    # The Turing Way Book Dash - TTW/Scriberia Scriberia illustrators have experience illustrating technical concepts simply and hence they will understand data science concepts (but keep it simple). Please use this Zenodo link to browse all the previous TTW/Scriberia illustrations to avoid recreating what already exist: https://zenodo.org/record/3332807. This is also where the new set of illustrations will be uploaded. Here are a few tips for you to plan to work with illustrator: - Keep your idea simple: less complex processes and components make illustrations easy to understand without much text (hence they are reusable by others, transferable in different projects beyond TTW book and can work for any language) - Capture the key message: Thesse illustrations go along with the chapter you are writing, or a talk you will give — so think about key message that you want to convey - Explore some ideas in advance with your team members: This helps when speaking with the illustrator as you will be able to provide specific idea, example, metaphor or analogy. Note that this may evolve to something new/better while talking/working with the illustrator (they ask clarifying questions and discuss if something is not clear). - When the final illustration is produced: We should have the first version of all images by the end of the day in the UK. I will share a link to a shared drive which you can use to check all illustrations. If illustration you contributed to has some error, please raise them with me as soon as possible. We can request to correct those errors in the next days. - Adding Alt Text to each of the illustrations produced: to make the illustrations accessible for all, the working group should produce a small piece of text to describe the image. (Alt Text - alternative text - is read aloud by screen readers used by visually impaired users): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B4mm-7ELWZCkHqE2rfeML1z803TNSnjLReMTlvyEltQ/edit#gid=0 ## November 2023 ### Green Data Centres (E&S Collaborators Group) - Renewable energy sources (wind farm, solar panels) - Energy efficiency (imagery usually associated with housing) - Natural environment in connection with digital world - Data centres - imagery usually centres around lots and lots and lots of servers - Anne F ideas: - [name=Anne]: I would represent data as the ground and the more green data you have the more sustainable and green is the life/city above. But I am not sure it is easy to represent! - [name=Alejandro]: however FAIR data can be represented too in somehow as green data? - [name=Anne]: So data would not be represented as "digits" but with metadata and an easy way to access (like a direct line between data and the rest of the world) so that the data stored is useful and reused (recycled) - Seedlings? - Grass background? - Most images in internet have a data centre with grass floor - Location-aware? - Climate/Weather - Proximity to energy power plants - Land prices - [Types?](https://www.adlittle.com/en/insights/viewpoints/green-data-centers-opportunities-decarbonization) - Single green data center. This approach involves a single campus with a data center, a solar field or wind farm (or both), a way to integrate the renewable power with the electrical grid, and a way to store excess power from renewables (to help lower peak-period costs). Renewable energy helps the data center lower the cost of peak-period energy while generating an energy surplus during off hours that can be channeled back to the grid. - Twin green data centers. Twin data centers have complementary energy-sourcing profiles, letting them balance each other’s needs through demand management. The centers are located in different areas and powered by renewable sources with different peak profiles (e.g., solar energy and wind power), so they can be integrated to flatten their power curves. For example, a data center in Spain’s southern region contributes solar power while a center in the northeast contributes wind power. ![image](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/ByHVbD7Na.png) #### Related images in TTW/Scriberia Zenodo: ![environmental-impact](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/HkE8EvXET.jpg) ### Scalable Big Data Analysis (Pangeo) - [Zettabytes chart](https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-21st-century-data-center-an-overview/) ![image](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/S1h8GDm4T.png) - [Pangeo-ML](https://discourse.pangeo.io/t/pangeo-machine-learning-ecosystem-2023-diagram/3742): ![77d3640e97dbf361af5059cebe729be41d8131d2](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/H1B_eFQV6.jpg) - [Pangeo-Infra]: ![Pangeo-BiDS-Presentation](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/rJ_ceYQET.png) #### Related images in TTW/Scriberia Zenodo: ![astropy-ecosystem](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/B1tXIvmEp.jpg) ![data-safe-haven](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/ry0jUvQE6.jpg) ![1728_TURI_Book sprint_18 reusable pipeline_040619](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/ByvCUwXVa.jpg) ### h3 Building ![image](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/H1Vq56Q46.png) Resource Management: Tetris Data Model: xarray User interface: Interactive screen Storage system: Disk/Bucket Scalable Compute: Divide/Chunking Structure:
