## In scope

- Provide an history of usage of FDTs in communication protocols, and a survey of the existing FDTs and tools
- Study the social and cultural barriers to the adoption of FDTs in the IETF, to inform guidance on both the development and suitability of different FDTs, and on the use of FDTs in the IETF
- Bridge the gap between the significant academic work in FDTs and the practical use in the IETF
- Identify areas of work in the IETF that would benefit most from the use of the FDTs, and work with those groups to increase their use of FDTs
- Study the technical barriers to the adoption of FDTs, identifying the necessary or desirable tooling integrations, and where necessary, developing and prototyping tooling

## Out of scope

- Attempting to define a single description technique that is design for all use cases: must explicitly acknowledge that different techniques are necessary.
