Meeting Notes, Mar 26, 2022

  • roys

    • it is a very good tool for academics/researchers, yes
    • References are cool (core feature?)
    • LaTeX looks cool, but obvs. hard to understand
    • Crucial is: interoperability (he uses Zettlr+Obsidian)
    • end-to-end writing pipeline
    • improvable: spell checking and grammar (double spaces, etc.)
    • can we please have hierarchical tags since tags is a non markdown standard already. This would be so useful for PKM/KM in general.
    • Image Not Showing Possible Reasons
      • The image file may be corrupted
      • The server hosting the image is unavailable
      • The image path is incorrect
      • The image format is not supported

there is revealjs support to export to slides already.
    • using zettlr to reduce redundancy e.g. same markdown files to export to notes, slides and papers.
  • hiperterminal (the guy from Bogota)

    • centralize writing in Zettlr (blogposts, journal articles, books, basically everything in one place)
    • Many people in his lab are now using TiddlyWiki instead of Zettlr (more wiki-like/ZKN stuff and using transclusion)
    • But TiddlyWiki is compatible to Zettlr
    • Use-case digital preservation (i.e. no migration)
    • learning from workflow of other people.
    • Here my workflow
  • kyaso:

    • not an academic, currently in industry
    • using it as PKM; uses the linking stuff
    • also tried Obsidian, but the main selling point was Open Source
  • cobblepot:

    • Doesn’t use Zettlr as a main tool, he’s using some Open Source mind mapping tool as well as Roam and Obsidian
    • He’s mainly using Zettlr as a Pandoc GUI (lol)
    • ‘50,000 feet bird’s eye view on software’
    • There are some unmet needs for academics: for him personally, what is lacking is a one-shot integration of writing small atomic notes as well as long-form writing
    • Zettlr is not able to handle too long documents, as well as managing outlining (i.e. put notes together and so on)
    • Also: Multi-window!!
    • roys_note: rolling text at different levels e.g. using a shortcut to roll h2 etc
  • Piankhy:

    • Is an archaeologist
    • Also multiple windows
    • A cool feature would be to have footnotes next to the text instead of having them either at the bottom of the document or in tooltips → roys chimes in (as a tab next to references tab)
    • Uses Zettlr for long form writing
    • Previously he literally had a Zettelkasten :D
    • Came from Word, then moved directly to LaTeX
    • Scrivener also has a few features that would suit Zettlr well
    • Doesn’t use Zettelkasten methodology
  • Frank Carver:

    • Usability issues. Some logic to the flow of work in Zettlr
    • Have used Tiddlywiki but ran into issues with browser permissions
    • roys_note: Template for new notes???
    • Telemetry??? to help make these decisions
    • Modes of working
    • recipes
  • Hendrik:

    • If people can provide some feedback on how their workflow looks like in detail. e.g. what does their prefered
    • Prefers to not include telemetry to make it fully clear that zettlr values your privacy and having these meetings is the main way to get users feedback. roys_note: and obviously there is discord server.
    • Suggested proceedure:
      • announce to people on discord to write about people workflow (10-12)
      • see the common elements of those workflows and use as what would've been telemetry
      • Frank chimes in about writing about specific recipes of parts of the workflow where you are more confident. 1-2 paragraphs
      • Analyse it in 2-3 weeks
