eastern Standard time. Candidates should be available 3+ hours / day with project leadership.
