# How To Work for a DAO This document covers how to transition to and work for a DAO as well as how to spin up and operate a workstream or subdao within a DAO. **Decentralizing Gitcoin Grants (ScopeLift)**

This post is a kickoff to the process of creating a decentralized version of the Gitcoin Grants system. In it, we’ll summarize the goals and ethos of the project, as well as the high level architecture and foreseen challenges. We invite feedback on any and all portions of this document. Community involvement in this process is imperative to its success. Unpacking “Decentralized” The word “decentralized” is overloaded in the crypto world. A useful starting point is to unpack this term into more precise ones, and to specify which form(s) of decentralization the Gitcoin Grants project will aim for. Rigid Decentralization In its strongest form, decentralization can be interpreted to mean automatic, immutable, and maximally censorship resistant. In the abstract, these are worthy properties to pursue. However, there are some contexts where they are not yet attainable, for at least one of two reasons:

Gitcoin Decentralized Grants (Chainsafe)

Design Specification 1. Overview This document details an alternative design for Gitcoin Grants with a focus on openness and non-intervention by the Gitcoin team. Prior to moving to a distributed model for grants, Gitcoin plans to launch a DAO and governance token. These will also form part of the design. 2. Objectives The design of a decentralized grant system should have the following properties: Permissionless - Anybody can participate by creating a grant or funding an existing grant. This may require meeting some identity requirements but any valid human on earth should be able to participate without obstruction. Furthermore anybody should be able to start and run their own matching rounds.
