    # Team ARLANDAR: DP1 Needfinding ## Table of contents - [Experience](#Experience) - [Target Users](#Target-Users) - [Observation and Interviews](#Observation-and-Interviews) - [A. Extreme User](#A.-Extreme-User) - [B. Travelers](#B.-Travelers) - [C. Footballer](#C.-Footballer) - [D. Street Artist](#D.-Street-Artist) - [Needs](#Needs) - [Insights](#Insights) - [Studio Reflection](#Studio-Reflection) - [Summary](#Summary) - [Addressing](#Addressing) ## Experience We are redesigning the process of promoting events to folks ### Target Users Anyone who want to ~~create and~~ promote their events to a public ## Observation and Interviews ### A. Extreme User The user has been interviewed by _Nurlykhan Kopenov_ #### Description of the user There were three extreme users, who were adults and teens. We call them extreme users because they have never organized activities and events. #### Interview method - Through google form - Zoom meeting #### General Questions As these users are extreme, we asked them why they haven't organized events before. And then, we were interested in whether they would invite strangers for their events and motivations for inviting strangers if they will organize it. And what kind of events would they organize. #### Interview results - One out of three users doubted inviting strangers because of safety factors and preferred inviting only her friends. - Other two users were absolutely fine inviting strangers for their events such as concert and debate or movie night, and their motivations for inviting was mainly meeting new people(socializing) - All of the users said that they are bad at organizing events, and it would be disappointing when they organize but nobody comes to their events. ![](https://i.imgur.com/vVwgCTk.png =300x300) *Figure 1. The visual representation of user who have never organized an event, and just sitting alone with his/her phone* ### B. Travelers The user has been interviewed by _Aidyn Aluadin_ #### Description of the user This user class includes people who love traveling, and some of them were especially interested in hiking. We were interested in finding out how this type of user gather people together to go on a collective trip and we wanted to find out whether they experience any kind of problems in doing so. #### Interview method - Google form - Messenger apps #### Interview results - Most of the users shared that it was easy to collect people - Active hikers reported that they could easily find or join a company in the traveling place - Other respondents reported that they just invited their friends or acquaintances - Some of them were hesitant on organizing and going on a trip with people whom they don't know - Some wrote that there is a need for an icebreaker which is extra effort - Few of them were worried about the "compatibility" of guests - They were afraid that guests may fail to get along with each other ![](https://i.imgur.com/U81PSKe.jpg =330x300) *Figure 2: Hikers searching for other companions nearby* ### C. Footballer The user has been interviewed by _Mukhtar Kussaiynbekov_ #### Description of the user The user is a student of KAIST, who joined the university in the year 2016 and actively participated in sports games. In his first two years at KAIST, he just participated in football games whenever people invited, but in his junior year, he started to organize games and gather students to have a sufficient number of players. #### Interview method - Zoom meeting #### Interview Results - He even did not think of inviting strangers from different communities or universities. He used to promote sport events to his compatriots only. - His main way of promotion was through messenger. Specifically, he wrote in group chats to promote his event and created a separate group chat with those who reacted to his message. - When promoting his event, he targeted people with whom he is familiar who would be interested in the event to not waste other people's times who would not be interested in the event. - He would like to invite strangers to play a game together, but he does not know how to reach a wider audience. ![Footballer](https://i.imgur.com/htd9rC9.jpg =350x250) *Figure 3: Footballer trying to gather people to have sufficient number of players* ### D. Street Artist The user has been interviewed by _Nurlykhan Kairly_ #### Description of the user The user is a street musician who plays music on the streets of Almaty(Kazakhstan). After the musician joined a music band, they organized a music concert in their hometown. The band usually invite their friends to their show and really likes when people enjoy their music. We wanted to see how the musicians invite the general audience to the concerts and figure out their issues associated with it. #### Interview method - Google form - Messenger apps #### Interview Results - He invited friends mostly through in-real-life interaction and some were invited using messenger - He doubts that strangers will come to their concert but wants to give it a try - Says it’s much easier to interact through an application than real-life - He is not good at socializing with strangers ![](https://i.imgur.com/WpZEjaX.jpg =250x250) *Figure 4: The musician who sings on the streets and organize concerts* ## Needs 1. Needs to invite *like-minded* people attracted to some **leisure activities** 1. Needs to find strangers *interested in music* to invite them to **concerts** 1. Needs to have *cheap and easy way* of **collecting general public** 1. Needs to ensure **authenticity** of participants to identify participants in case of incidents 1. Needs to know exact **number of attendees** of an event to allocate budget accordingly 1. Needs to ensure the **enjoyable environment** within a completely new set of people 1. Needs to gather public for making **some profit** 1. Needs to **overcome their shyness** to organize and invite other people to the event 1. Needs to **conveniently manage** the event creation and promotion *process* 1. Needs to get to know **nearby people** better ## Insights 1. There is no **concrete way** (method) of inviting general people for an event. Organizers had to email or direct message to advertise their events 1. Organizers' preferred **ways of communication** are *real-time talk and chatting* using SNS services 1. Organizers want to connect with people who have **similar goals** of organizing *activities, events* to collaborate to organize future events or learn from each other 1. One user's motivation for organizing an event was to **make some profit**. For instance, he would like to perform in street in front of people and earn money for his performance 1. Organizers are concerned about **safety & privacy** because strangers might have bad intentions. *Footballer* pointed out that he only invites his friends to personal affairs and strangers to random gatherings 1. There is no way **to be notified** if there were new events interested by a user 1. Event organizers seem to prefer to have **one communication channel** compared to using multiple channels to post promotional contents such that they will reach a wider audience 1. The musician had not selected the invitees through some *criteria*, but rather invited **anyone who might be interested** 1. Some event organizers fail to think from the **point of view** of the *potential participant* 1. The event promoters were concerned **where and at what time** to organize an event ## Studio Reflection ### Summary - Be specific about the target population. - Narrow down experience - Elaborate term **event** - Explain word **stranger** ### Addressing - We admit that we were too broad and decided to further narrow down the target population. We changed the target population from **any event organizer** to **artists**. - According to the needs of the target population, we changed the experience from **redesign how a user promotes an event to folks** to **redesign how an artist promotes his upcoming performance to folks**. - Taking into account the target population and experience we want to redesign, **event** would mean **upcoming performance**. - Stranger is any person outside of your known people network who might be interested in the **event** you are trying to organize
